This story really pulled me in. I think Evelyn passed the night she woke up at midnight and he couldn’t wake her up the following morning. And sadly yes, very relatable. I understand Evelyn wanting to choose where she died. I understand the despair that swallows Tommy. This story conjures a deep, twisted, and beautiful sorrow. There was so much sadness, release, and almost joy when Tommy died. Interesting how the author conveyed Tommy’s confusion upon seeing his grandmother was already there. This is a work of art- thank you!

I feel like I would have figwir out a bit later, but having read this before that nwin the story did help me think about what could be signs of death in how they went on. Like the extra excrement (because bodies relax all their muscles, so it's not uncommon for people who just died to shit and piss themselves) or the fact that she can't raise her arm. He is literally taking care of a corpse.
@noviibutnotactive8385 Жыл бұрын
This is by far the best horror story I've ever read, they (the writer) somehow managed to depict death as disgusting, beautiful, scary, peaceful, and all other contradicting words in this cohesive narrative. Especially with the denial of death, I caught on almost immediately that Tommy was caring for his grandmother's corpse, and the portrayal of the delusion was done perfectly without being too obvious or sudden. Evelyn's care is all too familiar to me, as a child my mother had to help my great-grandfather during the final years of his life after a long battle against Alzheimer's disease. I dont remember much as that period of my life was one of the hardest, but this story perfectly encapsulates the feeling of helplessness, anger, sadness, and loneliness when watching a loved one slowly pass away.

Halfway through this story all I could think about is how horrible of a Grandmother she was. Because of her fear she crippled her grandson socially and mentally which led to the way this story played out 😢
@BOFAMET Жыл бұрын
I think the point of the story is that Granny and Grandson were both just victims of life circumstance and the inherent indifference of death and truama, and were doing the best with what they had. People always want stories to have a villain or "bad guy" to blame EVERYTHING on but the fact is, life is much more complicated than that. And it's easy to judge when you're an outsider looking in, safe from the same unfair circumstances that turn people "horrible".
@Mygg_Jeager Жыл бұрын
@@BOFAMETsounds like you're trying to justify her horrible actions. People are complicated. But what's unforgivable about her is that she had her moment of clarity. She realized how she had failed her grandson so spectacularly. And instead of changing her ways last-minute, and having a heart-to-heart with him about how he's going to have to grow up without her, she sends him to his grave. Over her own vanity. She didn't ask for the gun or for medically assisted suicide, she sent him armed against the police. That is unforgivable. He on the other hand, the man who attempted murder against officers of the law, is much more understandable as a victim. And ultimately, is forgivable.

I agree with your thought process. That's how I took the story too. She was alive during the first half of the story but, he kept her alive in his mind after she died cause he couldn't let go of her. When you live with and take of someone for so long and they become the world to you you pick up on all of their habits, mannerisms, speech, and other quirks that when you suffer a loss that great sometimes it can break people to the point that they become delusional and carry on as if nothing has changed. Dude don’t apologize I am actually so happy you got a break you’ve been doing INSANE work and it’s always top quality too. You really are THE English reading KZbin channel and I’m yet to find a Chanel that comes close to your quality. TAKE BREAKS!! As for the story, I for some reason love the trope of someone dying and OP not acknowledging it to a point of becoming deluded, it’s scratches my brain. I think she definitely died during the night where she described being consumed by a void, the massive amount of feces (which usually happens shortly after death because of reflexes shutting off), the sudden change in tone, the lack of food or WATER and most importantly, this being the last moment in the story which we get from her POV are such big indicators. I think it’s so interesting how seemingly the hallucination of his grandmother were harsh and cold in the beginning but increasingly overly sweet and ego stroking. I think the delusions came from a place of defence where his mind didn’t want to acknowledge she died and more so all alone when he promised to be by her side, and schizophrenic hallucinations were easier to process. That line about him seeing her corpse for a split second despite hearing her voice UGH that was SO good, I was sure that’d be his breaking point where he realizes what’s actually happening but it just kept going! I am kind of wondering about the description of death in this and if it’s real seeing as they both experienced it and in that case why death was after him. Either way this was SUCH a good story and you guys killed it as always ❤️❤️❤️

The ending was mind blowing when you actually realize what had happened. I want to listen to it over again with all the new information I have and see if I can spot any new details that give it away that she was actually gone halfway through. But that being said, it's so sad how Tommy had to grow up, she sabatoged his whole life.

