I think despite how much of a killer Askeladd was, he was the first person who tried to teach Thorfinn to move away from anger. You can see this when Thorfinn fights Askeladd before he confronts the king and you know... He tries to get it across that Thorfinn needs to let go and move on. Askeladd respected Thors greatly as well. You gotta respect a man whos willing to take the fall for other people.

I don't think Askeladd was a bad person. Yes he was a very cunning person but he changed slightly after meeting Thors and realized what a "True Warrior" is. He would have easily killed Thorfinn anytime but he knew that Thors sacrificed his life to save him, so instead of killing him, he tried teaching to teach him the ideals of his father indirectly. Askeladd last words were "Be a true warrior... son of Thors". Even after his death he continues to teach Thorfinn to climb his way up and become a "TRUE WARRIOR"
