Being a granddaughter of Genocide survivors, and visiting this place was an inexplicably moving experience. I was sickened and overcome with grief and sadness that I cannot to this day communicate. Growing up as an Armenian, this is something we all cary with us all the time, but when you set foot on this memorial site it's like being transported back to that time for a moment. We all need to visit this memorial. It is a rite of passage and an honoring of our people. Children of the diaspora returning to Armenia and actually setting foot on the soil, bringing our spirits back home and bringing the spirits of our slain with us to find some peace in that eternal flame of remembrance. This is what separates Conan from the rest of the comedian hosts on TV. That's not to say that hosts don't take time to comment or acknowledge certain issues, because they do and they all share that knowledge of 'when the time calls for it' in terms of seriousness. But I have yet to see another host interact with their staff in this way, and take the time and learn about the culture behind one of their staff members, and go so far as to fly out of the country with them, to educate an audience, bridge generational gaps, and spread awareness. Conan's team does that constantly. My favorite Conan moments aren't even his interviews...they're when he has animals on his show, when he visits his staff, when he riffs with Jordan, an when he goes out of his way to do stuff like THIS. I think he deserves a lot more attention than he gets, honestly.

Sons of an Armenian family who lives close by and are good friends mine have told me their family stories several times about this tragedy and the aftermath. Even many years after the genocide the father was beaten almost to death because he was not a muslim and one of the boys, who was 8 at the time, was forced to watch or he would get a beating too. It's one of the many stories before they fled the country. What amazes me the most is how their family is still full of love, after listening to all those stories I would expect them to be cold hearted and filled with hatred. I know one family doesn't portray an entire society but their love is enough to create an Armenian soft spot in me.

It teaches children about the horrifying things that happened there in WW2. It is not "understandable" to simply deny something that horrific, that means so much to a next-door neighbour. That's a weird way to rationalise Turkey's behaviour. Almost as if Armenia is more in the wrong than Turkey, which displaced or killed a _million and a half_ Armenians. There are so many prominent Turks and Turkish immigrants who still, to this day, deny that the Armenian genocide happened - you hand them excuses with your slippery argument.

Denying the term genocide that's all, because 500,000 Muslims were also killed by people like the Russian supported armenian rebels. That's why you will get a very defensive stance from modern day turks because they lost millions fighting to regain their country, including civilians too. World War 1 was a dark turn in history. Plus it was generals of the Ottoman Empire that committed them from 1915 to 1921 whereas the Turkish republic was founded in 1923 where they trialed some of the generals responsible for the ethnic cleansing.

Right, the Neo-Turks had nothing to do with it. They only wanted an ethnically pure Turkish state, comprising of muslim Turks, that's all. That's why they massacred Pontic Greeks, Syrians and Yazidis as well, because they were helping the Russians. Also that is why nowadays, about 150k Muslims of turkish origin live in northern Greece, whereas the Greeks in Turkey are below 6k, because the Turkish state is so kind towards ethnic minorities and they flourish. That's why the Turks elected Erdogan, to have a leader who supports their totally non-nationalistic extremist views. It's not like such open-minded people would reject their nation's historical facts. *sarcasm*

Kudos to you for assuming I'm white, even though you can't possibly know that. Also, Turks are white too strictly speaking since they are not of the black or yellow race. There are also syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, and places like Greece, Italy and Germany, your point? Turkey simply wants to extend its territory and extinguish the kurdish strongholds in northern Syria. Countries who suffered a genocide from the Turks are not in any way responsible for what the British and western Europeans did in America, Africa or Australia because at that time they were ENSLAVED by the Turks themselves. In fact the first country which recognised the Greek revolution against the Ottomans when all of Europe condemned it, was the nation of Haiti. Stop bringing the race card to everything and don't use a moral scale. What the Europeans did shouldn't justify any behaviour from other peoples.

Problem was, it wasn't based on the facts. For example, 1.5 million Armenians could not have been killed, because that was the total pre-war population, according to what everyone agreed upon at the time. U.S. Senate Resolution, Nov. 10, 1919: *1,293,000* Armenians alive and accounted for. Perform the subtraction. Most importantly, there is *no evidence* for an "Armenian genocide. On the other hand, there is *plenty* of reliable evidence that it was the Armenians who had conducted the *factual extermination campaign,* when they did away with *529,000* Turks, Muslims, and Jews. (See the 1919 report of two investigating Americans, Niles and Sutherland: louisville.edu/a-s/history/turks/Niles_and_Sutherland.pdf) Matias Page would have done well to crack open some *objective* works instead of exposing his ignorance, and deep prejudice. .

