Another song with a disturbing backstory is Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. In 1981, Jackson had received a fan letter claiming that he was the father of one of her children, even though Michael had never heard of or seen this woman in his life. The fan continued to send letters that they would love each other and would eventually get married. These letters disturbed Jackson so much, that he had repetitive nightmares about the fan and her claims. Later on, he received a parcel from the fan. It contained a photograph of the fan, a gun, and a letter saying to end his life. She had also mentioned in the letter that she had an abortion on their “baby” and said she would start a new life without him or the baby. The fan was later discovered to be in a mental hospital.

To go further into depth on the story behind Polly, the last verse says “she caught me off my guard, amazes me the will of instinct” referencing to the fact that the girl in the story convinced Friend that she liked what he was doing to her in order to gain his trust. Eventually, he untied her from the pulley and took her on a ride to get gas. While he wasn’t looking, she got out of the car and started screaming for someone to help her and that’s how she got saved.

One of the weirdest interviews was when Kanye was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno after his mom died and right after the Taylor Swift incident. Here’s one for ya: “Iowa” by Slipknot Iowa is pretty much about a necrophiliac who goes insane with lust towards a decaying body. Screwed up. But what’s so dark is what happened when recording the song. Lead singer Corey Taylor was a massive alcoholic and was frequently drunk during recording times. However, he was at his worst when recording Iowa. Taylor was completely BUTT-NAKED wearing nothing but his mask, repeatedly vomiting on himself. Not to mention, he was holding a piece of broken glass that he was using to slice his hand. Meaning that each and everyone of those screams in the song was a actual scream of pain. All of this lead to a extremely disturbing and hard to listen to product. Thank CHRIST Corey got clean.

Funnily enough, on the EXACT SAME ALBUM, the opening track “515”, contains the pained and distraught screams and wails of Sid Wilson,the band’s DJ, after discovering that his grandfather had died. You can hear him scream crying and even choking at times, given the context it’s really horrible to listen to. I have no idea if you are interested in vocaloid music, but the song “Coin locker baby” by Maretu is quite the gem, it is in japanese and refers to the cases of japanese mothers abandoning their babies in storage lockers at train stations. Also the song “Secrets of Wisteria” by Steampianist. It directly refers to the real life murders of british serial killer Albert Fish. It is extremely graphic though, so be wary. Hope you enjoy! I remember a song call daddy by korn, in the wiki it states: "Jonathan Davis has stated that the song is about a painful experience of being molested as a child and not being believed. However, he denied it was about physical or sexual abuse at the hands of his father, and the title and some concepts within the song stem from his parents not believing him. The song caused many to assume that Jonathan's father Rick Davis had molested his son. It is a source of embarrassment for Rick, though his son has gone on the record in many interviews saying it was actually written about a family friend. I feel like Nirvana's "You know you're right" deserves a place here, and as disturbing as the context behind Polly is, I find that this song was of a cry for help from Kurt than nobody ever noticed. Before I go into detail, the specific reason I think its so disturbing is that given the context of the lyrics, and the fact that the song was recorded less than 3 months before the suicide of Kurt, makes it seem especially grim. "I will never follow you, I will never bother you, never speak a word again, I will crawl away for good" "I'm so warm and calm inside, I no longer have to hide" These two lines specifically show the mentality of kurt and they hit me pretty hard as somebody who has suffered from depression. To go through that selfish self-destructive suicidal mindset of crawling away and leaving everyone and everything, to die and never bother anyone ever again. As well as feeling calm and warm inside. Although it is speculation, the first thing that comes to mind from my own experience is feeling a certain sense of warmth, comfort and calmness from thinking about killing yourself, you no longer have to hide behind a wall, in the face of your own demise or even the thought of it, you feel freed from your pain. It is a grim thing, but I think many others who have had suicidal symptoms of depression will most likely agree with me on this. Followed up by: "No thought was put into this, always knew it'd come to this" , "Things have never been so swell, I have never failed to fail" I think its pretty clear what context these lines have, and how depressing and hopeless they come across as. The chorus is made up of the word "Pain" and "You know you're right", and while I haven't noted them here the rest of the lyrics seem to most likely point towards Kurt's wife Courtney. I think it is clear that she had a part in his death whether it was involuntarily or not. They had a very toxic relationship and its my belief that it were some of the things she did that drove him to such a low point, which is why its important that the song is mostly about 1. Depressive suicidal thoughts and 2. A woman only caring for herself and always being in the right. This was the last song Kurt would record before his suicide in 1994.

You know you're right, I hate myself and want to die and Frances Farmer will have her revenge on Seattle always felt like they were little hints from Cobain in a way. Perhaps the lyrics "I miss the comfort in being sad" has nothing to do with him and is about Frances Farmer, but given the context that he was suicidal and depressed for many years of his life, I doubt that he doesn't at the least even relate to the content that he so passionately wrote and sang about.

