Pondering - putting the road sign so close to the rad surely blocks 20-25% of the rad from having cooling air flowing through it. Would it not be better to flip the road sign so the yellow side is by the fan thereby giving a 1/2"-3/4" stand off to let air flow across whole area of the rad? With the front bodywork off, there will be more airflow, so not a real test. You may have to cut a few louvres to allow the air to flow better out of the engine bay.

When I hear " over heating while driving" my first thought is air restrictions. I'd bet that winch in the way is the problem.

Not surprised it was getting hot. The engine bay is fully stuffed with a big heater and the airflow is 3/4 blocked with a big winch. The original arrangement with the straight 6 and no winch was just adequate in summer heat. Now you need a good off-road test to prove you got it right and don't forget to record it, lol.😉😉

Back in the day... around 84 or so when my friends and I were into wheeling I had a 1954 Willies Overland. It had the original radiator but I had fitted a Ford 302 in place of the old L head four-cylinder. During the summer in eastern Washington, it got a lot hotter then here in the seattle area and I had over heating issues when on camping trips and wheeling in the mountains. My solution was a ten foot section of 2 inch copper pipe cut in the middle and folded back on itself with a 90 degree fitting running along the underside of the truck tucked up next to the frame. Being a welder I slotted the tubes in a chevron pattern and brazed in 1/16th inch flat stock. A manifold placed in line with the heater hoses made it possible to divert all the water through the frame radiator or close it off so the water only went to the heater in the cab. There was no extra room under the hood for a wider radiator so I would have had to have a multi-core radiator custom built which was very expensive for a 20-year-old. It worked great until I shoehorned a 460 into it with a C6 and an NP 205 transfer case. I added another "radiator" on the drivers' side frame and all was cool again. Then I started breaking axles, LOL. it worked beautifully until one cold winter we went wheeling and I forgot to check my antifreeze freeze temp. One of the frame rads froze and blew antifreeze all over the front tire, I lost steering control and rammed into a snow bank... End of Willies... R.I.P. I miss that truck and all the fun we had together.

Nonsense. You're pusuing an unnecessary ideal of an "unobstructed" radiator, which is not practical given the intended purpose of this rig. All that's needed is sufficient air flow through the radiator to perform the cooling that's required. A solution that meets those needs is good enough and all that's needed.

Elevated temps at speed are generally an indication of passive airflow issues rather than a problem with the fan. It was likely cooling fine during testing because you removed all of the obstructions in front of the radiator. I worry with the grill back on it will run hot again.

@Druid_Plow

That's what the shroud is for. Without the shroud, the fan would pull air from around the gap instead of pulling through the rad fins. Closer is better for a fan that is pulling through a radiator, have seen it tested using computer water cooling. Rad fan is also supplementary. in "ideal" conditions, something like 75° and moving 35+, the rad alone would be enough to keep it cool. But slowly crawling on rocks in the desert is far from ideal 😆

-- You really optimized that fan's vacuum force with that road sign shroud. Fact that you're pulling all four corners proves that. Hope it's sealed as close to 100 percent as it can be. To state the obvious, it'll run hotter when fully assembled, but how much, bearing in mind your trans cooler will take a lode off, and you also have manual control over the high speed setting. Think you'll be alright. Just not a lot of room there with that 6.0. Put your dash switches, and your kid's RC knowledge to work: Build some servo controlled louvers you can switch control into the hood. It might restrict a lil airflow from the sign, but the fact is he's tripled the airflow from the dual fan setup, so losing 18% from the flat shroud will still be a vast improvement over the previous fans, btw before you internet judges say anymore, go read a book about ( hydrodynamic mechanics) rads have cores which are independent of the other cores allowing air to flow all the way around core. Great shroud Paul love the design

you should cut vents and mount the smaller fans on the outside near the windshield. this will draw the hottest air out of the engine bay. this will also reduce pressure so more flow still.
@gwood69

Out of all the “advice” the arm chair experts give Paul I can actually get on board with this one lol but then again we gotta think about the draw they’ll have especially when rad fan is running in high and then winch draw too. I’d probably wire up an independent switch so like when you’re sitting waiting in line for an obstacle or something you can flip them bad boys on then when you gotta go turn them back off? I like this idea man

Ok good job with replacing the twin cooling fans that just didn't move enough air with the crown Victoria fan that definitely moves more air and will keep the FJ cooler because it definitely needs to stay cool doing what it does! We love the visits that Grandma makes and does her joking around about "her favorite son"! Them boys would starve to death if she didn't stop by to visit! Another awesome video from Paul and Ben doing their magic! Keep up the good work!

A good fan is necessary when crawling at low speeds, but irrelevant for driving speeds - the vehicle pushing through the air has much more effect than the fan. If you're overheating at normal driving speeds, either the original shroud was too restrictive and reducing the amount of _passive_ air flow (and this new shroud looks to be significantly more restrictive), or your air flow is blocked by lights and winch ahead of the rad.
@telecasterfool1773

That's what I was thinking. Above about 40 mph, I usually have the fans off, even with the air conditioning on. I am not a mechanic or any kind of auto professional. Just a guy who customizes towing vehicles.
@aussiebloke609
@aussiebloke609 Жыл бұрын
@@telecasterfool1773 It's the same reason F1 cars don't even have fans - so long as they're not left idling too long, or driving at low speeds, there's no need for a fan at all. So if Yota is overheating while driving, but not while crawling, it's not a fan or rad size problem - which means there's just not enough air being forced through the rad at speed.
@dustymojave
@dustymojave Жыл бұрын
Apparently you guys have not watched the entire video or were not paying attention because Paul stated in describing the problem that the engine runs cool when crawling, but gets hot on the road. Exactly the OPPOSITE of what you 3 guys and some other commenters have said.
@aussiebloke609
@aussiebloke609 Жыл бұрын
@@dustymojave We know exactly what we're saying. We're considering the possibility that Paul got this one wrong. We know he said he's not overheating when crawling - but that indicates that the fan isn't the problem, as that's when fans are worked the hardest, under high load and low speeds. However, fans are rarely used at all when driving at normal speeds when airflow through the grille becomes much more significant - suggesting that he's maybe blocking too much incoming air with the winch and bumper, or that the shroud may have been too close to the radiator and prevented air from being driven through the entire radiator surface.

Paul, your fan shroud is doing nothing but blocking airflow, so about 1/2 of your radiator is just dead air space. A shroud is supposed to direct air movement to the parts of the radiator not directly in front of the fan, not be a solid barrier right up against the radiator. You'd be better off with out it and just having the fan hang in the middle. If you find yourself still overheating, that's why. 19:07 "It's pulling the whole radiator" he said as the cloth isn't getting pull into the top right corner, I noticed that's where you did an awkward edit.

Paul & Ben : This rig combined with your HOT weather… Some easy extra cooling could be achieved by mounting several water misters in front of the condenser & radiator for when you need EXTRA cooling. The amount of evaporative cooling that would happen with your typically DRY air would be very significant. The small mister pump could be programmed to come on only when the temperature is getting on the high side of normal operating temperature. The reservoir should be filled with distilled water so minerals don’t deposit on the radiator.
