I was a Talent Coordinator for this show. So many amazing performances that night.

How lucky you were to be involved in this show. I have a DVD of this which I acquired through a PBS Station. While all of the evening was so memorable, my two favorite moments were watching Michael Feinstein and Davis Gaines whose artistry sent my soul soaring! How lucky you were to be there!!

To my best friend Marcos who loved this Broadway play and passed away a few days ago. He was too young to be taken away from us. Bless you Marcos and your sweet soul.

It's ALL there. The setting, the half-remembered song, falling in love. The older I get, the more meaningful this song becomes.

By far, the best performance of this song by anyone. Listen to that tone and control. I was just starting as a piano major at FSU when Davis Gaines was graduating. I got to accompany him a few times. I always marveled at his magnificent tone and stunning vibrato. Blew me away every time.

I bought the DVD of this concert after seeing it on my local PBS station, and if you are a fan of Jerry Herman it's an investment you will never regret. Pay attention also to a great comical performance by Lorna Luft as an aging stripper. Outrageous!!

What a beautiful rendition. I find most 'Broadway/West End' voices too forced and vibrato heavy, but Davis Gaines nails it and has a lovely, silken quality. Thank you for posting.

For any Davis Gaines fan, I suggest you look for CD called "Against The Tide". All the songs show different styles, but his rendition of "Old Man River" is unique. He starts out very lightly and builds up to a fabulous finish. The way he holds that last note is just mesmerizing. Talk about breath control as an artist!!!!

wow, who is this davis gains! i cried, and cried and cried listening to his version of this beautiful song, sung on stage originally by gene barry. gene's baritone voice is absolutely beautiful too. gene was of bat masterson fame on tv years ago (i believe in the 50's). i loved him in bat masterson and i adored him in la cage aux folles

One of Jerry Herman's most beautiful? I can think of at least 25 or 30 that would fall in that category. To me, up until now, this was just a song that was appropriate for storyline and scene. However, when Mr Gaines (who I had never heard of or seen before) sang this, this becomes a different species all together. His unique and beautiful gifted voice is so very magically mesmerizing and hypnotic. 🤔🤗👍💌

Do you recall that windy little beach We walked along? That afternoon in Fall, That afternoon we met? A fellow with a concertina sang, What was the song? It's strange what we recall, And odd what we forget... I heard La da da da da da da As we walked on the sand. I heard La da da da I believe it was early September. Though the crash of the weaves, I could tell that the words were romantic; Something about sharing, Something about always. Though the years race along, I still think of our song on the sand. And I still try and search for the words I can barely remember. Though the time tumbles by, There is one thing that I am forever Certain of. I hear La da da da da da da Da da da da da da And I'm young and in love. I believe it was early September. Though the crash of the weaves, I could tell that the words were romantic; Something about sharing, Something about always. Though the years race along, I still think of our song on the sand. And I still try and search for the words I can barely remember. Though the time tumbles by, There is one thing that I am forever Certain of. I hear La da da da da da da Da da da da da da And I'm young and in love...

This song has special memories for me. My ex and I used to spend our holiday vacations at Cedar Point, sometimes riding the rides, playing the arcade games, sometimes drinking at the Breakers, sometimes just strolling the beach! It was our favorite romantic place! Unfortunately, after years of infidelity on his part, I tried using our usual vacation to try to resurrect our relationship. Didn't work! Ended up playing a break-up tape on the drive home. Never been back, I couldn't bear it!

In the context of the actual show he's far too young for the song - but he still sings it beautifully.

True. He is actually too young for the part. However, his very tender, soulful and dramatic performance with that super enchanting voice makes you truly believe. This very gifted singer bares his soul, living out each and every word of this song. Truly the most beautiful and very best performance by anyone of this song!🤔🤗👍💌

This was back in the day when Davis still looked good before he started all the plastic surgery and screwed up his face. I worked with Davis years ago when he was still handsome and charming. Now he looks like a desperate many trying to hang onto being 35 and trying to convince everyone else he is too. I guess when you're good looking in your younger years it's tough to except when you're getting older and your time has past and your looks have faded and you no longer have them.

My friends took me to see the play on my birthday, March 8, 1985 in New York City. It was that evening that I found out that my other half of 6 years was having an affair with another man who was sitting next to me.

I saw Gene Barry perform this. Definitely not the smoothest singer but such carriage and panache. This is really a singing performance not an acting performance
