An in depth analysis of Tomm Moore's 2014 movie 'Song of the Sea'
CORRECTIONS: I know my pronunciation of Bronagh is all over the place.
Cú means hound not dog.
And the language should be called either Irish or Gaelige not Gaelic.

When saorise was half stone and Ben had to sing their mothers tune to save her i dont think it was exactly hearing her mother’s song that helped her sing. I think it was the validation that Ben truly cared for her after years of being neglected and taunted by him and she was so young and didn’t understand. That’s my favorite scene as well

I recently saw this on cable and was absolutely amazed. I never heard of it before; and the lack of promotion in the US sounds about right. There is something haunting, yet comforting about the Selkie song. I have found myself humming it or the words are lingering in my head. It's a shame that simple things are simply being overlooked. GREAT MOVIE!!!

This film is extremely clever, the more you watch it the more you notice. I have actually studied the film, and can add a few things which are very easy to miss! There is a shape, which is almost hidden throughout the film. It is hard to describe but is like a stick giving off radar pulses. But, there is a gap in the nearest circle/radar to the centre. This could link to Joseph Campbell's a Hero's journey, with the gaps possibly representing the crossing of the threshold. It can also be seen in the holy well scene. When we see down the well, it is surrounded by circles with, guess what, gaps! Secondly, a bit more obvious than the previous one, there is plenty of (like many films) uterine imagery, like when Ben gets pulled down the well, he literally goes trough a uterus shape. This links back to Ben becoming more and more connected to the world of folklore, as if he is being reborn into a new person. Also, the most obvious point I'll make, the characters physically mirror the folklore characters, not just emotionally. Now, I don't mean Granny looking like the Macha, but things like Conor's posture being exactly the same to Mac Lir's shape. The reflection of the folklore world can be seen everywhere, with pylons and cars looking like owls etc. Overall, I think this is one of the most thorough films, in terms of what's hidden in plain sight, as the clever hints that the folklore world is on the rise are right in front of you, but they do take some finding!

On Ben's map we see that they pass by Ben Bulben wich is Sligo.............so them driving from Dublin south to then go all the way north again....... doesn't make any sense :/ but I am probably overanalysing :)

The first time I laid eyes on this movie was on Netflix, and I did not look at it a second time. Maybe because of how simplistic the animation looked. I was at a stage where I thought Disney animation deserves the monopoly it had at least to me. But It would not be till another 2 years that I ran into the trailer on youtube and after looking at it, I decided to watch it somewhere, and I ENJOYED IT. I was floored by this film. The characters, the animation, the story, the production design, It's simplistic but it's its use of emotion that gives it its depth and wonder.

I think it's a shame that this movie isn't known to the wider public. It is an absolute, complete masterpiece, on every level - visual, storytelling, message, symbolism, music, etc, insert anything that comes to your mind. Here is my review of the picture: Ben is fascinated by the eerie, mysterious world of Irish beliefs into which his mum has introduced him. He feels that no one understands him - his dad, grieving the loss of his wife, his younger sister who, despite being six years old, still doesn't speak, his apodictic grandmother who knows what's best for whom. The line between the fantastic world of Celtic mythology and reality is blurred. At a certain point, the viewer asks himself - is this really happening, or is it the imagination of a terribly unhappy, grief-stricken boy? A beautiful story about coming to terms with the most difficult thing in the world - the loss of a loved one, about experiencing grief, dealing with difficult emotions. Which have to be lived through, worked through, otherwise the family will not regain happiness. But don't be discouraged, the film is so beautiful, so painterly, so absorbing, that these difficult issues are discussed as if in passing, only after the screening do we realise what the message of the picture really was. My no. 1 ever! A huge plus for the beautiful, yearning Irish music.

I came to this movie after watching The Breadwinner (another stunning little gem if you ask me) and absolutely fell in love with it. I want to thank this animation studio for sticking to traditional animation and not using CGI. i love this movie to death and i'm so glad to see someone make a video essay on it. i remember seeing this film like yesterday. i was 11 years old and my aunt volunteered at this movie theater that typically played indie films or cult classics. she told me about these two animated films that would be playing there soon: the tale of princess kaguya and song of the sea. she didn't give me much info about the films mainly because SHE didn't know much about them, but i was like "sure, i'll go see them". i saw the two movies and while i liked kaguya, song of the sea...stuck with me. the narrative was simple yet engaging, it had astounding animation, and it was really interesting to learn about something i've never known beforehand: irish mythology. now at 16 years old, i own the dvd, listen to the songs "song of the sea" and "dulaman" almost constantly, am learning them on piano, and it's on my list of my 10 favorite animated movies. yeah :) ugh this movie is somethin' else. a good somethin' else at that. i really REALLY wish this won the oscar for best animated feature back in 2015, and i was even rooting for it at the time. but oh, well it's the academy. they only like having indie films win if they're live action because ApPaReNtLy aNiMaTiOn iS fOr ChiLdReN aNd ShOuLd NeVeR bE tAkEn SeRiOuSLy. this peculiar world we live in...anyway, this was such a great video, thank you for making it.