I absolutely love that you're getting into music topics now, i got a few for you: Iowa - Slipknot, a 15 minute devastating track that tells the story of an obsessive person killing and playing with the corpse. Daddy - Korn, a song documenting the lead singer's past experience of being raped by a babysitter, and the fact that his parents didn't listen to him when he told them. Scissors - Slipknot, another longer cut from Slipknot that describes the singer's experiences with drug abuse and suicidal tendencies. Mind - System of a Down, a song about sexual abuse and being told to keep quiet and do as your told. Eraser - Nine Inch Nails, this song is pretty terriffying, the meaning behind it (linked with the album) is that the protagonist has finally found the "ruiner" in their life and the only way to escape this "ruiner" is to end their own life. Prison Sex - Tool, song about child abuse hidden under catchy riffs and a memorable chorus. Dead Skin Mask - Slayer, This song is about the serial killer ed gein and how he deals with his victims. love the new songs mate, keep them coming!

For a long time after I recovered, I thought I’d lost my artistic talent because I had to learn to create from joy instead of depression. If you're doing a part 2 of this, I recommend you check out the song from Korn, "Daddy." It's considered one of their darkest songs. It's about the main vocalist, Johnathon Davis being physically abused by one of his family members (edited correction: a babysitter). And while he tried to tell his parents about this, they thought he was making it up as a joke. It's just one of the songs Davis refuses to play in live shows just because it brings back horrible memories.

i would recommend "Suffer Little Children" by The Smiths. This song is about the Moors Murders from 1963. It talks about how a couple murdered 5 children. "Jeremy" is such a nostalgic yet strange song for me because I remember my mom would always have it on (since she had the best of Pearl Jam CD) while driving and I'd always ask what they meant by the line "Jeremy spoke in class today". She would just brush me off lol. I can see why. Also, for dark songs, "Janie's Got A Gun" by Aerosmith is definitely on my list.

Not a well known song, but "Happy As Annie" by Indie band Larrikin Love. The song follows a unique and bouncy (and a little goofy) fusion of Folk-Ska/Punk, and disguises a horrific story. It has a pretty innocent backdrop until you reach a certain point, to which the lyrics take an EXTREMELY dark turn for the worst. It's basically about the singer frolicking in a summer field only to find a girl having a nap under a tree, lamenting on how she's skipping school in the burning hot. But upon closer inspection, he finds her face was grey and she has her underwear around her ankles. Realizing she'd been raped and murdered, it adds a whole new chill to the infectious chorus of which he sings "Children, please beware". The band hasn't spoken openly about the inspiration and/or whether it was based on actual events. But the lyrics do name a date of the incident. "September 3rd 2003". The obscurity of both the song and the case (if true) just adds a whole lot more to the creepiness.

I think vocaloid has so many terrifying meanings behind sometimes very happy sounding songs. Kikuo and Maretu are probably some of the most famous and are the most scary. Hachi/kenshi yonezu has an album called Diorama made over a long depressive period. It is surprising the album even came to fruition. The song was commissioned for the game Project Sekai and is sung by Wonderlands x Showtime (one of the in game fictional music groups), and the Vocaloid version is sung by Kagamine Rin. OSTER Project is an unrelated artist who also works with Vocaloid, though I believe she's done non Vocaloid stuff too. I'm guessing you might have gotten OSTER Project and Wonderlands x Showtime's named up lol. Hope this helps!

I’m surprised “Pumped Up Kids” by Foster the People wasn’t in. It’s one of the songs that first pops in my head when I think of “happy” melodies with a dark story. I remember being in 9th grade when the song came out and every Friday they would play “what’s in” on the speakers for a few mins. And this song played 4 weeks straight before it was taken down because of the meaning behind it lol. We had an assembly about it where the principal apologized and talked about gun violence. a song that my mom regularly listens to is Ode to Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry, and it's pretty disturbing for an old song. it's about a family's reaction to the news of a local boy's suicide, and how most of the family (apart from the narrator) treats his death with indifference. in one part of the song, it's mentioned that Billie (the boy) was seen with a girl (likely the narrator, but unknown to the character mentioning this) throwing "something" off the very bridge that Billie would jump to his death from. Since the song's release in 1967, there's been wide speculation about what it was they threw off the bridge that may have motivated Billie's suicide, most of which point to a baby.

I'm pretty sure everyone has at least heard of this, but I wanna bring up Everywhere At The End Of Time. It is a 6 hour long album that is basically just what a dementia patient can experience but through audio form. It uses samples of old ballroom music that gets more and more unrecognizable as the album progresses. It is disturbing and VERY depressing to say at least. It doesn't really have a backstory, but the subject matter is very touchy.

