"My child arrived just the other day,
He came to the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.
He learned to walk while I was away.
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew,
He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad.
You know I'm gonna be like you."
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."
My son turned ten just the other day.
He said, "Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play.
Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do." He said, "That's ok."
And he walked away, but his smile never dimmmed,
Said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah.
You know I'm gonna be like him."
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."
Well, he came from college just the other day,
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile,
"What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys.
See you later. Can I have them please?"
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
You know we'll have a good time then."
I've long since retired and my son's moved away.
I called him up just the other day.
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind."
He said, "I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time.
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's got the flu,
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad.
It's been sure nice talking to you."
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me,
He'd grown up just like me.
My boy was just like me.
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
You know we'll have a good time then." "

The saddest part of this song is that it wasn't any one bad thing, but a bunch of little things and he missed it all. No hurt feelings, no family crisis, nothing... just the slow realization of having missed having a connection with his son.

I feel this hard. My dad was always busy working. I kept moving on but eventually one day my dad didn't understand anything I was doing. We are total strangers. He doesn't have many years left I Really need to reconnect with him and make a couple memories before he passes on.

Exactly, this song is the a Opposite idk why people dont understand that. The dad never had time for the kid because too busy, when the kid grew up and the dad wanted to have a litle conversation the kid rejected the dude because he was too busy fo his dad who never gave him quality time except commodities. How fkn sad!

I once was listening to this song with my son and I started crying. He said dad that’s not about you and me. You’re a good dad! With God’s grace I wasn’t that man though my dad was. My son is now 28 and lives far away. We see each other and talk to each other regularly ! God bless Harry Chapin -Harry Lassley

My 6-year son was at a sporting event over a weekend. I didn't attend because I've worked all week and wanted to enjoy my weekend. I told my wife I didn't have a father growing up and he'll be okay. I was at work one day and this song came on, and for the first time, I really listened to it. I stopped what I was doing and started crying... I never missed any of my son's events after that! Both my boys are out of the house now and I cherish every moment, every event, and every school trip I took with them. Thank you, Harry Chapin, for making me understand how lucky I am to be a DAD!

As a kid my Dad cheated on my Mom and moved out of state and was never around for a few years..I would hear this song and it always made me sad. He finally came back and ditched that woman and has been around and very involved and suportive since I was in high school..so maybe he heard this song too lol.

@@lloydchristmas1086 Great that your dad learned early that he was throwing away something he would never get back. My own father was never around. When he passed there wasn't anything to cry over. I caught my wife cheating and she was removed from the family home. I lose time as a single dad because I work more and it is a single parent household now.. Every time my son goes away for visitation weekends, it angers me. That it is time that is taking away from MY SON. I have primary custody for a reason. I recently had to spend 5 months working 70-hour weeks. I explained to the company that had to stop. I told them my son is asking for more of my time with him and it was no longer acceptable. I take my son to school everyday, and I do school volunteer work so I am there. I taught him things like riding a bike, reading, fix things and he teaches himself computers and Even though I'm in that field, he is able to show me things and I tell him I am proud of him.

My great uncle is the one who taught me to fish and my brother, to throw a football when I was 10. I always get envious of wishing I had a dad. could never ask for more man from a grown ass man. my dad joined the marines just to get away from his rough come up, i joined the army to pay for college but also to make my old man proud and to go through what he did and to make him proud as the youngest of his 3 sons. one day your son or daughter will see you the same way i look at my dad i promise man. Just seeing his face when i graduated basic training was all i needed to see my dad was finally proud of me and i had earned his respect. whatever you do as a dad as long as youre around the boy will turn into a stand up guy believe me youre doing the right shit.

