This is the first North Korean movie I’ve seen. I have to say I enjoyed it more than I expected, I thought I would just watch a little bit but I ended up watching the whole thing. It’s too bad Komak and Ra Sol Ju couldn’t be together in the end, she was a real heroine though! I’m looking forward to checking out more North Korean movies, thank you so much for the uploads!

Basically, interracial / international marriage is banned in DPRK..................after hte Korean war, DPRL sent college/univ. students to E Europe to learn many things from advanced E European communist bloc nations and some of the students somehow fell in love and married to E European women and brought them into DPRK but later, i guess in the early 60's , DPRK govt ordered all foreigners living in the country to leave so those foreign spouses had to go back to their own countries ,i.e., E Germany, Hungary, Poland Romania so on........ just for reference: casualties of korean war; According to the South Korean Ministry of National Defense, North Korean military losses totaled 294,151 dead, 91,206 missing, and 229,849 wounded, giving North Korea the highest military deaths of any belligerent in both absolute and relative terms.The PRIO Battle Deaths Dataset gave a similar figure for North Korean military deaths of 316,579.Chinese sources reported similar figures for the North Korean military of 290,000 "casualties" and 90,000 captured. The Chinese and North Koreans estimated that about 390,000 soldiers from the United States, 660,000 soldiers from South Korea and 29,000 other UN soldiers were "eliminated" from the battlefield.Western sources estimate the Red China suffered about 400,000 killed and 486,000 wounded, while N.Korea suffered 215,000 killed and 303,000 wounded. Cumings cites a much higher figure of 900,000 fatalities among Chinese soldiers.

I think it's an interesting movie and I hope to watch more films from DPR Korea with subtitles. I liked the depiction of scenes from the Korean War and the focus on young female soldiers with their contributions, as well as the idea of a sympathetic foreigner that was learning about the conflict with a deepening perspective. I think it would have been better to have a more extensive introduction of the characters when the movie jumps into flashback to have a better idea of who they are and where they are coming from. I also liked the use of material from the Youth Festival and thought it added to the film. Throughout the film the interactions could have been richer and had more realism, with a more complex interaction and dialogue around the cultural and ideological exchange that is taking place.

A Person close to me, sent me this movie. At first I was surprised why he sent me this. But now I understand. Sadly we are always full of the prejudice and news that we are watching all the time. From time to time we are forgetting that we are all just humankind and fighting for existence. PS This movie opened some new opinions in my mind. I understand that people better now. In my Homeland was a War too, so I copy with a feeling of the people who lost everything but not empathy, dignity and love for their Motherland. PS Sadly these two people have no chance for love and life together but music left a great legacy for all their lost days, years and decades separated. However, music and feelings make their love Eternal. God blessings to all good people, no matter which background or beliefs they belong to. PS Thanks dear S.O. for sharing such a touching story with me, even though this movie makes me cry it's worth it.

One of the best movie I've seen in the past years. It's a little bit a propaganda movie, but.. I don't know, I think what it expresses it's true, those people were ruled by a single objective, to have their own country, and Kim Ir Sen was their leader. Now, it's true that americans did a lot of bad things to the world, and destroyed a lot of lives, but you can't apply that to every nation, you can't even apply that to the whole korean war. Although it was a very good movie, unfortunately with a sad end.

Why do these movies have to have that one heart melting song? The ending in this one gave it that north korean smiley propaganda billboard face to it.
@thx5896 Жыл бұрын
Kim Jong Il said that "Good songs and music make an immense contribution to the ideological and artistic quality of a film". The ending is very peculiar for a ''sad'' film, since it encourages the future instead of the past. In other NK war films, the main point of the film is to remember the war and ''aggression'' of the US, but in this one the main point is that the central ideology is immortal and trancends the life of people. It is a very carefully made film, with many difficult issues to put into film.
