Always remember: If there's a great song that has a bad feature or vice-versa, there'll always be a KZbin video with 500+ views that has the bad part removed. (MotorSport, Shells ft. Lil Uzi, etc.)

I can’t believe no one hasn’t mentioned the “self feature” on Trilogy. On Thursday, the second tape, there’s Lonely Star and The Birds Pt. 2, both of which feature a female character called Valerie. (She gets the bonus track named after her, too.) Valerie is just The Weeknd with a voice changer, but, in my opinion, it really is convincing enough to feel like an extra feature on the mixtape besides Drake of all people. “She” only narrates on Lonely Star, but she sings the chorus on TBP2. (The latter track also begins with her crying.)
@onlysmallbites
@onlysmallbites 2 жыл бұрын
Oh snap, I actually didn't know that, I legit thought that was someone else. Should've known considering theres no other vocal credits, haha. Craaazy~ I always loved those additions to the tracks. That's awesome!
@loganosborne5026
@loganosborne5026 2 жыл бұрын
She doesn’t actually sing the chorus on the birds part 2. He sampled a song off a game called Fahrenheit, and then just pitched up the chorus to make it sound higher. It does sound similar to the lonely star voice but it’s not actually the “girl” singing. It’s a sampled song from Fahrenheit called sandpaper kisses.

Truly legendary posse cut I'm surprised wasn't mentioned: Danny Brown's "Really Doe." Danny sets the tone with his opening verse, then being complemented with Kendrick Lamar on the hook and bridge, and Ab-Soul & Earl Sweatshirt's verses. Their voices' different timbres just fit together perfectly.

I think features can be really powerful in making us reconsider our opinions on artists we may have written off. We'll wanna keep listening to the song even if we're not 100% on the feature at first because we wanna hear the main artist. I had this with the Rico Nasty feature on Ain't No Way from the latest Denzel Curry record, didn't like her part at first but now I enjoy it as much as the rest.

4:50 It’s interesting that you bring this up; because I distinctly remember a problem with older mp3’s was that any song featuring an artist, would create a new artist… example: one song creating a new artist category. Tyler the Creator ft. Kali Uchis (this is now a singular artist according to my iPod).

All Drake features on Abel's songs are amazing, and I really loved the work he did with Future too. Also glad you mentioned Kanye's "Monster" and "So Appalled", but I think Jay's verse on Monster was actually pretty good, though his is technically the weakest when compared to Nicki and Kanye's verses. His work on So Appalled was crazy though

As a french rap lover, my feats will not be interesting to many but "Spécial" by Laylow ft. Fousheé & Nekfeu is my clear favorite and the worse? I don't remer the name of the track but Tony parker (basketter) inviting Booba (old "goat" of the 2000s..) only made them free punchlines for anyone else even now. And btw, love your stuff

ideally a feature shouldn't outclass the main artist but they should add something to the song. still, my favourite "outclasses main artist" example is Lil Wayne on Drake's "You Only Live Twice". I've looped snippets that are just his verse more times than I've heard anything else off that last record

One of my favorite things Mac Miller ever did, was feature on his own side projects a lot. My Grandfather Used to Carry a Flask from Delusional Thomas is the absolute best example of this, but he also did it on the closing song of run on sentences volume 1. Which is a bit funnier, because he begins it with "Damn Larry Fisherman, you really did something here" which is just fully complimenting himself before hopping in to close the beat tape.

When it comes to features in Hip Hop Donda & Astroworld are absolute treasure troves. Almost all of the features on these records fit perfectly into the songs and their feature doesn‘t feel distinct, but like a natural part of the record. Which imho is the best type of feature. I also really really love Jay-Z‘s feature on Mr. Carter. Besides matching the songs energy perfectly, he is also a Mr. Carter, just like Wayne. Love meta stuff like that. And lastly to name something outside of the Hip Hop realm, the new Kavinsky Album. Idk any of the features from that Album but I know none of the songs would be as fucking amazing as they are (seriously guys go check it out. 10/10 Album idk how it doesn‘t have millions of streams), without these talented vocalists. I guess thats also a type of feature. Totally obscure, yet incredibly talented features.

My favorite kind of feature is the instrumental feature (dunno if that's the actual name), where an artist already known for their instrumental work does/contributes to the instrumental for another artist's song. I don't know where this first started popping up, the only example I know off the top of my head is when Mick Gordon (who did the OSTs for DOOM2016 and DOOM Eternal) worked with Motionless In White for the song Scoring The End Of The World

An example is the Travis Scott and Ed Sheeran collaboration for Antisocial. It’s such a good song 🎶

I always thought that the title of a song should stand by itself, I think it looks really weird and sometimes it’s just dumb like for example: Songtitle (feat. Artist) [feat. Artist]

i wonder if anyone made a “ego feature” (literally just made that up😭) something like Nicki Minaj Ft Roman or Kendrick Lamar ft Kung fu Kenny … yk ?😭 basically an artist featuring they’re alter ego

Actually yeah! Rapper MF DOOM goes by a ton of aliases Victor Vaughn, King Geedorah to name a few. My fav is on his collab record Madvillany on the song “Fancy Clown” where it’s basically a diss song from Victor Vaughn to MF DOOM about DOOM stealing his girl. Pretty fun stuff.

I’m gonna get flamed (for some reason), but PARTYNEXTDOOR on the beginning of Ghost Town is so mind numbing. Legit makes me mad he’s on such a perfect track. His mumbling just sounds so sloppy and not in a charming way

That reminds me, almost every track on Ye's Donda has a feature (some tracks don't even have himself singing/rapping)

I think my favourite example of a non-rapper featuring on a rap song is John Darnielle on Aesop rock’s coffee. It feels like it absolutely should not work but it does
