Not surprised it was getting hot. The engine bay is fully stuffed with a big heater and the airflow is 3/4 blocked with a big winch. The original arrangement with the straight 6 and no winch was just adequate in summer heat. Now you need a good off-road test to prove you got it right and don't forget to record it, lol.😉😉

Back in the day... around 84 or so when my friends and I were into wheeling I had a 1954 Willies Overland. It had the original radiator but I had fitted a Ford 302 in place of the old L head four-cylinder. During the summer in eastern Washington, it got a lot hotter then here in the seattle area and I had over heating issues when on camping trips and wheeling in the mountains. My solution was a ten foot section of 2 inch copper pipe cut in the middle and folded back on itself with a 90 degree fitting running along the underside of the truck tucked up next to the frame. Being a welder I slotted the tubes in a chevron pattern and brazed in 1/16th inch flat stock. A manifold placed in line with the heater hoses made it possible to divert all the water through the frame radiator or close it off so the water only went to the heater in the cab. There was no extra room under the hood for a wider radiator so I would have had to have a multi-core radiator custom built which was very expensive for a 20-year-old. It worked great until I shoehorned a 460 into it with a C6 and an NP 205 transfer case. I added another "radiator" on the drivers' side frame and all was cool again. Then I started breaking axles, LOL. it worked beautifully until one cold winter we went wheeling and I forgot to check my antifreeze freeze temp. One of the frame rads froze and blew antifreeze all over the front tire, I lost steering control and rammed into a snow bank... End of Willies... R.I.P. I miss that truck and all the fun we had together.

Paul, your fan shroud is doing nothing but blocking airflow, so about 1/2 of your radiator is just dead air space. A shroud is supposed to direct air movement to the parts of the radiator not directly in front of the fan, not be a solid barrier right up against the radiator. You'd be better off with out it and just having the fan hang in the middle. If you find yourself still overheating, that's why. 19:07 "It's pulling the whole radiator" he said as the cloth isn't getting pull into the top right corner, I noticed that's where you did an awkward edit.

@auldman2 жыл бұрын
Pondering - putting the road sign so close to the rad surely blocks 20-25% of the rad from having cooling air flowing through it. Would it not be better to flip the road sign so the yellow side is by the fan thereby giving a 1/2"-3/4" stand off to let air flow across whole area of the rad? With the front bodywork off, there will be more airflow, so not a real test. You may have to cut a few louvres to allow the air to flow better out of the engine bay.

Nonsense. You're pusuing an unnecessary ideal of an "unobstructed" radiator, which is not practical given the intended purpose of this rig. Really liked the explanation of why you went with that fan. It’s useful to me to hear your reasoning
@aussiebloke6092 жыл бұрын
A good fan is necessary when crawling at low speeds, but irrelevant for driving speeds - the vehicle pushing through the air has much more effect than the fan. If you're overheating at normal driving speeds, either the original shroud was too restrictive and reducing the amount of _passive_ air flow (and this new shroud looks to be significantly more restrictive), or your air flow is blocked by lights and winch ahead of the rad.
@telecasterfool17732 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking. Above about 40 mph, I usually have the fans off, even with the air conditioning on. I am not a mechanic or any kind of auto professional. Just a guy who customizes towing vehicles.
@aussiebloke6092 жыл бұрын
@@telecasterfool1773 It's the same reason F1 cars don't even have fans - so long as they're not left idling too long, or driving at low speeds, there's no need for a fan at all. So if Yota is overheating while driving, but not while crawling, it's not a fan or rad size problem - which means there's just not enough air being forced through the rad at speed.
@dustymojave2 жыл бұрын
Apparently you guys have not watched the entire video or were not paying attention because Paul stated in describing the problem that the engine runs cool when crawling, but gets hot on the road. Exactly the OPPOSITE of what you 3 guys and some other commenters have said.
@aussiebloke6092 жыл бұрын
@@dustymojave We know exactly what we're saying. We're considering the possibility that Paul got this one wrong. We know he said he's not overheating when crawling - but that indicates that the fan isn't the problem, as that's when fans are worked the hardest, under high load and low speeds. However, fans are rarely used at all when driving at normal speeds when airflow through the grille becomes much more significant - suggesting that he's maybe blocking too much incoming air with the winch and bumper, or that the shroud may have been too close to the radiator and prevented air from being driven through the entire radiator surface.

Where you have an LS, would Dexcool be a better coolant option? I know they say as long as you don’t mix coolants with LS’s you should be okay, but I’m not sure if it also as better cooling properties with those engines.
@keithhogan69972 жыл бұрын
The different colors of coolant are supposed to be formulated for the internals of the specific brands of engines to best take of the insides. If Dexcool was OEM that's what I'd be running.
@MegaDysart2 жыл бұрын
Dexcool was just GMs more environmentally "safe" coolant, it really isn't any better than regular ethylene glycol and some testing done indicates that it tends to react with oxygen and caused huge issues with the 3100 and 3300 engines. Don't know why they used it for so long.

I concur on the Ford Crown Vic cooling abilities. I was a CA. Highway Patrolman for my career with many years in the Sacramento area where it gets 110 in the summer. I could leave my Crown Vic parked and running for 2-3 hours on the hottest of days and come back to it and it wouldn't even be breathing hard. The inside of the car would be nice and cool. I always appreciated that about the Crown Vic's.

Paul I noticed a significant temperature increase in my jeep jk when I put my winch in font of air intake of rad. I didn't think the winch was such a air blocker.

My buddy has the same problem. So he removed the winch and has receivers front and rear with power connections, so he keeps the winch strapped down in the back of the Jeep.

Question!, wouldn't it make more sense to put seat belt on than listen to the " buckle your seatbelt", alarm every 20 seconds?.

Next time you re-work the fan radiator Paul start by removing the winch make a reciever mount, stow the winch in the bed, Air flow applies to air in and out, you made everything too tight when you mounted the winch, good luck !

Okay, it's official. Paul is not allowed to use taps without a drill. He seemed like he was so gentle and proper, and then exit stage left. Lmao

Great job guys!! At about 17:58 we can see that the shroud will be setting about 1/2" inch off the core to give air flow over the full core. Love it.
@saliston2 жыл бұрын
MY guess is its not getting enough air due to everything in front of the radiator blocking it from breathing.

This rig spends the majority of its life in the desert at very low speeds, I air flow around the grill is an issue as it would be on a street driven vehicle .

You're blocking airflow to the area outside of the fan itself. You're blocking about a third of the radiator. You need some airspace. See how the fan was installed in the Crown Vic, with space between it and the radiator, and you'll see what I mean.
@supersport19862 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing but actually looks like there is about 1/2 or so of air space between the flat of the shroud and the core of the rad so I think it's gonna be pretty good but I guess time will tell
@Druid_Plow2 жыл бұрын
That's what the shroud is for. Without the shroud, the fan would pull air from around the gap instead of pulling through the rad fins. Closer is better for a fan that is pulling through a radiator, have seen it tested using computer water cooling. Rad fan is also supplementary. in "ideal" conditions, something like 75° and moving 35+, the rad alone would be enough to keep it cool. But slowly crawling on rocks in the desert is far from ideal 😆
@thejackofalltravels82672 жыл бұрын
I thought so at first but it is a cross flow radiator so the fan draws from everywhere. There’s a slight dead spot against the sign but the sign will draw heat.
