R.I.P. Beth Howland. The only person to do this number at Sondheim's original tempo.

@@kyjuan89 Jayma didn't sing at the tempo presented in the show. They sped hers up in production afterward.

this is one of the most difficult numbers Sondheim wrote. Howland is one of the very few to do it at his preferred tempo. Its so hard to figure out where to take a breath, and how to sustain the volume and get the punch lines enunciated. Once again Sondheim picks a comedic actress over a conventional singer in his casting and reaps gold for a reward. Howland can barely hold a note by Broadway standards, and absolutely nobody in the audience cares. They are getting what they want out of this character and performance.

Great comment. One of the best. I didn’t even notice she cant sing so you are right. She is so sweet and beautiful and captivating that I cant help but love her performance

I remember as a young teenager listening to the famous soundtrack LP album of “Company” on the family hi-fi and being so impressed by the brilliance, irony and humor of this piece of music and its performance. Even without seeing anything that was being performed on stage I felt like I understood every joke that was built into the song. This and “Another Hundred People.” Just brilliant!

It's a shame most people only knew Beth Howland as 'Vera' on "Alice." Such a talented performer.

You can really hear and feel the anxiety in this version...makes you hold onto so much tension in your muscles by the end if you're listening well enough!

There's a ridiculously well filmed Sweeney Todd bootleg on KZbin of the original 1979 production with Len Cariou. It's nuts how someone managed to film that in such high quality before the official 1982 recording with George Hearn
