So anything from the Guilford Four, from 1977. My choice would be Straighten out/ Something better Change. Double a-side or anything off Rattus/No More Heroes.

Dear Warren. This is the genuine ME. 😊 I played bass on the record. I think some of the info on the video isn’t quite complete so here is what I recall. First bit of trivia, the song was written on a fire escape in Edinburgh, not Newcastle. It was written while we were on the Stiff Tour of late ’77 as a direct riposte to Ian Dury’s ‘Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll’. ‘Pump It Up’ made its debut appearance at the Lancaster University gig of that tour. The descending motif riff references the Damned’s ‘Neat, Neat, Neat’ and the bass line is a hybrid of the Everly Brothers ‘Price of Love’ and Richard Hell’s ‘You Got To Lose’ ̶ so yes, as you say, punk and ‘60s mixed. After the Stiff Tour we went on our first US Tour (remember December’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ appearance) and got back to England for Christmas, when we set about recording 'This Year’s Model’. ‘Pump It Up’ wasn’t a new song that EC brought to the studio, we’d been playing it for a couple of months by then. So, either Pete has forgotten this, or he is indulging in a bit of myth building. He’s right though that it was done first take. Nick Lowe actually made an important contribution by suggesting that the verse after the break (which were originally all the same, in B) have a shift up to E so that it sounded more like a Middle 8 and gave the song a lift. Mick Jones of the Clash later came in and overdubbed a guitar part, but it wasn’t used on the final mix. His part is however on the recently released remixed version of ‘Pump it Up’ on the Spanish language version of the album, ‘Spanish Model.’

When I first heard Elvis on the radio I instantly loved everything I heard. It was so different than anything I had heard before. So raw and energetic, with a quirky sense of humor. And Elvis seemed like a parody of himself. I ran out and bought My Aim is True on 8-track and wore it out, playing it over and over. Then when This Years Model came out, I thought there was no way it was going to be as good as My Aim is True, but when I heard it, it was even BETTER! Not quite as raw, but you could hear that distinct Elvis sound being refined just a bit. Again, I had to have it. Then Armed Forces came out. Again I was convinced that there is just no possible way it would match the previous two. To my pleasure, I was wrong again. What a great time it was for music! Watching Pete Thomas play Pump It Up was great! Totally fascinating hearing his story. Thanks Pete!

Not to ignore all his other amazing songs, but this is my favorite Costello song. It just has a power that never diminishes, no matter how many times you hear it. It's inspired by the past, but never sounds dated. And these guys (minus Bruce) are STILL putting out amazing music. I do not know how Elvis manages to put together an entire album of great, clever, well-written songs time after time after time. He never runs out of things to say or stories to tell. He's a living legend.

This Year's Model was the album that introduced me to Elvis Costello, when it first came out in 1978. Elvis was one of first three artists, who also introduced me to new wave and punk, back in 1978. The others being The Clash, and the Ramones, who need to be a topic of a future video of yours. Being in the UK, you have no idea how this music was ignored here in the USA at the time. The censorship from corporate owned radio and television was incredible. We were force fed a steady diet of Journey, Bob Seger, Foreigner, etc. You might want to dig up the review Rolling Stone published at the time, of This Year's Model. The only way we learned about this music was by reading the right music magazines, hanging out in indie record stores, or through low power college, and semipublic radio stations. Even bands like The Jam, and The Stranglers, two of my top bands of all time, were ignored here in the US. It wasn't until Elvis teamed up with Paul McCartney, and had that huge hit with Veronica, that mainstream media began to reassess their opinion about the guy.

Damn, I love classic Elvis Costello. Especially “Get Happy!!” … The Nick Lowe and Costello synergy is sublime in those early albums. I really like everything up to and including “Imperial Bedroom”. The Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds’ Rock Pile, and Squeeze very smart and clever energy and aesthetic are so appealing to me, and so tenderly nostalgic, and memory evoking, back to my elementary and middle school days, and into high school. Saw Elvis Costello live a couple times in the very early 1980s, and so blessed that I did. I’d love to see a feature on Squeeze, Warren.