Truth be told I had a rant in the first draft of the script about the Academy Awards, but had to cut it because... relevance. But needless to say this film and a few others (*cough*The Breadwinner*cough*) are why I no longer watch the ceremonies. Ok, I believe that Ben was totally underrated this whole film and terribly treated. YES, I understand he was a jerk but let me lay it out. He's not younger than five when he's awaiting his baby sister with his beloved mother. He watches his mother disappear into the sea, which he can only comprehend as drowning. He also watches his father cry, which to any kid is terrifying. When he meets Saoirse, all he can understand is that she is there, and his mother isn't, thinking that delivering her is what made her go away. Everything was ripped away from him - a caring father, a loving mother, and a sibling who he expected was to be his best friend. Now he's forced to grow up in a distant island with nothing but his dog while his distant father barely speaks or plays with him, and a sister who he can never understand. Not only that, but he has to deal with the trauma from watching his mother leave without understanding what happened. All he has is her stories and lullabies, which he's cherished as the only thing that brought him true happiness. Then his sister tries to learn them too. It was special to Ben, it was all he had of her. And now he has to share the one thing that brought him peace. He feels betrayed from his father for making him go to a new, dull and cold place that he's never been to before. And when his mother comes back, what does she do? Nothing! I'm sorry but she took Saoirse in her arms and did barely anything else. Ben always wanted a hug, a cuddle, an "I love you" which he barely got. So I do understand him. Everyone he had failed him.
@moviemonarch1617
@moviemonarch1617 3 жыл бұрын
You're not wrong about Ben's resentment being very understandable, but it doesn't absolve him of wrong doing. It simply does not. Nor does it absolve Conner for not getting himself and his children into therapy. And that's the point of the film. To show what grief looks like in a family. Ben was neglected, without question. But does that neglect negate his treatment of his little sister? No. But it does make it and him understandable and that's why I love this film. It brings something so complex to the forefront of our attention and forces us to have these conversations that hopefully inch us closer towards healing that we we need. If you're empathizing this hard with Ben I would urge you to ask yourself why? And maybe look at another character you don't like and ask yourself why that is? What are they doing that upset you and why? Why are you feeling so strongly? Look at the different perspectives here. Not just Ben Saoirse. But Conner and Granny. The mother. The fairyman. They each bring a unique perspective to the story. What is it and why is it important? Why do you like? Why do you hate it? If you hate it, there's usually a reason. I urge you to figure out why.

@@moviemonarch1617 what is your opinion on Ben's mom though? And what do you think happened? I was thinking, even if due to some circumstances she simply HAD to leave them, could she not have visited as a seal? That is if I'm looking at it as she simply transformed. However, if she died and this is all happening on Halloween, is her spirit visiting and was Saoirse on the verge of death for her mother to offer her a hand to "her" world, which in this case, would be the afterlife? And do you think maybe the reason she didn't give Ben a hug was a symbolism for his need to let go of his grief (what his mom may or may not represent) and move on? Also if we consider Ben's mother as grief itself, perhaps Saoirse was almost taken by such an emotion as well, however was able to choose differently?

My mom and I came up with a theory. My mom, being a psychological person, believed it was a metaphor for Ben's life and his imagination. (Is that what you were saying?) I'll start at the beginning. Ben, at the age of six, loses his mother, as she dies in childbirth. Not quite grasping the fact of death yet, he makes up a story about the sea and where his mother is now. For six more years, he resented his sister because he believes she made his mother go away "Into the sea". After all this grief and other pains, resentment, yadda yadda, Ben and siera (I know that's not how you spell it but It's an odd name.) were told to not go near the water, Siera does it anyway in the dead of night after being called to it. She nearly drowns (I'm talking in a literal sense where she isn't, supposedly, a Selkie.). Grandma finds her and Siera catches a cold. After a little while, with the stress of the situation, Conor (The dad) sends both children to their grandmother in the city forever. Ben protests and, still having the memories of his mom's stories in mind, puts them into the real world and "Lives them". He escapes his grandmother's home and follows these "Creatures" through this fictional world, dragging a still sick Siera with him. Over the course of the film, Siera gets worse. Soon, after many adventures through this land, he meets The Owl Witch, who was told, in the stories, to be bad. She rejects the idea and says she only wants to take the pain away. This is a metaphor for Ben having a way out, but not taking it. It is also a metaphor for the many mixed feeling inside of the boy. He grabs the conch Siera brought on the journey and, since he can't, asks Siera to play it. She's too weak, though, so he encourages her with his mother's song. She plays the conch and releases the feelings. This could signify Ben letting go of some of his feelings through his mother's memories. Siera gets worse and it seems she got pneumonia from being in the coldness of the sea. Ben, trying to connect her with the memories of her mother in an attempt to save her, gets the white coat and gives it to her, making her a bit healthier, and somehow able to speak. Soon, however, her health decreases once more, almost leaving her dead. She comes close to "Going with her mom", both literally and how Ben imagines it. The clutches of death let her go and she lives. Soon after, Ben becomes content with the fact that Siera did not kill his mother and they live happily together.

