I've watched a lot of ayreon reactions and this song is by far the most popular, I think you've actively recognized the most singers of anyone so far. Definitely the first to know Michael, which I think does say his band is super underrated! Correct that this is the first song, and it functions as character introductions for everyone each of the singers played. Whether you react to the rest of the album or just listen to it on your own, I highly recommend it :)

@@MattFarkas Since you love Circus Maximus so much, which are some of your favorite songs? I've been giving them another listen recently - some of their compositions go into random technical prog territory (kinda like some Seventh Wonder - where Tommy Karevik of Kamelot also sings, or Dream Theater stuff ) but some are fantastic, my two favorites are definitely Mouth of Madness and Zero. I gotta check out the albums after "Isolate". I think I heard a couple of parts or songs from the later albums that I didn't really like that much. I'm looking forward to seeing what Michael pulls of on his project "The Revival" with Jørn Viggo Lofstad - the guitarist of Pagan's Mind. The singer of Pagan's Mind, Nils K. Rue was in this video btw.

@@Bellathor I think all three of their first albums are masterworks in prog metal, while most of the time never getting super wanky (there are some exceptions lol.) A handful of my favorites are Abyss, Namaste, Used, Sin, and Glory of the Empire. The only album I wouldn't personally suggest is Havok, which I don't think lands as well. They went a bit too poppy with it. Or maybe I just haven't given it enough of a chance. It's probably due for a re-listen from me sometime soon.

One detail most don't seem to be aware of, Arjen anonymously put out an album of covers back in 1996 called, "Strange Hobby", hence the joke about his analog synths. The selection of classic songs covered included among others, numbers from early Pink Floyd (Arnold Lane, See Emily Play), The Beatles (Norwegian Wood, For No One), The Who (Boris the Spider), The Stones (Ruby Tuesday), Paul Simon (I Am a Rock), The Beach Boys (Sloop John B) & The Monkees (Daydream Believer). Afterthought: It just hit me that the title of the album almost certainly comes from the lyrics of Arnold Lane, who of course also had a "strange hobby".

The binary code supposedly means: "Trust TH1", which the character is of Michael Mills in this album (the computer who seems to help the humans in their struggle, but does he really...? You should really dive into Ayreon again. As it is difficult to get so many singers and instrumentalists at one venue at the same time, Arjen could organize only a few live concerts. There are several performances from those to find on KZbin. Arjen and Floor Jansen go way back in their cooperations. In fact it was Arjen who first recognized the potential of Floor and she participated in several of his projects through the years. Since a year and a half KZbin exploded with a enormous number of new reactions to videos with Floor Jansen and Nightwish. At last she deservedly gets some more recognition for the great talent she has. I myself became a Flooraholic in an instant after her mindblowing performances at the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019'. In the Netherlands she was relatively unknown until then. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation she uploaded many interesting videos on her KZbin channel in the last year such as covers, chats, vocal masterclasses and much more. If you didn't already, check it out and unpack some of the presents she left there. Floorgasm alert!

@@MattFarkas It is actually trustTH1 (no space, first t is lower case), and it is extended ASCII, being 8 bit where ASCII is 7 bit. The first and fifth octets are the same and there are only 8 in all - from an IT point of view, this is clean, as it is a total of 64 bits. But Michael Mills' range and harmonies are absolutely insane!

@@jessejamieson7428 I'll see your Windows NT and raise you VAX VMS, ICL VME, UNIX (in a variety of forms and variants) and (for microcomputers) CP/M. Networking included Token Ring, 10Mbit Ethernet, to switched versions up to gigabit on copper and fibre including FDDI (at the hardware level) Oslan, Netware IPX/SPX, Netbeui (yuck), and TCP/IP at the software level (it''s fun trying to run all 4 of those protocol stacks on one 80286 and still have room for Lotus 123). So I have no trouble reading ASCII pretty fluently, both 7bit and extended 8bit versions. I may have built firewalls and servers for government departments on networks which may or may not exist, and if they did I couldn't tell you about them, even if they turned out to be obsolete now. Lots of virtualisation later on (this laptop is only running 5 operating systems concurrently, the PC I'm building will have RAM for lots more [128GB]). And it boots from a RAID5 array of M..2 drives. Of course I run a wide variety of server processes including DNS, DHCP, NTP, AD, DFS, etc. Who doesn't? While able bodied, I freaked out my flying instructor by doing cross wind course correction trigonometry in my head. Apparently that isn't supposed to be possible. But I never infringed airspace I shouldn't, got lost, or had any trouble reaching my destination (or alternate if the meteorologists had been over optimistic in their crystal ball gazing). I guess I have geek running through me like the lettering in a stick of rock candy :-) Asleep yet?