I’ve requested something on Elvis Costello three or four times. Thank you this was fantastic. You sharing your memories of discovering Elvis prompts me to share mine. In 1977 my parents bought me my first stereo for my room. With my Christmas money I wanted to buy albums by Boston and Aerosmith. I bought those but on that trip to my local record shop, I saw an album with this guy wearing Buddy Holly glasses named Elvis and it intrigued me.The next week when I had more money I went back to the shop and bought it. My wife was changed instantly. I lost all interest in bands like Boston and Aerosmith. Elvis interested me in Words. I thought I would become a songwriter, which got me into reading poetry, which lead reading other forms of literature, and eventually led me to going to college, which I wouldn’t have done otherwise, and I’ve made a living as a writer most of my adult life. And it all started with My Aim is True. I got back into playing guitar again a couple years ago when I became obsessed all over again with This Year‘s Model. I pretty much listened to it every minute of every day for a solid week and decided I had to learn to how to play every song on the album, which I eventually did.

In 1978 I was 11 yrs old. My Dad worked for Cable TV Channel and FM radio station in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. He'd bring home loads of music for me to listen to, stuff that didn't fit the radio stations genre statement of easy listening. So in the course of a summer I could get the first Van Halen Record, or Elvis Costello and the Attractions and many more and the only defect was a hole punched through the album cover. Elvis Costello & the Attractions quickly became a favourite of mine that summer (And I think Making plans for Nigel was about that time by XTC) and from that point on my pre-teen and teen aged mind would be hooked on the New Wave sound until it abruptly shifted gears with Nirvana in 1990/91. Several of the Pre-scene New wave bands like Elvis Costello, The Cure, the Police, Devo, XTC, Bauhaus, Boomtown Rats, Gary Numan, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Joy Division, Adam & the Ants even The B-52's I still love to listen to today. The music was avant-garde, full of attitude, brilliantly written, contains some seriously gorgeous riffs and all of it, changed a generation, changed My generation and still has huge influence to this day!!

I remember the first time I heard this song. Bob Rivers (great radio dj) played it on the morning show on KISW. I was blown away. I recognized that it was Elvis Costello but I'd never heard this track. It by far my favorite now. Thanks for the brake down 🙂

Great video - thank you. Costello produced such a run of great hits around that time - Olivers Army, Chelsea, I can't stand up....such a great catalogue of music and some incredible recordings.

Elvis Costello is undoubtedly a great song writer. One of my all-time favourite albums is The Juliette Letters, with The Brodsky Quartet. Clever, witty, insightful, incisive, poignant lyrics, and fantastic melody throughout. How many other contemporary artists have produced such a fantastic classical crossover? And his singing on these tracks is outstanding. He was and is a class act!

Brilliant video Warren! Elvis Costello really is one of the greatest songwriters of our generation, and to get Pete Thomas to show how he set up and played the drums on it - simply terrific! Loved the track breakdown too.

Elvis Costello is great-both fresh and familiar. He was so prolific in those days. May sound weird, but Elvis Costello was my favorite music for house cleaning. If Pump it Up won’t get you inspired nothing will. Costello’s follow-up Get Happy even more so. Not only did the songs keep me going, the album was packed with music. Back in the vinyl days I could finish the dishwashing in one side without having to flip the record over!

This was a real treat! Watching Pete play along was awesome! I saw that band in their heyday 1979, on the "Armed Forces" tour, but in a club, not a theater like usual. They were doing some weird radio promo stunt. They played three different clubs all in the same night, and all the segments were broadcast live. They would play a set, run to the next club where the gear was all set up in advance, play a set and then run to the next club to play the next set! The band was phenomenal. Every one of them was a powerhouse.

Break my heart Mr. Huart. I had a different take on Costello when I first saw his albums in the malls of Canada. Buddy glasses, Mustang, posing like a dork on purpose and thought, "well, that's a pretentious prat". But then I heard "Two Little Hitlers" and crumbled. Pete Thomas play though!!!!! Are you kidding me. Thankyou thankyou thankyou! Such an excellent vid. (BTW. Hit the couch for a break and though "ok I'' just catch five minutes of this then maybe watch the rest later" , couldn't stop. Respect to you. Todd

So informative! It's hard to find good documentary material on Elvis Costello. To me he's the ultimate serious rocker - he walks the walk, and though he's paid his dues many times over, just keeps going strong.

Ace, Warren 👌. 1978 was a good year for Elvis singles. "(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea", "Pump It Up" and "Radio, Radio" all tight, rocking tracks with great lyrics. A bit more complex than straight punk.
