Okay, grammar novel comin up: 'Majority' is considered a collective noun. That means (in rough terms) that it applies to a group, and can be either singular or plural. What determines this is what the word is applied to. In this case, it's being applied to 'the world,' which is singular. Yeah, yeah, Steven meant 'the people of the world,' but he left out that modifier. If it was 'the majority of the people' then the proper conjugation would be 'are,' yes. But since we're looking at 'the majority of the world,' and the world is a singular entity, 'the majority' becomes singular as well. Think of it like taking a slice out of a pie. You're left with 3/4s of a pie, but it's still one pie. 'The majority of the pie *is* still on the plate.' Grammatically, the world is a single entity, and so the majority of it would still be singular. This gets a tad messy with British English, where groups and teams are often referred to in the singular but given plural conjugation. But I'll assert that if everyone in the call is living in America, then we can probably rule that concern out. 'The majority,' the predicate, is clarified by 'the world,' a singular entity, to be singular, and so 'the majority is idiots' is correct.
