Hi Jonny, I'm kinda scratching my head. When you say harmonizing the notes of a scale with a chord, I'm totally confused. Is this a universal formula? Do I need to memorize it? Could you make a video explaining it in a more simpler fashion. Thanks!!

I'm not Jonny but I can help A little bit of Context Harmonizing a note is giving a specific note a different feel because notes in a melody alone can't really give you the feel of it I don't mean you can't but it's just that nobody really does it because it sounds boring Harmonizing a note doesn't need to be a chord it can be a single note with the melody but it's more common to harmonize a note with chords especially in Jazz. There's not a specific formula for Harmonizing but if you know theory(which I hope you know because I assume you do) you have the free will to use any chord I will give a simple example to harmonize a C note you have a lot of options for example a D minor chord because C is the minor 7th of a D minor chord it will give you a chill/sad feel or you can use an A minor chord because C is the minor 3rd of A minor so it will give another feel use your ear to know what to use and just try and experiment try all the chords you think work over a note try chords that you don't think work try to stack notes and make chords that doesn't make sense experiment that's the beauty of music you're free but don't get carried away with chords try to listen how chords relate to each other don't just use anything always use you ear if something works and sounds good to you but in Theory it doesn't work then F*ck theory I hope this helps you I didn't learn this shit the easy way

There is a formula in PWJ members, Jonny just made an entire course of Blocked Chords, Quartile Voicing and Drop 2's. On that course you will play a harmonized scale in all 12 major keys, 12 minor keys and 12 dominant7 keys. I am here because I have already taken the courses and I wanted to see these voicings in application.

Thank you so much Johnny. This really encourages me and makes me want to practise and explore. And what a beauuuuutiful song this is! You are a great pianist, and I know you wouldn't embarrass yourself playing alongside the likes of the lovely Aimee Nolte and Luca and the gorgeous Diana Kraull . What a party that would be!!!!

I like your lessons very much, but why do you choose the key E flat major , which is very hard to sing and play in? I would say impossible. Why not just use C major?
@TheódórHelgiKristinsson5 жыл бұрын
Because C major doesn't sound as cool!
@abdulalshibly39305 жыл бұрын
There's not such a thing as a too hard to sing over major scale all major scales have the same formula if you can sing over C major scale then you can sing over Eb Major scale with a little bit of practice why he played it in Eb major I don't really know(I hope you don't see this insulting I'm not a singer by the way but come on I never heard a singer saying that a scale is hard to sing over)

E flat was actually sang by Tony Bennett.

Ask Stevie Wonder.....(Superstition) E flat..All black keys gives you a 5 note pentatonic "cool scale" that many choose in practice as a way to get the thinking out of funky improvisation ....it encourages syncopation and allows for safe flawless 5 note choices....

@@abdulalshibly3930 Sorry, but there IS such a thing as a song being too hard to sing in a particular key for a particular person. You're theory is correct, and your assertion that one can learn to PLAY any song in any key (with practice) is also correct. However, are you truly unaware of the fact that every single person on the planet has a different vocal range and therefore any decent singer will sing a song in the key that sounds the best for their individual range? For a perfect example, while Yuliana may have trouble singing in Eb, it's one of the best keys for me to sing in. And I have no problem playing in that key, either. And by the way, certain songs are written in certain keys because they sound better in one key than another, i.e., the arrangement of the song may sound too tinny or too dark if written in a key too high or low, respectively.

Hello, in C minor block chords why do you use A instead of A flat? Does it mean that for A minor I should use a F sharp instead of an F for the six grade ?. Thanks
