What is the orchestra playing in the beginning? Is it part of “Song Of the Shadows?”

I think it was a piece composed by Michael W. Smith. Sounded like one of his arrangements from his instrumental/orchestral albums.

What has made me dislike this video is the conductor’s choice to add in various instrumental music that was not in Joe Martin’a composition as well as removing what is, perhaps the greatest anthem within the work, Agnus Dei, and replacing with the the Stainer God So Loved the World. Then the reading was left in that translates the Agnus Dei, which only made the Stainer stick out that much more. Joe’s composition is strong enough to stand on its own and would have led to a shorter service.

I agree, Matt. I watched through the whole performance waiting for Agnus Dei, and was very disappointed to see that it had been replaced.

Same here! My choir did this cantata years ago, and Agnus Dei was my favorite song! I kept going back over this thinking there is no way they would leave it out. Agree about the disappointment of swapping out the best song! Overall, I really enjoyed this performance today as a reflection.
