Hellow Yellow, I get excited that way when I catch a fish species I have never caught before, or sometimes even ever heard of. I am glad you got to have fun finding new mushrooms. A short story, once while I was living up in Virginia in the mountains, I stopped on my way home and went fishing for a couple of trout for my supper...when I climbed down to the river from where I parked, I found a big pile of beer cans and other trash. Well, an old friend of mine once said, " There aint nothin so dirty it cant be cleaned...", and she was right. I went up to my truck, got a couple of garbage bags and went back down and cleaned up the river bank. I caught two trout, just like I had hoped, and to my smiling amazement, a full can of beer came twirling in the current, down the edge of the river, swirled in behind the big boulder I liked to fish from and I reached down and said to the river, Thank you! That was a really cool day. I like your joyful way. Smiling, George.

Those found beers are like the found mushrooms; somehow, they just seem to taste better than the store-bought variety! My father and I found nearly a case of 16oz Coors--looked as though forgotten and left behind by kids' drinking party out in a rural area (well, it was rural back then)--more than fifty years ago when we pulled into the gully mouth to hunt rabbits at first light. I savor the memory even more than I did the brews.

At the ranger station when you buy your commercial permit they provide a bag to put trash in. Still there's sooo much trash out there! Drives me nuts. I especially like collecting the fanta cans and empty cigerette boxes marking matsi patches. I take the marker and mark a gps waypoint. Thanks for the patch trash leaver.

I love the way share your enthusiasm for nature and fungi in particular combined with your meticulous scientific recording skills. You could be a trained forensic scientist. In this video you are using one of my all time favourite baskets.. I live in the UK and have only seen those baskets for sale in France where I regularly buy them. So cool the way that when they arrive from Burkina Faso they have to be saturated with water before they can be coaxed into their final shape. The talk about altitude makes me smile as the highest mountain in England is Scafell Pike at only 3215 ft. I went for my first fungal forage of the season yesterday around the edge of Dartmoor, Devon and found a good few chanterelles, hedgehog mushrooms, horse mushrooms and a few shaggy parasols. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

It's always sad to see the big trees go. I hope there are some other large ones nearby. At least the Acorn woodpeckers will enjoy that tree for awhile! For your unknown mushroom, I'll go with the Chroogomphus pseudovinicolor. Nice find! It will be a nice addition to iNaturalist! ; )

Thank you for your video! I've noticed some kind of bluish/discolored area around the giant dying pine-tree and I remember reading that it is a sign that the trees might be infected with the honey fungus (Armillaria mellea). Though it is not visible at the moment, there might be a really good harvest on this tree. You might want to check it out next year.

Perhaps a Clitocybe nuda, aka Lepista nuda. I always loved the purple shaggy/velvety ones. Nice find whatever it is and great vid! In the shot at 11:50, you look so pretty, all elated with your new fungi friend! :D Happy you guys are back.

Please! 🙏🏼 For season 2 do a video on the Amanita Muscaria! 🍄🍄🍄 There’s so much ignorance around it, that its poisonous and you cannot eat it. The shaman would use this medicinally and I feel it maybe much more important than we know. I always learn so much from your videos, like today the elevation talk was interesting & I was also excited for you to find something new and undiscovered for yourself. I am happy to be able to catch you “live” for season 2 where just weeks ago I was watching all your 4 year old videos wishing you were still active, not even dreaming that you would return after that long! So love your relaxed style yet with exuberant enthusiasm. Makes me want to join you on a stroll. Anyway...seems the mushroom was never positively identified, so I wanted to throw in a guess. Based on the videos and pic plus the fact that you mentioned the grayish green spores, leads me to believe this is the Chroogomphus vinicolor. The dark-brown cap, gills and stipe (you mentioned their might be a partial veil too that left sign high up on the stipe) all lead to this identification. What did you determine after you research?

It's made by Olloclip, I use the 3 in 1 macro lens. Be careful not to buy one from third party sellers, some friends of mine have received knock offs that fall apart easily. I love using it!

Definitely more organised than I am. I've only found one potentially undescribed mushroom. I didn't take any pictures, just assumed I had a good idea what genus it would be, which I didn't, assumed it would be a quick and simple google search like normal, and I'd have a name. I was definitely overly lax about it. It just sat on my bedside table until it went moldy, and now I'm only left with a valuable lesson and regret. Not something I bring up often as I'm no mycologist by any means, and I don't think people realise how few fungi are known to science, so I don't wanna sound presumptuous to the layperson by explaining i may have found something new. Also it sounds worse when you literally have no proof. Out of curiosity, where would you send a specimen for identification if you thought you found something new? Would be good to know for next time.

Oh bummer, photos are so helpful! Connect with your local Mycological Society. They'll know the best place to send things locally or will have someone in house who does things like that. Also, check to see if there is a Mycoflora project in your area, mycoflora.org.

Just a thought. Regarding surrounding soil ph levels, would it be useful to take a soil sample from around the mushroom, perhaps including some of the mycelium, to take home and examine further? Maybe measure the ph when you get home?

The unknown mushrooms might be pholiota carbonaria. I've just seen similar ones on Facebook, they grew in Israel, in the pines and the forest has been burning before.
