Something In The Sky!

Good morning everyone! I hope you all are happy safe and healthy.
All of the birds seem to be in a great mood this morning. I brought them out some yummy lettuce and apple slices today. They all seemed to enjoy the apple. A little drama this morning with a group of three hawks flying around. Watching all the kids run for cover and the roosters warning everyone. So weird to see three of them together like that. Maybe a family or something. I scared them off but I am sure they will be back. Jerks.
I have been outside so many times already today to just check on them. I know that the hawks are out there all the time and they all have been fine so far but it still worries me.

When the babies all ran back into their coop! That was amazing. There is a level of communication between the whole flock that fascinates me.

I wonder if the chicks had seen them, and that's why they were hesitant about coming out at first. Juarez is the best at keeping on eye out and warning everyone when he sees something, let him know what a great job he does and how proud I am of him ❤

The warning must have already been out & that why the kids didn't want to come out. Very impressive to see them run back to the safety of their crate when the others alerted. Left with an uneasy feeling today. I know you will do what you can to protect everyone the best you can.

Hawks are no joke. Our next door neighbors Chihuahua was taken by a hawk last week from the mini forest behind our house. Glad the kids took heed and went back home. Hope the flock will be ok. These birds are family, and We love them accordingly! 🦃🐓🐥💜

Chicken hawks are never good. The birdies all knew the hawks were out there. That's why the babies were huddled together. The turkey boys are great alarm callers, everybody just freezes. Looks funny when that happens, especially the geese mafia frozen facing the same direction. Lol. Please hang out for a day or too. If the babies are scared, leave them inside. They're just precious! 🙏🥰 Love your birdies, I'd hate to see any of these disappear.

Yeah, Raptors are scary when you've got a flock to care for. Probably half of my losses were from aerial strikes, the other half foxes and coyotes.

What kind of raptors? Cooper's Hawks seem too small to grab adult chickens, let alone ducks or geese.

@@elizabethhenning778 Red tail hawks have struck my chickens, guineas and ducks in the past. I've also found a couple of our ducks decapitated overnight, possibly due to owls. Of course raccoons, foxes, and coyotes can be bad news too, and I believe that the telltale sign of opossum damage is disembowelment of hens bearing eggs. The land based predators can be kept at bay by good fences, and owls are not a problem if everyone is inside at night, but big hawks can strafe the poultry yard at will. I strung high visibility rope up all around the poultry yard of my old place like it was Omaha beach on D-day to keep the raptor pressure down. I think it worked fairly well. My new farm has a lot more exposed open spaces. Kyle's yard looks pretty good. Lots of shelter and bolt holes, but the babies worry me.

You must take action right away to protect them. Hawks are relentless and will take the opportunity, don’t think they won’t, please! Hawks and owls are just living as they are made to do so don’t hate on them. Just be proactive to protect your defenseless birds.

We have a lot of hawks here - came out to check on my flock the other day and the largest one I had ever seen flew out if the tree next to the coop/run. Ours don't get to free range given the large number of predators we have - wish we could. I know the geese are a deterrent - do the turkeys deter Raptors at all in a mixed flock? I do so love your turkeys and the Sebastapol geese!

@@ramibu239 Mooncake is used to being by them. I am sure if she was free ahe wouod be happy to taow one out. She is a large Redtail. My gf and mooncake will hunt together this fall for small game like squirrels and rabbits. Hopefully we get some great hunting vids with the GoPro to put on her channel. Pretty amazing to be walking the woods with a free flying hawk tagging along with you.

Keep a close eye out today Juarez! Keep everyone safe from the hawks. Hope the pups are on patrol too! I'm sure JD is keeping a close watch today. The babies had seemed hesitant today to come out. If you listen close you can hear the warning call of a cardinal in the background because of the hawks. Nice to see Slate get down today and see Jimmy and Randle. Maybe you should get a drone or RCA that makes a lot of noise and fly it close to the tree they are in and land it back in the yard several times and it may scare them so they will not come near the area. Lol I guess. Just a thought 🙂

As the queen of typos (especially w/ a numb thumb, I just thought I'd let you know). But yes...I agree! However, I'm not sure but I think hawks might be daytime hunters. Especially more at sunrise & dusk (someone please correct me if I'm wrong as I'd like to learn!!!). If he had a problem w/ owls then they would all need to go in at night. He really needs to gett some netting over his yard, but as large as it is I'm afraid that's probably near to impossible.

Steve must have scared the hell out of those hawks. They got spooked that a giant goose head is poking out to the sky from the coop. years ago i was out working with my dad and a hawk just swooped down out of nowhere and attacked one of our geese. thankfully we were able to run over and bat it away before any damage was done (except to the poor goose's heart)

@SelfHidden the same goose was attacked by something a few weeks earlier and almost killed, and we couldn't figure out what had attacked him until (I'm guessing) the same hawk came back to finish the job. poor guy, that goose was one of my favorite pets of my youth. dude was full of personality

Did you see all the kids run into the coop @7:31? Someone must have sounded the alarm. Good Ol' Uncle Roy was guarding the entrance (@10:50) so nothing would harm the babies. If necessary, Juarez can perform a little "Kung Pow Chicken" on those hawks. (Roy and Juarez are super dudes!) ❤️ 🐓 👊

Wasn't that always the case? I thought Juarez runs away from Roy (and the other white roosters when they were present), and Roy runs away from Brock. Brock and Juarez get along well. But then Juarez has no problem attacking the turkeys while the other roosters run away from them, so go figure.
