Miss B, for the next challenge - I feel for you and people like you, many of us have first held an instrument. I'd be glad if you continue the music theory for ukulele. It'd be very very helpful. Another suggestion would be that some of us struggle with / to know how to graduate from Beginner to Intermediate exactly, I'd love if your next series targets that. Thank you!

Hi Nandini, what are you currently playing? Do you feel like an intermediate player or like a beginner? Do you feel confused as where to start to take the next step?

@@TenThumbsProductions Hello! I've been playing for nearly a year and can transition well between chords and strumming patterns. The E7 on the lyric "sun" sounds so weird/off to me. "House of the Rising Sun" is one of the first songs I learned on guitar. That chord was always an E, not an E7. Why is it an E7 on uke? The chord progression I know and that most guitarists play is: Am C D F Am C E Am C D F Am E Am E It sounds unresolved to me with an E7 at the end, like every verse ends on a turnaround. Is it just me? It's not too bad going from E to E7 on "sun," because the verse continues. (Although, it still seems superfluous.) But, to my ear, playing E7 on the lyric "one" sounds wrong/unresolved. As an absolute beginner on uke, again, I have to ask why is it an E7 and not an E (like on guitar)? Thank you in advance to any and all who reply.
@TenThumbsProductions4 жыл бұрын
Hi Geri, I have always played E as well. The reason so many teachers and players use the E7 instead of the E, in my opinion, is becuase it is soo much easier and makes it easier to teach and play. The song is very popular but if taught with an E it makes it much less accessible for beginners. In this key the diatonic chord is Em, so they push the G to a G# to give it a bit of an edge. The difference between the E7 and the E is adding a D note to the chord, so it doesn't interfere with the melody or anything. At the end of the day, if you can play the E, do it that way, because that is what most composition do, it is more powerful that way, but the E7 is just much more beginner friendly. With a song like this as well, that is 400 years according to some accounts, you can almost play it anyway you want, so just choose the one that you like and roll with it.

@@GeriMars My pleasure, it is a very very interesting history and there is a lot of debate over where and when it originated. Whatever you find out please share with me because I would love to hear about it. There are claims it originated in a brothel in New Orleans and others that claim the melody dates as far back as the 1600s to pub songs in Great Britain, from England to Ireland. The main characteristic of the melody is the large leap up, but it terms of harmony it is almost all chord tones, so from a song writing stand point it really is a testament to the power of a large leap up, when used sparingly, it can make a whole song. Thanks in advance for sharing any cool facts! I'm a totally music history/theory nerd, I could talk about harmony for hours!

@@TenThumbsProductions I wish I knew enough about music theory and history to be able to talk about it for hours. Also, I'd love to be able to notate/arrange/compose the music I hear in my head as easily as I write words. (I'm working on it.) I will gladly share with you whatever I find on the song and anything relating to it. 😊

@@GeriMars I have been thinking about doing song melody analysis on my channel. I just really really love it. Everything from basic melodies that use only chord tones like "Mad World" to really colorful melodies that weave in and out of dissonance like Yesterday. It is just really cool stuff. Are you familiar with what an interval is and how to describe a melody in intervals? If not, that is a great place to start. Intervals are the building blocks of chords and scales, and if you can take a melody and write it out as intervals, identify the phrases in that song and see how they harmonize the resolution you are in a great place.
