The Indian guest sings this at the feast scene in Sadko. There are two other songs that are sung in this scene, and the tradition at the Bolshoi was to have their greatest singers step forward and sing these showstoppers. I believe the first great artist to become widely known for this aria was Sergei Lemeshev, a glorious tenor who lost a lung to TB early in his career yet still had a gorgeous voice. I’m sure you can find a recording of him singing this haunting song on YT.

My dad used to play this on the piano when i was a kid but 8 never knew what it was. As i got older, i would think back on it and wished i knew what it was. Glad i finally found it.

Peter Farrar:- Nikolai Rimsky-Kossakov's unforgettable classical music from the opera Sadko, the beautiful stunning dramatic ballad, "Song Of India." The superb lush strings Dekalb Symphony orchestra was in complete tune with the theme of this beautiful music, & raised this classical music to supreme levels. Golden words paying tribute to a great classical composer, by Peter E. Farrar.

A wonderful performance of the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra that transports us to the magic land of India....curiously, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov composed this overture before visiting India, according to his biography......

oh so this is the name! I heard it before once ( in Fritz Kreisler's recordings) and loved it but didn't know it was literally called "The song of India"

Actually, it's a song by an Indian guest from the opera Sadko. The best performers of this song are opera singers Sergei Lemeshev and Nikolai Gedda.

Who made this arrangement for orchestra? (I believe normally there is a vocal part. There's some version for violin by Kreisler. This version is a little different from the others i've heard, so wondering who arranged it.)

listen to Mario Lanza's rendition; the greatest voice of the 20th century coupled with this hauntingly beautiful tune; a recording for the ages
@danhitt1673 жыл бұрын
@@peterashford7855 Indeed Lanza made a piece of music out of the work. I also suppose that Lanza must have had an arranger, or perhaps arranged it himself, because of the extra chorus that appears. Do you know who arranged Lanza's version? And i do wonder who arranged this one as well.

This is from Sadko, an opera.
@danhitt1673 жыл бұрын
@@millerforester6237 Thanks for your reply, which is of course correct: it is from Sadko. But there are numerous arrangements. For example, as Peter Ashford above noted, Mario Lanza had a beautiful, dramatic interpretation. And as Ольга noted, Gedda and Lemeshev also performed it --- and i believe it was a different arrangement, without the added Hollywood chorus. (But somebody please correct me if i'm wrong.) But who wrote the arrangement that was performed by the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra? When was it written? I'd just like to learn who the arranger was. Thanks in advance for any info.

@@Martive_Led Tragic, but true. It's a shame the great ones have to kill themselves with drugs and booze. It seems to happen all of the time, as if the great artists would rather die than be a part of the world they helped shape.