Nirvana has a handful of songs that are based (or at least inspired by) some very dark and disturbing true cases. Francis Farmer, Floyd The Barber, Underneath The Bridge and others. The Gazette - Taion, is about the case of Junko Furuta, a Japanese girl who was held hostage by a group of boys and had despicable things done to her over a short period of time, before they put her body in an oil tanker, filled it with concrete and left it in the river… whilst one of the boys parents was aware she was at their house. It happened in the 80s and all of the culprits are back in society now, albeit with changed identities. There’s also a movie about it too. Everything about the song is dark but the melodic guitar solo gives me goosebumps 14 years after I first heard it.

The entire album called “The Holy Bible” from the Welsh band Manic Street Preachers is disturbing but incredible. It was the last album the band released before lyricist Richey Edwards disappeared never to be seen again. It’s widely believed that he either ran away to start anew or he committed S after a battle with ED, alcoholism and SH. His story is very interesting but heartbreaking. The album discusses prostittution, ED, the holocaaust, and how r@pists and murderers should get the death sentence and more. Listener discretion advised but very powerful.

Definitely keen for part 2! I suggest Hamburger Lady by Throbbing Gristle for the next one. It's considered by some to be the scariest song recorded. It's a really jarring piece that describes a burns victim in a hospital who is so burnt that her skin looks like hamburger meat. She was called the hamburger lady because of this, but all of the lyrics are taken from a real letter written by someone who served as a medivac in Vietnam. All of this combined makes this one a bit of a harrowing listen.

I remember watching a video by the KZbin SLO4N about the actress Alexa Nichols and her ex-husband that abused her. He is the lead singer of the band Rhye, and their songs are pretty disturbing. Apparently he sexually assaulted a Japanese fan and recorded her moans and telling him to stop, and he rewinded it and used it as background for one of his songs. He also sampled audio footage of him sexually assaulting his wife and put it in the song too I believe. The song is called 'Don't Call It'. I don't think the lyrics are necessarily 'disturbing' per say but the production and background noises are. So if you do a part 2 you could add that perhaps idk. Edit: I looked up the song on KZbin and it's posted under miloshmakingmusic , Mike Milosh is the lead singer. The song cover is of a naked women, and if I remember correctly I believe that is Nichols and she claimed that that was also used without permission. All around weird.

There's a happy ending to the Norman Puppet if you care about it. It was not actually abandoned, The gofundme was organized by John Kolbek, not interpol ((Also fun fact, John Kolbek was one of the creators of 123 Slaughter Me St. if you remember that)), who purchased the puppet off of ebay after it was passed around and rotted in multiple storage lockers. Another really creepy song is 44 Days by Mr.Kitty Holy damn it shook me to realize that it was written about Junko Furata and her "44 days in hell". Those 44 days she spent in "hell" would be the last of her life. In those days she was constantly beaten, tortured (literally), r*ped, stuffed in a freezer for hours at a time, and it only gets worse. She dies after she was literally set on fire. God i feel horrible after finding that out.

The torture took place for 44 days as they forced Furuta to explain to the Police in the early days of the investigation that she was one of the perpetrator’s girlfriends. If Furuta had said no to her being one of the perpetrator’s girlfriends, then the police could potentially have stopped the abhorrent treatment of Furuta before it got any worse. What really frustrated me about the case is that the perpetrators basically got no prison time with the main leader getting just 20 years. His parents knew and covered the whole thing up, lying to the police and, get this, the main perpetrator’s mother actually sued the Furuta family for causing her son distress as he did not like being in prison. It’s an absolutely disgusting case. They burned her, beat her, raped her, dropped an iron exercise ball on her stomach, invited other men round to rape her, made her inhale paint thinner, sodomised her with a metal rod and a lot more.

I've got a couple of songs. One is by My Chemical Romance. It's not necessarily disturbing, but it is definitely a little spooky. Sleep was written while MCR was staying at a haunted house. The begining of the song has a distorted recording of frontman, Gerard Way (he'll come up again for the 2nd song), describing the nightmares he had. I find that just spooky. The second is Gerard Way's unreleased song, Piano Jam. Again, not really disturbing, but extremely sad. As far as we know it's about his brother and MCR bassist, Mikey Way. Give it a listen it is really sad.

