One thing in particular about those two pairs of voices, they both had that quality of "urgency." They can go from one end of the pitch spectrum to the other without much effort at all and still maintain vocal strength. Tina Marie could do much the same minus that same strength. On this note, Stephanie recorded a song where she does exactly the same thing that Whitney did at the end of her rendition of the national anthem. She 'climbs' three notes in a phrase quickly, with that classic urgency, and then slips right back into the rest of the tune. They, along with Patti, Chaka, Cheryl (Lynn) were/are phenomenal singers (I'll use the term Stephanie used while guesting on the Breakfast Club, . . . REAL SINGERS!!!)

I must have been around 10 or 11 when this came out - either way, this is the song/video that introduced me to Stephanie Mills and I've been a fan ever since. I was all kinds of thrilled when I had to go back and discover the work she put out prior to this and I was blown away. I'm so very glad I was exposed to her work before she stepped away from r&b. She needs her own Unsung episode. She was briefly mentioned in Angela Winbush's episode, but I'd love to hear about Stephanie. What a voice!

Ms. Mills said she used to help him with his laundry. She must have been a great technical source for MJ for his movie since she was the first Dorothy in the stage production.
