Real talk late night TV host Amber Ruffin did a bit on bonnets giving the history of hair bonnets and black women. Black women should not be ashamed of wearing hair bonnets they were originally worn by our ancestors and they were proud to do so. I’m not going to look down on someone wearing a hair bonnet because they want to help keep their hair in check. Looking down upon someone because they cover their hair, a certain way is wrong. What’s wrong with a hair bonnet why is someone wearing a hair bonnet looked upon in a negative fashion? I’ll tell you why. It’s because black women wear hair bonnets that’s why it looked upon negatively. You can’t find a reason that it’s negative to wear a hair bonnet, but it looked upon negatively just because it’s something that black women wore back in the day. Society as a whole looked down upon them just because they wore hair bonnets. Now you find us looking down on black women who wear hair bonnets I don’t because my ancestors did anything they can do with a smile on their face. You should be able to do with a smile on yours today.
