That footage can also be seen in Peter Jackson's documentary. Cleaned up, speed adjusted and colourized by computers. It's simply astonishing. The apprehension on their faces is quite apparent, and for good reason. Imagine leaving that scant safety and walking to your own execution just a few hundred feet away. Yet they still did it, and for that they have my eternal respect. They deserved so much better. God bless their memory.

My adoptive mother’s father (we called him grandad anyway) lost two cousins who were brothers on the Somme and a brother at Passchendael. Can anyone imagine the horror of anticipating what’s going to happen to you if you’re in a second and subsequent waves on seeing the masses of corpse and horribly mutilated dead and dying. Thank you for your excellent and informative post.

Was in Sunken lane yesterday 28/07/2019 visited for the first time, I have not met one person yet who has ever told me why the Hawthorn ridge crater was exploded at 0720.. Perhaps we will never know, but what we do know is those men went to their deaths that morning and were massacred by withering machine gun fire. Just another disaster on that morning to go with all the rest.

In case you are interested. The firing of the Hawthorn mine was a compromise between the Corps commander of the divisions assaulting Beaumont Hamel ,Hunter Weston, and Rawlinson the 4th army commander. Hunter Weston actually wanted it blown hours earlier, but Rawlinson said 7.20 was the earliest he would allow and Hunter Weston accepted. 7.20 it was.

Thanks! I'm planning on making a series on the battle of the Somme. I recently bought some books and that combined with the internet, I was able to find much more information on July 1, 1916.

Hello, I used the unit war diary which I found on Invisionzone1914-1918. You can find the link to it underneath the video, but I'll insert the link here as well: 1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/topic/151439-sunken-lane/ I have also updated my script to a more detailed degree, so there will be a new version coming up when I'm done filming at the site with a better camera. I hope to do this this year, but I can't promise anything.

The footage was from a very brief visit to the Sunken lane, it was one of my first WW1 videos and I was just starting to learn how to make videos. Usually I make the scripts beforehand to then go out and shoot the footage, but this was a bit of a surprise visit, so I wasn't prepared at all. I'm planing to remake this video and add a few more 1 July 1916 videos with much more footage.
