I remember scanning the channels and noticed that this movie was about to start. I was 18, and not really into this type of movie. I said well let’s check it out. It didn’t take long, as soon as the old lady said “come back to me” I was hooked. And it was a life changing movie, I started my appreciation for classical music with this film.

This Film absolutely kills me. I couldn't even get through your retrospective on it without sobbing my heart out. Christopher Reeve is just so devastatingly handsome. He has a way of both being the most magnificent and mature Man in the room, while simultaneously being the most Childlike and innocent, too. He had such incredible depth and vibrant warmth in those gentle steely Blue eyes of His, such dazzling charm. Such captivating screen presence. You believed in His love for His exquisite 'Elise McKenna' so acutely. And exquisite She is. Jayne Seymour was more than just a visual beauty, it radiated out of Her like the Sun. The two of them together sharing that indoor picnic was a vision of Heaven on Earth. And I'm off again.... 😢😢😢💔

It is amazing how some movies can find their way into your life like this one for me. A long time childhood friend who I grew up with watching martial arts films and Stallone and Schwarzenegger and other action films of the 80's who I thought was never into these type of films gave me a copy and said that he "liked" it, by that I knew he actually meant he "loved" it. I shrugged off the idea of watching this love story for a while. But sure enough when I saw it it has stuck with me ever since and I too love it. I hate to admit it, but it softens me up with old childhood notions of love that I rarely feel anymore as an adult. I owe my friend for introducing me to this great film. And wonderful music. Glad to see that other men have a similar feeling towards this film. Thanks for sharing and being honest to your reaction on this Oliver. Cheers on your review.

Theres a stigma about guys liking that much a love story. It is taken as a sign they are into boys. Witch is actually not far from reality but what's wrong with that? Nothing. But the stigma comes from that fear I guess. Is understandable, possible yet not a rule.

I am so glad to have come across this comment sir. I will share with you a bit of my story. I grew up watching this movie over and over and I do believe that I have experienced more in life because of it. I grew up too compete in strong man competition's, I fought in MMA matches and competed professionally in Jiu Jitsu competition eventually winning a bronze medal at the world championship tournament. That being said I recently showed somewhere in time to my lovely wife and I took out the equivalent of an entire box of tissues. What I meant when I said I have experienced more because of it is that it touched my heart, mind and imagination in such a deep way that I know it expanded my heart to see more. God bless you sir.

I have commented on this film several times. And the more I go back to snippets of the film the more I get to realise from comments is that the more people as a nation watch the popular this film becomes to the extent. Well basically if everyone in England watched it 95% of the country would be talking about it It's 42 years ago this was made and still people are talking about it Incredible. Love it.

This film moved and devastated me at the same time. The richness of the story, the realism of the characters and the agelessness of the characters' struggle to fulfill their longing to be together and the music being as present as a character in it's own right has elevated this film from being a "corny love story" into something more - a truly great film.

Thank you Oliver. Watched this for the first time today and absolutely loved it. Reminds me of the feeling you get waking up after dreaming of someone you've lost (in love or in life) and realising that they are really gone. The score is simply immense. I'm away to cry some more...

Best movie ever! I get goosebumps every time I see it or even a clip from it. I ponder the question; who saw who 1st? When she approached him, she already knew him, but he didn't' know her. He only pursued her after that 1st meeting. It's a love story with unanswered questions.

Somewhere In Time is my all time favorite Romance film --I never knew about this until it was recommended by a clerk at a Video Store in the early 1980's --I sat through it , cried , wept and became "hooked" , I've owned 3 VHS versions , wore them out , had the score on cassette and now DVD & CD --It's a wonderful enlightening and very romantic

I had the same reaction the first time I watched it. Cried, not knowing exactly why, but knowing in my heart that we all would like to go back in time to meet someone we've fallen in love with. He got to do it, all be it, for just a short time, but that time is worth everything. He died because he couldn't live without her. And we find that very sad!

I watched this when I was only about 10. My Dad told me Chris Reeves was in it so of course being obsessed with Superman, I had to watch it. I had no interest in girls at the time whatsoever but boy did it make my heart ache with pain and sadness. The music is just amazing and extremely emotionally powerful. Jane Seymour had to be the most beautiful woman on earth back then. She also appeared briefly in the Battlestar Galactica TV series as Serena who married Apollo. As a kid, my heart was crushed yet again when she was killed in the first part of the TV series leaving her son Boxy and Apollo. If I could ever rewrite the parameters of my world, Elise Mckenna would be my bride for life and I'd be everything she would want from a Richard Collier.

Too true Bob! I am very happily married, but there is someone who I met some time ago whom I think about a lot, but, would never approach or indeed intrude on her life. I did say to her though, "If I were single, in another life, I would not have hesitated in asking for her hand in marriage". She was flattered...... I left it at that. That was over a year ago...She is still single.

The film was given a Blu-Ray release last year in the U.S. I've never seen the film, but your retrospective just soaks in the beauty and elegance this film likely has. I will always hold Chris Reeve in the highest regard, and I don't think he ever truly got the recognition for his acting talents that he should have.
@kryskarvader8853
@kryskarvader8853 5 жыл бұрын
Probably. But if he had done a bit more of mainstream movies eventually he would get it. He wasnt into it but the path to more recognition in this business IS balancing mainstream with something that may or not atract many viewers. Look at tom hanks: stuck in comedy in the early ages. Was able to make the transaction because he stuck long enough. Also matthew macconaughey. He was an action romantic good looking sexy muscled blond actor who latter morph into other characters. Had he left what he was most cast for in the early years and probably he wouldn't gone so far. But the industry works differently with men. Woman are not so lucky. We're is Meg Ryan today? All it took was rummours of her infidelity to be cast away. Men can be unfaithful, criminals, rapists even paedophiles (unfortunately). It has been so in Hollywood sense or even before Marilyn Monroe (got there trough the sofa and was reaching 30 trying desperately to be cast in something else than the dumb blound) and Errol Flynn (google this one specially his activities in his house).

One of those rare films which gets better and better with age and repeat viewings, I’m glad it’s brought together so many people from all walks of life. The music is timeless, haunting, beautiful, soothing and heart-breaking. The performances from Christopher and Jane are open and inviting, with no hint of sarcasm, wall-breaking jokes, knowing nods and winks, it’s just pure art and escapism.

Thank you very much for your extensive and well documented review. I watched this movie when I was very young in my native Mexico. At that time I know little of Christopher Reeves or Jane Seymour (although I remember falling in love with her incredible beauty en elegance). I saw this movie in theater on one of my first real dates in my first semester of college. I never knew it wasn't a hit! I agree -- this is a very powerful movie. Back in the 80's, I heard second-hand that some of the most ardent feminists of the time said that if any man were to love them like Christopher Reeve loved Jane Seymour in this movie, they would totally give up feminism in a heart-beat.

This beautiful film reflects what happens when the mix is perfect. Casting, location, camera work, music and the haunting storyline - it will certainly live on and capture the hearts and minds of many generations to come. The original novel Bid Time Return I highly recommend. This original story is deeper and darker than the film and well worth a read. It is not only a story of love and time travel but of deceit and betrayal as Richard Collier never reveals who he exactly is and Robinson the manager is actually the one trying to protect Elise even though he’s not sure exactly what exact threat RC poses but it will change the rest of her life forever.
