To those struggling to beat this stage those drums are operated by your control pad (or control stick if you are playing this on the GameCube). Simply press up and down and the drum bounces and gains more height. You can then use that to either bounce up to higher areas or slip underneath them the latter of which is required to continue the stage. You have been enlightened. Now go young ones and beat this stage and enjoy the one that comes afterwards because it is one of the best stages in the game mostly due to the atmosphere.

I just want to say that, really, it was the first (and I feel like the ONLY) time that one had to actually do that to a 'barrel', and there was of course zero indication of that kind of control being an option. So some people would quite naturally never figure it out until by accident or by looking it up online now. =P Give the people who were stuck on it a break.

I never figured all I had to do in the barrel was press down. Even then, I managed to go through several times by timing my jumps (which took an insane amount of tries, until I got skilled enough to do it without trouble). However, I never did it with Sonic/Tails unless I was playing with my sister, so that one of us could use Tails to move the barrel by jumping on it, while the other waited in order to pass through as soon as there was an opening. And one time, I managed to glitch around as Knuckles and end up there.

For those of you who don't know, the barrel was near the end to the fight with Robotnik. Most people, including myself, did not realize that all you had to do was press up and down. We just jumped up and down lick jackasses. However, my brother and I got through, but it took both of us. I was playing as tails, he was sonic, and we bounced our way past that red and white piece of shit :D

To be honest I didn't figure out the barrel till I was around twelve, which was more than a decade ago. I figured it out by accident when I finally gave up. I sometimes made sonic dance to the music by moving up and down then timing the jumps to the beat of the song. You can guess what happened when the damn barrel moved. I remember crying, followed by praying, then me dropping the controller running to tell my mom that after all these years I finally beat the barrel. Before I had to have to jump up and down with tails and sonic used as weights, so you had tot time the jumps very accurately. Without a number 2 it was very difficult. Somehow the AI in Tails was quicker thus now making the synced jumps harder. So where as I was able to do it on a SEGA Genesis on the Gamecube ( Sonic Mega Collection) it was impossible.; either that or my I couldn't do it as timing the jump for both Sonic and Tails was too tough to figure out with two controllers in both hands. Either way the barrell nevver gave me too much trouble but still figuring it out was like eating meat afte rbeing a vegan for 10 years. Show less REPLY
