It sounds like the CNC router is the way to go if you can manage that. It's hard to imagine getting anywhere near the same precision using a jigsaw. I'm neither a sailor nor a boat builder, so I very much appreciate you sharing your journeys. They open new worlds for me. I expect the boat build will be just as fascinating as your many passages. I'm looking forward to it.

@@jonathanwetherell3609 It usually does not bring very much in terms of hours to spare to a one-off build from scratch, as long as You know what You're doing with Your jigsaw and a couple planes, at least once You take all the tries, setups, screw-ups, retries and repair/adjust/maintenance time honestly into the equation, but its definitely a cool tool, and results under the hands of someone knowing how to use it properly can be remarkable. I'm not so sure about resale value though.

recommend some bracing at the bottom of the legs (running from one leg to another,) to keep the legs stable and reduce the chance of one of the legs folding under (especially if going to be used as a stage) :)

Other than the moulds I would think that you could utilize the CNC for a multitude of other parts of the build as well and for sure it will be exact and a time saver.

Johan has mentioned an earlier career as a cabinet maker. He likely has many uses in mind for a CNC router since the boat's plans are digitized. Given his / their work ethic, experience and attention to detail, this will be a great boat! His lofting floor is a data file and the CNC is the file's hand for cutting. Too bad there are no CNC sanders.... :)

Be sure to add some diagonal supports between the legs after it is level.... just 2x2 legs don't supply enough lateral support when mounting/using a CNC; dropping sheets of plywood on it... LOL, or using it as a stage... :>)
@clstjam43212 жыл бұрын
The first steps towards your new boat! Very Cool! You may have done this already, but: I'd suggest gluing the shims to the bottom of each leg. Moving sheets of plywood can shift the platform and knock it out of level. Also, mark the floor where each leg is when you level it so you'll know if it moves. Speaking from experience here.

Those skeins of geese at 17:45… they’ve arrived here in Norfolk, UK too. Every day, morning & evening, they fly from the fields to The Wash, and back again at dusk. It’s wonderful to see thousands of them, from horizon to horizon, passing over in the half-light - and making a lot of racket. They really like to shout at each other as they fly…..

Nice windows with a view! Three useful tools: A scaffold, a 4-wheeled dolly, and maybe a boom vang (4:1 block and tackle) to lift that heavy stuff more easily. After all, this is a sailing channel, and your new boat build uses a method needing such things. It's not a CNC stage, but oak cargo palettes framed together make a really tough workbench. Mine is on wheels, too, so I can move it (and the entire toolbox) anywhere in the garage.

I expect by now in real time you’ll be cutting your moulds. However for a job this size I think I’d be opting for cnc. There’s nothing like computer precision. Unless you spend inordinate amounts of time on each mould, inaccuracies will creep in. With cnc everything fits exactly as it should - no trimming, smoothing edges, etc, and they will line up with confident precision - if something doesn’t line up you know it’s not the mould. I’d be buying a second hand cnc and then selling it afterwards for similar money. Job done!

Same method I used to build a canoe and a kayak many years ago. Building and setting up the frames was a really precision work. One mm wrong is wrong. All work making the template right decides the value of all the work later. It doesn't matter how good everything after is done, if the template is wrong. It will still be a flawed boat. Do not rush this part! Good luck.
@georgemacdonald88992 жыл бұрын
I was thinking even the angle across the template will matter, if done accurately it would be a changing curved surface. Does not seem possible to do it with laser printed based paper -> material cuts.Even the CNC would have to shape the ends, otherwise you end up with contact points on the edges of the material being the control points of the plank curvature.
@andvil012 жыл бұрын
@@georgemacdonald8899 The thickness of the templates is a factor to consider to get the right curve of the hull. The outer edge of the template should be slightly beveled. The most important leading edge, on the side at the 700 mm mark, shall touch the planking. The edge on the other side of the template shall be a few mm inside. It is ok with a mm gap on that side btw edge and planking.
@georgemacdonald88992 жыл бұрын
@@andvil01 I suppose the planking itself can't change it's curvature that quickly, so it wont dimple in at the difference between the template face and the plank face. I am presuming that the two are attached somehow(screwed/nailed/pinned/...) to hold them tight at the contact point(template edge). I was thinking that a 3D printed interface on the end of the template could match the curvature requirements exactly, not so trivial as that curvature could/should be changing in the vertical as well as the horizontal directions.
@andvil012 жыл бұрын
@@georgemacdonald8899 I used staples to fix the 5 mm planking to the frames. even with nails the planking will not bend if there is a little gap at the lower edge. Ran 3 will probably have even thicker planking. Better make sure the planking touch the leading edge all the way. I think it is hard to make an exact bevel. Machine cut or not. If you try there is the risk the planking will touch at a high spot and not the leading edge. Thats the reason I would exagerate the bevel 1-2 mm.