When I was 17, I stood at the shed with my old man. This song came on the radio and we sat and sung along, his Dad passed away before I was born and he loved him dearly. Saw him bawl his eyes out talking about the lyrics and how much he missed his Father, my grandfather. Dad passed away 3 years ago this year and I’m 23 now, I’ve got a 7 month old daughter, and I still ask “When you coming home, Dad?”. Miss you, Dad. I love you, Dad. Your boy still thinks about you every second of every day and how different life would be with you here. I listen to this song now and I get how much you missed Grandad. It hurts but I’ll hopefully grow old, tell my kids all about you and make you proud. You raised me and my brothers without the guidance of Grandad, so I know if you did it I know I can too.

Did you notice that at the end of the song, he whines that his son was just like himself, when that wasn't actually true? His son has come about caring about his kids. He had time for them, not for the neglectful dad he hardly knew. His claim that his son had come out just like him was one last self-absorbed indulgence in self-pity.

I lost my dad on January 20th he had dementia. I took care of him for the last 2 years my mom passed in July of 2018. I worked in the day and watched him at night and I am so glad I took the time to do all that I would not ever ever exchange that for the world. My dad knew I loved him and before he passed he thanked me for everything I did for him taking care of him.when I was a kid he would drive me around in his VW and let me put my head outside of the sunroof we had such fun. I wouldn't trade all those memories for anything. Hug your father always

It took me to the age of 33 to understand this song...and my dad. I was always so mad at him for never being there and always working. Mom said it was because he didn't know how to love. Now I realize that he worked himself to death because he loved us so much and because he was afraid that if he didn't he wouldn't be good enough Dad you were good enough and I grew up just like you. I am so proud you were my dad and I miss you.

It is so easy to get busy with life. You even think that you're taking care of your children by being away from them. I'm lucky that I heard this song when my son was still pretty young. It caused me to change course and make more time for him, even when I didn't want to do what he wanted to do. It is about me loving him rather than myself, because he needs it as a growing young man. I also discovered that he's my treasure. He's 17 years old now, and I'm now teaching him how to drive as he prepares for college. God bless you Harry Chapin for writing a song that matters so much. May you rest in peace, dear brother.

I'm so thankful my father always had (and still has!) the time, patience, love and kindness for having great times together and making great memories. And he'd always take me and my friends places when i was young - bowling, amusement parks, concerts, etc. I'd always assumed other kid's fathers did the same - but one time a few of my friends made a sand sculpture of my dad's face to show their appreciation for chaperoning a weekend trip to Lake Erie for my 10th birthday (we had a camper up there)...and to be funny. Dad laughed, thanked them and took a picture of it. It always makes me smile seeing that old picture. Lol.

Cats in the cradle: a powerful song written by Sandy Chapin and made famous by her husband Harry Chapin in the early 70’s. It’s haunting story of a father realizing his short comings too late with the iconic refrain, “My boy was just like me.” In consideration of the story line, it seems the boy did have many problems and shortcomings, but in all irony the boy did not become like his father. He seemed to still admire his dad, but when he became a man he understood that his family was now his priority and came first. For those that have felt loss due to family shortcomings, consider that though blood may be thicker than water, how much better is that bond that marinates into your heart and soul. In your definition of family, include those that truly matter, those who as the Clampetts might say, “relax, take your shoes off.” Some may dispute the meaning of the first part of Proverbs 18:24, but almost every translations agrees with the latter, “...there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” That’s the person, who ‘coincidentally’ out of the blue calls to see how you doing-especially when you are not doing well! The person who lifts your spirit, and does not leave you disheartened because of some personal failing. I’m not talking about your dog, though they often put us to shame in regards to devotion and loyalty. It’s the person in your passing thoughts, who was probably thinking about you already. People in our lives will come, and like some with kids, they grow; cherish those of your yesterday, who are still vital parts of your today and most likely to be there for your tomorrows!

I love how life related this song is! It tells a powerful story of how your kids can grow up and before you know it, they are on their own! They start out as a baby, then as they get older they are in elementary school through high school, then finally college! Then they come home from college and are already in a full time career and have kids. The most heartfelt part is the hanging of the phone as this kid is all grown up and has moved on. Very powerful for life. Harry Chapin will never be forgotten.
