In 1964 Dusty Springfield embarked on a tour of South Africa. Unlike a lot of other artists who went there, she put a clause in her contract that stipulated she would only play to non-segregated audiences. She and her band had just two shows under their belts when their passports were seized at a hotel in Capetown. For three days they weren't allowed access to phones and questioned by authorities who eventually told them they could only finish the tour if they respected apartheid regulations. Dusty refused and was forced out of the country. She donated all the money she made to Black South African charities. This was nearly 20 years before the anti-apartheid cause became trendy among celebrities.

She was a pioneer in music as well as in human rights! She refused to sing in front of segregated audiences which resulted in her being escorted from South Africa and having her visa revoked. Dusty is the white queen of soul! In the 60s there was the Beatles and Dusty. No one was bigger than them. She was also closeted because coming out would mean her career is over... which is what ended up happening when she came out in 1970 😔

I never heard anything about her 'coming out'. Is that why she isn't more renowned?
@sofia01ht3 жыл бұрын
@@martyemmons1859 yes exactly, she actually flee the UK to California to escape the press cause they started to get really brutal with her and she always felt ashamed of who she was, so to have questions about her sexuality being asked in every interview was traumatizing for her, plus at that time homosexuality was not accepted in show business... regular people could do whatever; however, sadly artists did not have that freedom and Dusty definitely suffered the consequences. Then, when she was already living in the US she came out in an interview in 1970 and literally after that, just like many other artists, she lost her career very quickly, which is surprising knowing how freaking BIG she was just a year prior.
@martyemmons18593 жыл бұрын
@@sofia01ht, I'm not surprised at all. I've heard how women from other nations get treated here. I watched Miriam Makeba tell her story of career sabotage. She was very popular until she married Stokely Carmichael. That's when ALL her concert dates mysteriously got cancelled. What is it about beauty that the music industry wants hurt/crush!?!
@sofia01ht3 жыл бұрын
@@martyemmons1859 that is so true. This just gave me chills because it's always the ones with the biggest hearts who get hurt and get taken advantage of, and these women, and many more, were very strong and empowered yet were still not treated with the respect they deserved and got their careers crushed. Dusty for example, she chose all her songs and produced them as well. She even told her musicians what to play on their instruments, she was that good; however, that "perfectionism" or, empowerment gave her a reputation of being "Difficult to work with". Now I wonder, when men demand the same things they get praised for being "Driven". The music industry is awful and I think it's getting worse as the years go by.

The 'Dusty in Memphis' album is one of my all-time favorites. This is probably her most well-known song, but she had so many great ones. I also really liked her career resurgence in the '80s with the Pet Shop Boys. She had a cameo in their music video for 'What Have I Done To Deserve This?' music video from 1987. That might be worth a reaction if you are interested in 80's pop.

Not many people know that this song was written with the great Aretha Franklin in mind, but for whatever reason she rejected it, and then it was offered to Dusty Springfield. Although this song is surely her biggest hit, Dusty was already an established artist in America being at the forefront of the British Invation in the mid-60's.
