“Violator” was their best album and one of the best albums of all time. IMHO “Violator” landed like an alien in the spring of 1990 given that since 1988, most popular music in North America was firmly in the grips of hair metal. I was graduating that summer but nixed going to my high school prom since it was the same night that Depeche Mode were playing Montreal that night for a sold-out-in-15-minutes show at the Montreal Forum. My high school was like a really bad John Hughes film and I would rather celebrate my favourite band of all time with 5th row seats that I had slept out for for 2 nights instead of spending all this money looking my best on a bunch of people I couldn’t stand being around. It paid off. After the concert, we went to the hotel where they were staying and I ended up meeting Martin and Fletch, took pictures and I ended up chatting with Martin for about 10 minutes. He told us which industrial goth club they were going to and invited us along. We met them at the club and I actually danced with Fletch and Alan. Come Monday morning and I find out that prom was a bust, everyone hated it. When people asked me what I did, I told them and eventually showed them the pictures. NOT going to prom was the best decision of my life.

One thing that rarely gets mentioned is the sheer harmonic genius of Gore's writing - just the first two chords of this song's verse: Cminor to Eb minor - are incredibly bold and unusual, yet he resolves it effortlessly. Also the last two chords of the chorus, Cminor to B major, create such an arresting denouement (Radiohead stole that move a few times). This is another factor missing from the over-corrected, conservative electronic pop of the moment - harmonic intrigue. Everything is the same old I V vi IV or a slight shuffling of the same. Great series, Warren!

"Depeche Mode 101" is one of the all time great concert films. One of my favorite bands is New Order. So Depeche Mode were up my alley. they had pop sensibilities and gave it a dark twist. The ability to pump drama up to immense levels and have that mean something. No camp at all. Excellent video Warren. Being a huge DM fan, I've been waiting for this one. For me, the organic vs. electronic parts in this are that the drums (kick, snare, hi-hats) are tight on a sequencer grid (probably an Atari ST or similar), but everything else is either played manually or sampled loops. The ARP 2600 part of the bass was sequenced using Sample & Hold on the filter to create that "bubbly" sound it has. The band then sampled loops for each chord in the song and then flew them in from an Emulator II which would have given them a more grainy feel due to the limited sampling bandwidth. DM were also dab hands at sticking drums through a large PA and recording the results with microphones - capturing the room as it were
@dddux2 жыл бұрын
Drums are pure Roland-909 and it's got a nice pattern and song sequencer on it, but if you retrofitted it with a Sync>MIDI interface, it could be played by an Atari with Cubase, C-Lab or some other sequencer. I was a fan of Cubase at the time.

What I find interesting about it is that what could be brushed off as a “disco arrangement” actually helps drive home the point of “enjoying the silence”. The elements were well-chosen and very precise and provide all the space needed to let the lyrics make its point. And yes, it’s amusing that you are using words despite making the assertion of “words, like violence, break the silence” and “words are very unnecessary, they can only do harm”. But like the music, the words are also very well-chosen. After all “all I ever I wanted, all I ever needed is here in my arms” … can’t really top that 😁 And finally, as something of a composer/producer myself 😉, I find that organic-synthetic comes from the arrangement and the performance. But even if you program it in advance, you can still give it feeling and life and that can be in the mix. In the end, there has to be a feeling present, an emotional core if you like. When I worked as a senior engineer for Roland, I overhauled Daniel Miller's System 700. He was so pleased with my work, he gave me every album on Mute records shelf (I had all of Depeche Mode and Erasures stuff). I really liked DM back in the early 80s and also Human League (whom I've also repaired gear for), .

My absolute favourite Depeche Mode song. And I too ― found, moved in with, and married ― the love of my life, around the time of the release of this song in the months of January & February of that year of 1990. And those lyrics, Warren! ‘All I ever wanted All I ever needed Is here in my arms...’ Like OMG! I really enjoyed this, Warren. Thank you!

