Ford or Vauxhall - Like them both from that period. First car was looking for a Mk1 Escort but most were going for about £250 and usually sold quick. Then spotted a Viva for sale at £150. Base model so plastic floor liners instead of carpets and had been done up in two tone maroon and custard coloured household gloss hiding all the filler. But it was mine and took that car to both ends of the country in the next couple of years throwing good money after bad in the process. Finished off with hand painting it black and fitted a 7 dial dash from a magnum. Unfortunately the gearbox mounts rusted away and that was beyond my skills at the time to fix and I replaced with a Mk3 Cortina GXL which I kept for another 10 years. Would love another car like that nowadays but gone are the days you could pick them up for a couple of hundred quid. Avenger was the other car from back then I would have gone for too - never fancied a Marina though - always thought they were old technology dressed up in modern (ie 1970s 🙂) shell. As for the steel gauge I always thought the viva was pretty solid on the bits that had not rusted. Could sit on the bonnet with your mates without dinting it which you certainly couldn't on newer cars like Mk1 Fiestas, and most other cars from late 70s onwards.

Just asked my older Brother who started a apprenticeship at Ellesmere port plant in 1972. One of his first tasks was to make a toolbox from HC Viva steel. He told me HA , HB and Astra were 21 gauge steel , HC used much heavier 18 gauge steel.

I've all ways been ford myself I've had a few Vauxhalls back in the day but I've all ways like my fords more like now I've got a 20 year old focus MK1 only 1.6 but it's full service history 30 thousand miles and its only been welded once and don't need welding for a long time yet (but that's not a problem for me) but I can do everything and only gos to the garage for its MOT but any thing retro or classic are going for silly money and yes the traffic in the back ground is a bit loud it's not that bad that roof paint it black be better then a vinyl wat was on it if you not going to repaint it same colour as the body

Vauxhall for me. At the end of the day it depends on personal taste. Both have good and bad points. The main issue with the Viva was the Delco distributor that was often worn out at 50k. Ford's had carburetor issues which is why people changed over to Webber carbs. A neighbor used to own a Mk 2 escort estate that was a pig to start on cold mornings yet we had one as a runabout that never failed to start. Trouble with the seventies was indifferent build quality. But at least you could work on them.
@RetroRebuild

True mate and probably dependent on how well looked after a car had been in its life, I've heard that about the delco, I want to check mine to see if the bosh one fits👍
@roberttucker805
@roberttucker805 Ай бұрын
@RetroRebuild the Bosch dizzy will fit if it's not the earlier offset drive from the oil pump. The Bosch is a much better unit than the Delco. We had a well used chevette that had the Bosch and it never gave any trouble. Contrary to some opinions on this engine I never had any real problems apart from a snapped crankshaft on my first car but I think that was an exception to the rule.

Classic Vauxhalls for me, well after Hillmans. Have 3 Hillman Avengers and 2 Mk2 Cavaliers amongst my.....collection. Fords just don't interest me, I respect there are people who love them. Just not for me, but it's all personal taste. I love seeing people saving and restoring old and classic cars, no matter make or model. Loving the HC Viva, my dad had one. Never used it got it in leu of money owed, think he eventually sold it on. Keep up the good work.

But that said passed my test in a Vauxhall Nova so I suppose I'm actually more of a Vauxhall man!!

I've always preferred Vauxhalls to Fords. Don't know why, but probably because it was my first car and went from there. My first car was a 1256 Viva. I learned about Gerry Marshal and saw videos of Old Nail and Baby Bertha. My next car was a 2.3 Magnum saloon with Old Nail body kit which I replaced the Stromberg carbs with twin 48 Dellorto's and that made a big difference in power and torque. I also replaced the front seats with Recaro's (from a BMW) which was a big improvement, and recovered the door cards and back seats. I lowered the suspension with new, lower rear coils, and just cut the front coils down and heated the top coil to get it flat. That helped with cornering. Uprated shocks later. I then bought a 2.3 Firenza that I rebuilt the engine with big valve head and fast road cam, Droopsnoot exhaust manifold and 2" exhaust system. Replaced the gearbox with a new 5 speed ZF (same as from a Droopsnoot) and then replaced that with a ZF from (I think) a Lotus Sunbeam. That had a better first gear for acceleration. I also replaced the back axle with an LSD (4.1 ratio) one from a rejigged Capri which further increased acceleration as the old one was 3.8 or something. Bigger Ventora front brakes as well. After that. I fitted a Ford 302 V8 and a Cosworth T5 gearbox. I fitted Capri Zakspeed box arches and wider wheels and a genuine Droopsnoot nosecone. All new carpet and retrimmed interior. The Firenza had a vinyl roof but when I removed it had a rust hole on the rear pillar. I couldn't seem to stop the rust and even after treating, filling and painting it came back, so I recovered the roof with a new vinyl one. I also dechromed everything and painted it black. Your roof isn't anywhere near as bad as mine was so your roof might be just fine when rubbed down treated and painted. I still have some parts from my old Vauxhalls so thought I might get one as a project after seeing yours. Cheapest I found on eBay was around £7,500 for a bog standard model. That's way more than I'd pay for one so it looks like that's never going to happen. Shame, but like you, I'd want a double garage to work on it. I'll just have to make do with watching you and the nostalgia it invokes. :) Cheers!

You can't beat Maltesers! My Dad had a new HC Viva, his first new car - it was fine. I had a twelve year old one, it was sh!t, mostly filler & tin weevils. Not really comparable, really, his was fine because he needed it to be reliable, mine had been abused for most of it's life. Cars are often about how they've been treated as much as any inherrent flaws.

Is there anything in the garage that can go straight in the bin? Think you need the brother to come round and give you a hand at the tidy up. Make some sort of plan as to what shelves you want and where, it's a mistake I made in my shed where i put shelves in one at a time at random, so now I'm not making best use of the limited space in there and end up with a small bench to work on 😭 One of the best things I did last year was when a skip arrived i threw out alot of clutter I'd been hoarding because I couldn't do anything in there and ended up working in the garden..... sun,rain etc 🙄 Rust treatment and bonda primer for your car roof will hold things at bay til the weather improves. Put a heater in the car and it might help it dry quicker on a good day. I've been known to use a heat gun when painting as I've no patience waiting for paint to dry 🫣👍🇮🇪