A very close buddy of mine told me about how Turks react to the Armenian genocide by the Ottoman Empire. He being a graduate student at that time shared the same office with a Turkish student along with others. One day, he asked the Turkish student about it. His reaction was: "It is a complete lie and fabrication by Armenians." Other Turkish students showed the similar reactions. The reason why Turks believe that there was no such a thing as the Armenian genocide by the Ottoman Empire is because they are taught so at school. Meanwhile in Asia, the postwar Japanese governments have been doing the same to deny and cover up what the Japanese Empire had done to tens of millions of people all over Asia and the Pacific from 1910's to 1945. What Japanese are taught at school about their wars, invasions and atrocities in Asia and the Pacific is completely distorted with denials and coverups. Such systemetic denials and coverups by the aggressors are like burying ticking bombs and will bring bloody incidents again by either the aggressors or the victims. The US governments have been closing their eyes towards the denials and coverups by the aggressors like Turkey and Japan simply because they are with the US and important to benefits of the US.

Also, we are very multicultural so any teacher trying to preach anything racist basically gets called out by students themselves. p.s. everyone thinks we are racist in Australia but the only racists are the people from Cronulla (search: Cronulla riots) and our stupid ass government who won't let people who are in legitimate danger into our country, and then let them burn themselves in protest at detention centres (search: Nauru detention centre protests).

I'm Turkish, and I would love to assure you that in Turkish education system they don't say there is no genocide. When the topic comes there, we argue about it. As far as I remember, in high school someone got school project to search about it. Teacher doesn't say it's a complete lie or something like that. If they create a hatred against a specific nation, they're going to be sued about it. On the other side from the very early age, Armenians people filled with hatred against Turks. You can ask any Armenian you know. There are a Armenian community in Turkey and I do remember one of them were saying in Armenia just because of political reasons hate against Turks are very popular and it's supported by government. Many Turks accept the tragedy but genocide is a big word, and some countries wants to use it against Turkey. First of all, 1.5 million is really huge number. If that much people were executed, there must be few Armenians today. Many photos you have seen on internet about the so-called genocide are fake. Many stories are made-up, there is no proof. Desert thing is a huge lie, because the whole Syria is not a desert and no one keep them in a desert. They might have passed a desert or whatever. Relocation is not a good thing but trust me killing innocent people is also not good thing. Armenian people killed innocent Anatolian people just because of the sake of creating a country called Armenia. They couldn't accomplish what they want at that time, so they come up with the idea called Armenian genocide.

They basically wanted to construct a new nation, based on their 'values' of what was right. A morality of a Western Catholic Culture, as they used to call it. 100% agree, im latino! my armenian brothers have helped me succeed and build wealth for my family from their network. Ill always be loyal to my armenian brothers, they saw me in poverty and took me out. They saw i was honest and hard working. I got to spend time in my bosses home, i ate home cooked armenian meals. Armenians would offer me the piece of lavash from their hands before they would eat it. Now i do the same with my family! 🇦🇲🇲🇽

All Armenians in USA seem to be always involved with drug selling. Specially in LA it's all cocaine.

@@pauldenino2560 All of them? Or the few that you choose to mention? I'm a limo driver and far from what your ignorance promotes. I think you should be a cop in Glendale, you can harass Armenians and enjoy your over inflated paycheck

@@pauldenino2560 that's idiotic propaganda of you, sheep. There are a lot of Armenian professors, architects, medics... Over the whole USA.

you were high man, if you thought that :S you should smoke more marihuana, so you integrate some of your ancient memories that will make you more inteligent and sensitive to others people tragic moments, and in the meanwhile you will have a lot of fun, hangry and sleepy thoughts, that will make you yawning ;)

Chill with that dude. Not everyone needs a hug, and Sona's been working for Conan for a while so that's the person that gets the benefit of the doubt. He's probably put more attention to Armenia and it's tragedy than even the Kardashians, so I'm not going to start picking at petty details.
@jbmp13908 жыл бұрын
+shindean Exactly. Thank you for saying that. It's wonderful that he gave acknowledgement to this on national television because not enough people in our country know about this horrible tragedy. Obama wouldn't even use the word genocide even though that's what it was. And to this day Turkey still shows how terrible they are as a nation by trying to pretend it never even happened. Someday they'll get their just desserts. Much respect for Conan for putting some actual serious attention on this. And like you said, he and Sona have known each other for a long time now and I'm sure they know each other very well. I'm sure he knew whether it was a time to give her a hug or not. When it comes to stuff like this, a hug is often not what you need, you just need to be there and reflect and it's okay to be sad because it's a sad thing. You can't just fix everything with a hug. And I'm sure he gave her a hug at some point, probably just not on camera. +B5D Stupid to nitpick details like that, especially by someone who wasn't even there.
