After all these years, Merle is still my favorite. This song and "Silver Wings" are two in particular. One day I found another which destroys me, it's "In My Next Life, I'm Gonna Be Your Hero." It's about an old farmer who is losing the farm and dying. Not exactly gospel, but so incredibly sad.

Man I miss this man. His voice, his writing. My friend and I were hanging out on Merle’s bus after a show, pinching ourselves, when Merle put the cassette tape from the show on and started singing along with it. Two feet from us. Surreal.
