It's an ability from the motorcycle type of vehicles. To do it you just need to press Up, Down fast, and after a little animation the character will turbo-boost.

When the game is loading there's always a "Sonic says..." screen that shows some helpful tips. One of them teaches you how to do this. And it works in all versions

Only flaws/downsides to this compared to Sonic Racing Transformed: The Monkey Ball tracks are EVIL! On Grand Prix, the characters are pretty much the same all the time, BORING! Looks alot like Mario Kart There are no Outrun or Daytona cameos