Ruru's Suicide Show on a Livestream by Shinsei Kamattechan. From what I remember the song is a tribute for a Japanese girl (I think she was 13 or 14) named Roro who suffered from mental illness and was really lonely. She used to go on livestreams on KZbin under the name Rorochan_1999. On one stream she was sitting on the balcony of her apartment and contemplating to jump. Roro wanted to become a legend and comments on the stream encouraged her to jump saying things like "If you jump you'll become a legend" and stuff, and so she jumped. The song is in Japanese but it has English translations. I don't think it's ever been publicly said by the band that it was about her but it's just kind of obvious with the lyrics and the name of the song. I think the worst part is that people were dancing to and mocking/making jokes about it on Tik Tok, there was a girl dancing on a balcony while playing this song, it was sick. The singer has an amazing vocal range though, he and his bandmates are seriously great for bringing attention to topics such as suicide and mental health, which are ignored in Asian countries like Japan.

I’d definitely recommend listening to any song by Kikuo, his songs are super disturbing. I’d recommend listening without cc (the songs are in Japanese) and then listen to the song again with cc. It changes the whole atmosphere to his songs. Thanks for another amazing video :3

Kurt was so in tune with pain and the struggle between empathy vs apathy, and even for being such a tortured person he was very kind and had a very strong sense of justice. Songs with disturbing backgrounds are so fascinating to me. Music is very emotional and discovering the meaning behind lyrics has always been a hobby of mine. I've been looking up lyrics and meanings to songs for as long as I can remember. You should totally do a part 2 of this video because there are so many other songs you could talk about. One that comes to mind is "Limousine" by Brand New, it's about the death of a little girl who died in a limo crash because of a drunk driver while on the way home from her older sister's wedding. It's a true story and it's very sad.

If you do a part two, definitely talk about “I don't like Mondays”, by the Boomtown Rats. The song is based on the story of Brenda Ann Spencer, who shot at a school from her house, killing two people and hurting nine. When asked why she did it she responded “I don’t like Mondays”. She was the first well known school shooter at the time, so it’s pretty interesting. Edit: (WARNING: Mentions of the r-word) Just want to add, that, like many school shooters, she does have tragic backstory, which doesn’t excuse her action, but it can make us understand them. Her parents divorced, and she lived with her dad, who allegedly raped and abused her (which her mom knew, but didn’t care about, and also by her statement), and also was the one to give her the gun she used to shoot them. I also want to say that when she stated her reasoning, it was while she was being arrested and interviewed by journalist, so her statement could have been out of fear, because she didn’t know what was going happen to her. Lastly, don’t completely trust me on this as I haven’t read about the case for a long time, so definitely double check on what I’m saying. People can also fact check me in the comments, and I’ll gladly add or change things about my comment. So yeah, definitely check it out

I would love to see a Part 2. Soul Asylum's "Runaway Train" has a music video that doesn't match the song's meaning. The song itself is about the singer's battle with depression. The music video was made into a montage of photos of missing children in hopes of finding them. Most have been found because of that video's popularity since its release in 1994. Aeeosmith's "Janie's Got A Gun'" is pretty messed up, too.

Semi-charmed Life by Third Eye Blind is one of those upbeat happy fun songs that disguises a horrible story. The song is sung from the perspective of someone who starts to do various drugs to liven up what is otherwise a bland, average life. It's about drug addiction and someone losing themselves (and everyone that loved them) to the disease and then ending up wishing they could get out of the grasp of addiction.

“Baby Hotline” by Jack Stauber. ‘The most famous theory about the song is that it seems to likely be about a person who's loved one has passed away and is having troubles moving on and accepting so. The overall theme of calling a baby hotline for their loved one but always being put on hold is likely symbolism is him not accept that she's gone and he can't get back to her, yet he continues to keep trying to see her, mainly seen when the singer says "No, uh, I'll try again though". It eventually leads to the singer killing themselves to get away from their troubles, singing about "wrapping it in with cinnamon and then wrapping the trouble" to be able to be with the loved one, being foreshadowed in the lyric "Someday I will go back outside and see her okay".’

'Christmas Kids' by Roar was written about the (abusive) between Ronnie and Phil Spector. Phil would keep Ronnie trapped in their house, and threatened to kill her and put her in a golden coffin with a glass front to watch her while she was dead. Ronnie would drink excessively to the point of hospitalization just to leave the house.

Another good song very similar to the others on this list is Christmas Kids by Roar. The song is about the abuse that happened between Phil Spector and Ronnie Spector. With his paranoid behavior, Phil would trap Ronnie in their house and prevent her from leaving, even threatening to kill her if she left. The song also switches between the perspective of Phil and Ronnie, touching on Phil's delusions and justifications to himself while Ronnie resorts to alcoholism to escape her harsh reality. A great song overall that touches on an influential yet disgusting human being.

There's one disturbing song that I've heard and that is "Ozone" by Unique Salonga. Despite the song being in filipino, I think it translates well in english. It's about the 1996 Ozone Disco fire, widely known as the worst fire in Philippine history and among the 10 worst nightclub fires in the world. The song gives you a perspective of an average customer of the said disco at that situation and I think it's worth the listen.
