The way i understand it,this song is about domestic violence, parental abuse or a parent missing, like James' father. That is what makes it great,it talks about a very serious, sensitive matter, like The Day That Never Comes.

Yes, there’s a bunch of songs he wrote about relations with parents. Besides Day, it’s also Dyers eve, God that failed, Until it sleeps. We can make a whole album with those

What makes Fixxxer amazing is its simplistic brilliance. Simple riffs, moving grooves, leaving space for arrangement and studio tricks like gloomy wah-wah weirdness intro and layered guitars in hooks. But most importantly, its musical simplicity leaves so much space for emotional density which is used up masterfully by Папаша. My god, i'm forever grateful torwards James and the guys for forging such an amazing and mature outlet for all the emotion built-up in me and many others. It speaks of the end, of coming away unvictorious, abandoning many hopes and dreams yet maintaining the sence of self-worth, saying "i won't let this hurt me no more, no more pins in me". Such a great bittersweet note to close off such an underrated (honestly load/reload may be my favourite albums of all time) intimate and introspected era in Metallica's music. Though there's a place for every instrument to shine, Het is the star of this show P. S. I also love how it's sister song The Outlaw Torn ends with a fade-out, almost saying "it's a stop, but the end to this journey is not put yet", and Fixxxer closes with the whole band hitting the root note, you could say, JABBING A PIN to finish this story. Once again, amazing song

My personal experience with "Fixxxer" was that the melodyes and the lyrics get me so hard. Specially the lyrics I feel so identified with them and for me that song is very nostalgic, I remember hearing it for the first times and always even until this day I still having goosebumps. I would have loved that they played it in the 90s but didint know that was so hard for James.

As a non native English speaker, I enjoyed the vocal melodies and delivery, and didn’t pay attention to the lyrics. But as I read them, man, that’s deep and touching

I love this song. I first discovered it back when I was first getting into Metallica when someone ranked this as one of their favorites by the band. To me this song has an atmosphere that you can't get out of any other song. The reverse guitars, the weird screechy noises, all of the effects in general that are layered on everything, the amazing chorus, the lyrics about child abuse that cut deep, the fact that it has a very simple yet killer groove to it, the fact that it's an 8 minute song that whenever I listen to it, it feels like 3. It's one of my favorites, easily. What I also think is really cool is that... I legit can't think of any other band aside from Load/Reload-era Metallica that could make a song like this. Metallica have gone on record saying they were listening to a whole bunch of different bands and artists during this time, Alice in Chains is, imo, probably the most obvious with them doing AiC-like vocal harmonies on many songs, but this is a song that I feel like could only come from Metallica from this one moment in time. A song that doesn't sound anything like what people would expect from Metallica... that could've only came from Metallica. I think that's awesome.

This was such a good video! I always assumed it was the vocal line that kept James from wanting to play it, but you're right, he does have other high vocal lines that he pulls off in his older age.

I remember seeing the livestream performance of Fixxxer in real time in 2021. You could hear James' voice cracking in several places, and also trying to catch his breath in-between vocals sections. He was really struggling.

Love 'Fixxxer', certainly one of the better songs on Load/Reload. It may be a bit overproduced, so it sounds like they would need more people on stage to play/sing it live. Opening/Bridge Riff and harmony always reminds me of Jethro Tulls 'Cry you a Song', (not the only Metallica Songs to be inspired by Tull) but it works very well. Lyrics sound like they hurt to write/sing so it makes sense if he doesn't like singing it.

We all knew they were going to do that song. I remember thinking well before they finally got around to it that they should’ve opened that way earlier. We’ve all known the vox were the reason they didn’t attempt it. His voice was way too strained to attempt that late in the set.

Great song. Never hold an artist back because of what they can and can’t play at live shows. Part of being a great artist is to never let anything hold you back from playing/writing songs. I never was a fan of any “music elitist” that would say stuff like “well they’re not good because they can’t play it live”. It’s about the music….not a skill or talent competition.