Both me, my husband, and our two daughters absolutely love this film. We have a family movie night every Friday; one Friday, I suggested this movie because I had heard one of the songs on KZbin. Needless to say, almost every Friday my kids ask for this movie as the first of the night. And no matter how many times we watch it, my husband and I both bawl like big, ugly babies.

really great video! A note on your pronunciation, though, the ó (like in Bróna) is pronounced like 'oh' in case you plan on doing any future videos on this film. Also the Irish language is only really referred to as Irish, not Gaelic. If you reference Gaelic in Ireland everyone just assumes you're talking about football! Also I don't know if it was intentional, but I thought the part where Ben picks up the hurl (looks like a wooden hockey stick) to fight off the owls was a subtle nod to the myth of Cú Chulainn (pronounced coo-cull-in in case you're wondering). Just thought you might be interested!
@moviemonarch1617
@moviemonarch1617 5 жыл бұрын
lol yeah I realize my pronunciation is all over the place especially when it came to Bronagh. For some strange reason my American tongue was like 'nope! can't do it.' I was even tempted to put a disclaimer saying, 'I'm clearly American. I'm trying.' But one of my best friends who's from Sligo was like 'yeah the language is pronounced nothing like its spelled. We know this. Just do your best. But if you pronounce Samhain as 'sam:hain' I will feckin' kill you.' So I made sure to get that one right. As for the Gaelic vs Irish thing, I was aware. Again, my friend learned the language on duolingo and he always referred to them as his Irish lessons. I just chose to go with Gaelic to avoid any annoying Americans going, 'wtf is Irish?' Because, sadly enough, it has happened to me before. So it was a stylistic choice to avoid any confusion on my side of the pond. Sorry if it caused some on yours. As for the Cú Chulainn Ben nod...you could be right. I know there were a lot of jokes and references crammed into the movie. It's totally possible I missed one or many more. For instance: when I first saw the film I missed the 'si do mhaimeo' joke where they changed the line 'cailleach an airgid' to 'cailleach oíche' which was definitely a reference to Macha. And it wasn't like I was unfamiliar with the song either. Si do mhaimeo is one of my favorites (as done by Celtic Woman), but when I saw the film I just assumed it was a different pronunciation than I was used to hearing. It wasn't until I was watching Tomm Moore's commentary that no, the change was VERY deliberate. It just went over my head. And if that's what happened here Cú Chulainn, I wouldn't doubt it. I know a bit about Celtic myths but not as much as I do Greek, Norse, or Egyptian. So, thank you for letting me know! I'll definitely be looking into it and I'm happy to hear you enjoyed my take on the film. Cheers!

From rewatching the movie it kinda feels like the father is putting Saorise on a pedestal. Why wouldn't he. The mother wanted to save the baby and the baby even looks like her. When Ben tells his father that she went into the water (therefore broke a rule) he takes her onto his arms and doesn't scold her while Ben behind him asks "Dad?".
@moviemonarch1617
@moviemonarch1617 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think Conner was placing Saorise on a pedestal because that to me has the connotation of putting her above Ben to the point where she can do no wrong, which seems true until we take into consideration that it's Saorise birthday. Conner could've easily been ignoring Ben's complaints because he's remembering that it's also the day of their mothers death and doesn't want Saorise suspecting that her birthday is anything other than a happy occasion. Whereas Ben would see the discrepancy of treatment and feel crummy.

I’ll definitely be checking out the other films you’ve analyzed. ;) I would also recommend checking out Moore’s previous film, The Secret of Kells. You're in luck!! Cartoon Saloon has just released 'WolfWalkers' and it's only playing in select cinemas for a VERY short period of time in the USA thanks to Covid. But I've seen it. I HIGHLY recommend it. It will be released for Apple TV on December 11th, but if you can see it at a drive through there's a scene that will make all the hassle worth it. Trust. To find out where it's playing near you just go to gkids dot com and WolfWalkers should be the main banner where you can press the learn more button and it'll have a search for theaters near you where it's playing. Good luck and tell your friends. This film needs all the help it can get.

@@MissMoontree Maybe??? But I highly doubt it. It's a very Euro-Halloween movie, but perhaps the American networks will overlook that aspect because of its ending. But I honestly wouldn't bank on it because a) Americans have a lot of trouble with accents and b) but the heavy themes of familial grief may be too much for Christmas.

Oh, well, I live in Europe, so that is why I have hope. Mune guardian of the Moon (I think it was French originally) was on commercial tv lately. As well as Kubo and the two strings (American, but lesser known studio). Also, I can receive BBC, who really show a lot of different movies around Christmas. Dutch national tv also introduced me to Studio Ghibli. I'm glad to have many different national tv channels, who don't have breaks in the movies (though watching Lord of the Rings was a bit hard without toiletbreak).
@MissMoontree

But since it is for kids, it will probably be dubbed if it is on any non-English channel. I don't mind much, would even be glad to watch it in German. I agree that America is very American centric. Perhaps they would dub it too. Scottisch accents can be harder to understand than other accents. The story does seem tame enough to show in America from what I remember.
