My parents own a very old house that used to be a stage coach stop. Since subscribing to your channel I am now interested in maybe digging up an area known to have been an outhouse to see what treasures are waiting to be discovered. I have a question on how long until digging down isn’t it an issue with the waste. I assume being that it has been a very long time it’s ok at this point but I couldn’t find anything online explaining a measurable time in which the old contents had biodegraded. Thank you.

Really enjoying your channel - just found it this week. Props as well to the cameraman/filming (sound is great too), and appreciate that you give us a good look at what you pull out. The explanations on the spot are great, and the post-production info and historical adverts are a treat. Perhaps you have a video of this already, but would love a sort of history tutorial of bottle styles and any other info - even about privies, lol.

Hi Jake, I love watching your videos from here in France. It's actually quite relaxing. One suggestion - I know your core interest is in glass bottles but I was wondering if it might behoove you to use a metal detector (one of those wand-shaped ones) - I'm pretty sure some of the depositors must have dropped the occasional coin in there, too. Especially in the privies after emptying their shoo fly bottle of whiskey. Bon courage...

I've viewed a big chunk of your videos and find them engrossing. Thank you. I think it would be great to compile your finds in a database and cross reference location, suspected age, known info on inhabitants, businesses, categories and condition of finds, etc. You could do this retrospectively using your videos and then prospectively. I'm impressed not only with the number of alcohol-related bottles, but also the proportion of patent medicines, extracts, pill containers, and general apothecary containers. I find the amount of opioid and opioid-alcohol remedies noteworthy, despite my existing knowledge about them. You could partner with a university researcher (pharmacy program, addiction medicine residency, public health, anthropology department, etc.) to study these data. A grad student in need of a thesis topic/job could perform much of the work. There's a story to be told and interpreted. I'm sure there is a state historical society, that might be a first step.

I find it fascinating as well for many of these reasons. With all of the water borne illnesses, cholera, typhoid fever, etc., its no surprise to find the amount of whiskey and beer bottles, and medicine bottles - didn't see any Bromo caffeine bottles this time. I'm so glad that over the years, we figured out how to keep our drinking water safe and clean. Seems there was much suffering with stomach issues, which seems like a never ending circle. Drinking water posed a huge risk to your health. Alcohol was the safer choice. But then you risk addiction and the health issues related to that. The times may have changed, but in many ways we didn't change that much. As a country, we still need our alcohol, opioids, and caffeine - despite our cleaner water.

I appreciate the platt map at the beginning. I was able to enlarge it & pause to get my bearings!---What is your understanding of how hard it would have been for the pharmacies to get approval to add alcohol to their preparations during Prohibition?---As a kid in the 50's, I LOVED the Hamms commercials!---Jake, are you the official ground water emptier when the bottles come up from the depths!---I only feel sadness when broken dollies are unearthed. But, I get creeped out when shoes come out...uff da.
