"Our mother peacefully past away at 3:18 am, August 1, 2009 of cardio respiratory arrest. She would have wanted us to thank each and everyone of you for all the prayers and your continued love and support. It was her wish for all of us to pray for one another and for our country."

STORYLINE:
Former Philippines President Corazon Aquino, who swept away a dictator and then sustained democracy by fighting off seven coup attempts in six years, died on Saturday, her son said. She was 76-years-old.
Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, said his mother died at 3:18 am on Saturday August 1st (1918 GMT on Friday, 31 July).
He said she passed away peacefully after cardio respiratory arrest.
"She would have wanted us to thank each and everyone of you for all the prayers and continued love and support. It was her wish for all of us to pray for one another and for our country," he told reporters from outside the hospital.
Aquino was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer last year and confined to a Manila hospital for more than a month.
Her son said the cancer had spread to other organs and she was too weak to continue her chemotherapy.
The uprising she led in 1986 ended the repressive 20-year regime of Ferdinand Marcos and inspired nonviolent protests across the globe, including those that ended Communist rule in eastern Europe.
Despite, struggling in office to meet high public expectations, Aquino remained beloved in the Philippines, where she was affectionately referred to as "Tita (Auntie) Cory."
