Exodus 21:23-24 is the origin of eye for eye, tooth for tooth. This is from the Torah, which actual JUDGES and not common people were to enact justice and help a wronged party (such as treating an accidental injury leading to miscarriage as an actual accident murder) Jesus was not telling people to stop following the law. But not all law is for all occasions. He was telling common people not to enact vigilante justice. We are not unbiased enough and WILL be bad judges bringing more harm without end. When we forgive and show grace, God the ultimate just judge will repay us both, and Christ clothes us with righteousness when we have trusted in Him to do just that. He is faithful and just to forgive us. This is another reason why not every law is applicable in every circumstance for all people. We give grace because we have been shown grace.
