Friend, the gouache I got separated for some reason. Like the pigment and the binder separated. I poured it all out and mixed it, but it was still very transparent.

Zinc an Titanium whites are completely different colors. Zinc tends to be a warmer off-white, while Titanium is a truly white white.

I was so optimistic until that gouache came along! Thank you! Yeah I refuse to let the art suffer and a pen like that should of been in there from the start. I was genuinely miffed by how empty the box felt overall.

Those Derwent boxes are their standard bulk boxes, which they use for all of their ranges (excluding Academy). Scrawlrbox might have received the pencils in those and just reused them when mixing up the colours. The older Inktenses had indeed different colours on their barrels -- the blue was more translucent and the pencils had more variation. The gouache batch has been through some stuff... Yours was fairly well mixed, but everyone I've seen had a poor quality one! Idk if they're cutting costs and got a batch cheaply or if their storage was at fault. Zinc white is a transparent white but I guess the DR one shouldn't be /that/ transparent based on the marking and the fact it uses pw6 as well. 🤔 For me this was a "meh" box and I'm glad I skipped. I'm over the small brushes and I'm not a fan of the Inktense (and I already have everything in this box). But it was a good introductory box for someone newer and the prompt was great. Overall, not mad about it, but not too excited either. 🤷 Nice to see your take on it! Didn't think of visual journalling, but great idea. This box + a fineliner (or other pen) would be a great take everywhere set for someone wanting to start vj. 👏

I kind of figured that was the case, it makes sense. Less waste that way which is a plus. The newer pencils do look smarter thats for sure! I did mix it with the end of the paintbrush to get that better result, that was when I was comparing the 2 white shades (my tube of Titanium White had been sitting around for a while so it needed the mix so to be fair to it I gave the Zinc White a mix as well) but even then I wasn't impressed, especially with the way it dried. I've never had a gouache dry like that! Daler Rowney are very hit or miss with the sheer amount of stuff they produce, some of their stuff is great but its things like this that really leave a sour taste. The Marketing really emphasises clean mixes - yeah so clean its invisible...lol It makes me wonder did the Scrawlr team only read the marketing for it and give it the benefit of the doubt? because before I sell anything to anyone I at the very least sample it. It seems like it slipped through both quality control of both Daler Rowney and Scrawlrbox if that the case. I hope not! That additional PW5 in the Zinc White must be really messing with that formula because the plain PW6 Titanium white has no issues whatsoever. Its been 10+ years since I've used Inktense pencils so it was nice to revisit them. Yeah for the mixing of colours I used a size 6 Van Gogh travel brush. This box just felt empty to me and could have done with an extra pen at the very least. It gave me a visual journaling vibe since the prompt description said "Collect your thoughts, a mishmash of items or the ingredients of your day." It also went into a bit of vj on the same page. I'm very well versed with the quality Scrawlrbox used to have for a cheaper price tag as I had a subscription from box 10 in 2016 until box 51 in 2019, during that time I went from a university Illustration student to a professional with a side of Graphic Design, so safe to say my OG Scrawlrbox subscription had an impact on my artistic journey. I came back for a 6 box subscription for boxes 100 - 105 to see what has changed and it has had some aesthetic improvements but functionally it's really not as good for a pretty substantial price hike. I plan on doing a round-up video of my thoughts, prices and everything after I'm done with box 105, so I'm taking note of productive ways to suggest improving the boxes for a better customer experience. Eek, that gouache looks a bit sad and old, yick…. Oh….and just a pedantic point ‘cos that’s me, lol……but “opaque” is only a 2-syllable word….o-payq… not o-pay-ik 🫶🤗