The cool thing about Ayreon is that all the albums sort of tie into the same story. 'The Source' (the album which this song is from) is technically the start of the story. It's about a race of humans that give control of their planet to a computer (the 'frame) to help solve an environmental catastrophe, but the computer determines that the best course of action is to eliminate the humans. Ten humans and the robot TH-1 escape the planet on the only interstellar ship they have (the 'Starblade') along with the ships crew and head to an ocean planet. The chemist creates a drug ('The Source', aka 'Liquid Eternity') that allows them to evolve into an 'aquatic race'. The drug also makes them basically immortal and allows them to communicate telepathically. The album ends with the survivors (ten plus the ships small crew) living on their new planet ('Planet Y') in relative peace, but in the final track we learn that TH-1 is becoming a new version of the 'frame deep in the ocean. The next album in the timeline, 01011001 ('Y') tells us how machines have now taken over this new planet, and the humans have basically merged with the machines are losing their emotions and sense of time. They now call themselves 'The Forever', since they are essentially ageless drones at this point. We also learn about how they seeded a comet with DNA and sent it to Earth, where it creates human life on our planet. The Forever believe they can live through us telepathically and that they may regain their emotions by doing so. Some of The Forever believe that we need to advance more quickly, and use their telepathy to give us medicine/technology, but this results in us advancing quicker than our morality can cope with. Eventually The Forever realize humanity is doomed and has to decide if they will give them the technology to reverse their past mistakes. Somewhere in the timeline sits the album 'The Electric Castle'From a summary by Arjen: "At the end of the journey those that successfully dealt with their personal demons find out that the voice belongs to an alien named 'Forever of the Stars', a member of an alien race living in a distant galaxy. These aliens created planet Earth and its people as an experiment so they could study, and hopefully one day experience emotions, as they themselves lost feelings eons ago." That's only three albums (less than half!) but I believe those three give you a solid foundation for how the story plays out. Also, I highly recommend any of the Electric Castle Live videos; They are just so fun to watch, plus John de Lancie ('Q' from Star Trek) plays the 'Forever of the Stars' character, which Arjen said he originally based on Q.

@@MattFarkas Yeah man, I'm sure you've got a lot of stuff being suggested by Patreons and people in general but definitely revisit them. I grew up listening to Symphony X, heard them first when I was 8 and they're still one of my favorite bands. They have 3-4 era's lets say. The early more neoclassical, then the less neoclassical with more heaviness, then super heavy with Iconoclast and maybe with Underworld a kinda hybrid between Iconoclast and earlier albums. They are definitely a fantastic band and most people that know about them know they're fantastic both as a band and as musicians pretty much like Dream Theater (but for some reason much less publicity) but with a objectively better singer , even though Labrie is still ok, and used to pull of crazy stuff before food poisoning fucked him up. I just know that some people don't like Labrie's style of singing. My point is, don't get discouraged if some part doesn't jive with you. It also helps when we know what you don't like, for example - there is another reactor that likes Symphony X but doesn't like the neoclassical parts or long songs for a first listen, so that knowledge helps us to know what to recommend after 1-2 listens. P.S. if you haven't heard of Riverside, you definitely need to give them a listen, they're a polish prog band that creates nice atmosphere and soundscapes. Their lead guitarist passed away a few years ago, but he was a fantastic example of minimalistic playing that sounds fantastic.

If someone hasn't suggested Porcupine Tree: Anesthetize (Live) yet they should. Unless you are well aware of that slice of pure prog perfection already.

You're about 12 years too late haha. For the first listen at least. I feel like I've seen a live video of Anesthetize before, but it's been a really long time. It's a fantastic song - love that solo from Alex Lifeson!

Good stuff -- one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands. Slight nit, don't mess with the volume as you talk. I want to jam out to the music with you, but the audio change really messes with the flow. If you're super guitar-heavy, I'd suggest Bramfatura by 3. The dude's nuts.

Did he? I missed that. It's certainly an interesting tuning...you'd think the low B string would be able to cover whatever he wanted to do with the dropped D, but it could yield some interesting voicings I guess. Or maybe certain runs he does are easier with the drop D. I don't know, lol.