I am literally a lifelong fan of Depeche Mode. Much of their music came out before I was born. I thank my parents for listening to new wave music with me as I was growing up. Depeche Mode was always in heavy rotation ever since I can remember. I'm so glad to have found this video breaking down and appreciating Enjoy the Silence, one of my all-time favorite songs. I learned something new about the music I cherish. Personally, I love the irony of the lyrics and the juxtaposition of the meaning and the sound of the song. I'm someone who finds greater connection to the sound of music than the lyrics; to me, "words are very unnecessary," quite literally. So I always interpreted "enjoy the silence" as phrase meaning: enjoy the world without words, we can meaningfully find enjoyment in other ways besides talking. I also enjoy the irony that I find such meaningful connection to this song, both music and lyrics. This song truly is a masterpiece. Thank you for making a great video!

Excellent exposé on this amazing song and the band behind it. Some people don't understand why we love 80's and 90's Synth Pop so much. Dare I say it was "simple", yet organic and musically amazing. 10 out of 10 Warren. 🔥

I remember being super young and only listening to classical music to fall asleep and radio Disney any other time. Then my dad changed the station on our car radio and this song came on. I was instantly mesmerized and shushed my parents when they tried to continue their conversation. Instantly became a favorite of mine. My dad was charmed and shared how the song was released when he was just finishing high school - that the song always transports him to that time where he felt the eagerness and anxiousness of becoming an adult. It is a magnificent song that to this day has a special place in my heart. So cool to see how this song and, more generally, music has this way of moving so many people in different walks of life.

I just play all my unsequenced synth parts in live and record as audio. No midi, no quantising. Except for my sampling rythm programmer, which is sequenced. Basically you just have to be half decent at playing and slip into the groove and/or feeling of the track intuitevely. Don't think too much. Relax. You have to feel the track as a whole instead of trying desperately to keep in time. Well, some people say you've either got it or you haven't. Maybe that's just it! Depeche Mode were a huge influence and inspiration. Thanks for this.

Interesting! I was never a fan of Depeche Mode's music but watched this episode start to finish. I learned a lot of things about them I found quite interesting. Not being a fan I never knew that Gahan wasn't that involved in the songwriting or production. By the end of the episode I found myself questioning why I didn't like the band when I was young. I think this means you did a great job!

I think your obvious love of the elements of the song highlight why your channel is different from most others on here. I get tired of other people that broadcast shredding and playing at 300mph as being ‘good’ music - they completely forget what great songwriting is and confuse it for technique. It’s great to watch you sit there and appreciate individual elements where there are only eighth notes or even just one hanging tone across a bar. You really get it and it’s wonderful to see. So many thanks for the channel.

Thanks ever so much J J! That really means a lot. I agree there’s very often too much focus on the technical, I believe that’s because it’s easier to teach, where artistry and creativity is really the most important ingredient

Couldn’t agree with you more! Was addicted to Tears for Fears (their 1st album especially), the Blue Nile, and Peter Gabriel’s 4th album as examples of the awesomeness when perfectly blending inorganic and organic music.. Later Massive Attack & Thievery Corp (especially their live shows) did this to perfection. What it consistently underscores is incredible and inventive songwriting! Will always be a diehard DM fan👌🏼

This was my first CD I ever purchased. Freshman year in high school. Ultimately set up my audio system in my room wanting to hear this song the way it needs to sound. Ended up collecting their back catalog, singles, and I guess I got into the electronic music - Erasure, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, etc. All because of this song: Enjoy the Silence.

I’ve always been a little surprised that your show is overall so unlike the feel of Rick Beato’s, because they effectively cover the same ground. But here you are just so animated and into it, how much you’re identifying with this is just blasting through, and that enthusiasm and love of the music, especially performed and organic and not snapped to a grid, very much reminded me of Beato’s, in the best way.

Another band that blended electronic and organic was New Order. Temptation is maybe my favorite song by anyone. Love the layered synths and drum machine with the guitar and bass weaving in and out.

They were already superstars several times over when this song was released. Their continued relevance is a testament to their enormous talent. I feel lucky to have grown up with this band (and OMD). There was a time when "See You" was my fave DM track. God that was so long ago. I wouldn't have believed my own music could be 100% synths if it weren't for them. (sorry, just could never get into Kraftwerk)