I'm sorry...I just can't bear this one right now. My 75 yr old dad has Parkinsons and liver failure. I'm not well myself and the rest of the family has pushed us away the last few years. I have him, our four cats, and my bff of over 25 yrs and her girls. Once Dad is gone I'll be alone. Why hear it when you already live it? Not scared except for my own uncertain future.

Yep. Add to the fact that she intentionally screwed him up throughout his childhood to make sure he'd never leave her, it becomes beyond tragic.

I rarely complement the writer. But this is poignant and horrific. Kudos. What I like about this is that this is Adult horror - something that every adult fears: having to let go of their aging, manipulative and sometimes spiteful parents piece by piece. This is not the usual dumb Something-the-killer, or a recycled ghost story... this is something that can be very real. What I think: Yes, the grandmother obviously died earlier. And her last fear was regarding her grandson because she knows how much she screwed him up. The grandson's world was only his grandmother. He had nothing outside of her (both due to him not rebelling and due to her manipulations), and he obviously had a mental breakdown when she passed. Obviously the cops handled a mental breakdown as they usually do in public imagination - while in reality they would have called EMS to talk with the grandson and just hangout in the background if the thing starts going wilde... oh, wait... this is set in the US. nevermind.
@yesterdayitrained Жыл бұрын
I agree with every word you wrote. And yes, I live in the U.S.- those that have non-violent breakdowns often get killed instead of help. The neighbor was beyond cruel- his motives were never well-intentioned. Why is it human nature, it seems, to look down, to push down, those who are already suffering so much?

I agree with your take on the story. I have been a geriatric, psych and wound nurse for 30 years and this story hits close to home. Something else I take from the story is how some children seem to stay in denial when their parents or grandparents are at the.end.of their lives. I have also seen children that have been manipulated by their parents into taking care of them when it is clear that a nursing home would be the best option. Then there are the parents that are dropped off at the facility and never have a visitor. I have to admit I started crying when she started giving him extra deserts and stopped reminding him to shower.

I agree, I was thinking she died halfway through when death came down on her and he was so messed up mentally that he was taking care of her dead body as if she was alive. I kind of expected the police to discover her decomposing body after Tommy was shot but I guess the author wanted to leave us with our imagination to come up with our own ending. I really liked this one though! The style of the story was my favorite type. Easy to follow and understand unlike some where I’m totally confused about what is happening. Sorry you got sick man and I’m glad you are feeling better now!
@21stcenturymouse Жыл бұрын
yep, Grandma's dead. The multiple references to Hitchcock are definitely pointing to Psycho, indicating the main character is giving his dead grandma a "voice" just like Norman Bates did with his mother. We've got a corpse in the house.
@superboyx2837 Жыл бұрын
Listened to this once it came out but needed to wrap my head around this sad sad story. I figured the grandma died when death first got her. When tommy was like moving her head she was basically dead but reanimated back to her “prime” meant it was just him imagining. But near the end when she suggested getting the nurse for a brief moment I thought it was the one who insist but he wasn’t. The moment the smell came I knew she was indeed dead and the ending. This poor boy had nothing basically. The grandma intentionally kept him dependent because of her grief and he had no real life it was just waisted and squandered

This one really hit home for me. My older sister and I stayed with our grandmother while she was on hospice care back in 2016. One of the hardest things ive ever had to do. And i dont know how my sister managed to do it cause that was only about 2 years after she had done the same thing for her mother in law. I cooked the last meal my grandmother ate before she passed. And some people might take comfort in that thought with their loved ones, for me I wish i couldve made her something special instead of hamburger helper. I completely agree with your theory though. As soon as Jason came to their door and the story mentioned the horrible smell I was like yeah shes gotta be dead. I thought maybe she was dead the entire time at first but idk i think youre right about her dying part way through the story. Cause as the story progressed his grandmother would call him a “good boy” and give him more admiration. Which is the one thing that he seemingly thrived on. Once i came to the conclusion that she was dead thats when the little “hitchcock” reference clicked for me. Im still not sure when she died for sure but my guess is that she either died during the night when she woke up and Tommy wasnt there OR Tommy accidentally killed her when he fired his gun 3 times. Even if he didnt kill her at that point i believe she was definitely dead. Besides the fact that he shot his own foot i think when he went to change evelyn after he bandaged his foot up, he struggled so much because she was dead. He couldnt lift her out of the bed so easily because of her dead weight and/or possibly rigor-mortis may have already set in at that point which would make changing her/lifting her/etc. extremely tiring and difficult for anyone let alone someone with a bullet wound in their foot.
@yesterdayitrained Жыл бұрын
I think the night she woke up at midnight- because he couldn’t wake her up the following morning. Which would mean she died alone. The one thing neither of them wanted.
