History of Peronism in a nutshell: 00:00 Peronism slowly emerged during the Argentine dictatorship of 1943, under which the Secretary of Labour subtly started to distribute benefits among workers. 00:24 The man in charge of the Secretary was Juan D. Perón. 00:32 When the dictatorship started to doubt Peron's political intentions, he was sent to prison; but massive workers mobilisations pushed the government to restore democracy, allowing Perón to be elected for president in 1945. 00:41 Perón had a corporatist view of government, trying to gain the direct support of businessmen, even though the true winners were trade unions (mainly the CGT) that, since that moment, became powerful political actors. 0:56 However, the opposition (mainly the UCR and later the military forces) started to see his government as a tyranny, and as a result he was overthrown in 1955. 1:15 The memory he left among many Argentinians was impossible to vanish. Polarisation increased: but the original corporativist ideals quickly embraced marxist points of view. 1:29 Many guerrilla groups began to emerge in Argentina, some of which defended a new variant of leftist Peronism. While Perón was in exile, he supported such groups. 1:39 One of the most important organisations, Montoneros, carried out a guerrilla warfare against Antiperonist governments to bring Perón back. 1:45 But when Perón finally arrived to Argentina in 1973, his movement broke apart. The leftist guerrilla groups did not approve the new right-wing ideals Perón had and that were somehow supported by his original followers: trade unions. 1:54 Of course, despite having had some transitory alliances in the past, the UCR and the military forces continued to oppose Peronist rule. 2:02 In the meantime, Peronism from each side of the political spectrum found themselves in an open battle. 2:16 The result? Absolute chaos: different groups fought against each other, leading to a political and economic crisis that, two years after Perón's death, ended up in Argentina's last military coup.
