As for the arcade version, it gained a lot of notoriety due to the fact that people were getting injured for punching the pad either too hard, or improperly (i.e. not punching it straight, using hook punches, not using the glove), and it got the attention of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and they pressured Taito to stop distributing the game and discontinue the use of the machines. Taito responded by establishing a recall of the cabinets telling owners that if they didn't comply with the recall, Taito wouldn't be able to fix the cabinet if it was damaged.

I like how this game uses Mode 7 for some background effects instead of just a title screen animation. It's common for a platform game, but for a beat'em up it's very rare. The only other game I know it also uses is Brawl Brothers during a boss fight where he rotates the stage.

Oh Taito. Never change. I remember the Nintendo Power overview/strategy section for this game was unusual because he directly said "although the graphics look good, expect enemy flicker and slow down" in one of the stages, as well as mentioning during the Stage 1 boss strategy that it seemed strange that the background sways but everyone remains motionless. Always stood out to me to see that sorta thing in the game coverage rather than the review, especially in something like Nintendo Power which was pretty rarely "negative" towards a game they dedicated coverage to.

After all these years, I still somehow remember reading that bit about the moving background. They made a few negative comments in their coverage of Road Runner's Death Valley Rally, too.

The Real Puncher was awesome, loved it as a kid, but never made it far, because you need to know how to throw a good punch. Even my Father had hard times with the "hard" levels. The selfie function of this arcade maschine was very funny ,too

Sadly they didn't add Real Puncher stages in the SNES sequel. They could really serve as bonus stages like here.

Never actually played this, but I've ProJared's video on it. He prefers the 2nd game due to it being a lot faster paced than this one. SBM 1 looks... okay. Just okay. Maybe a little more variety would've been nice - Heck, the bonus rounds are just the same game over and over again. Still, it *_does_* amuse me that Sonic Blast Man's answer to _every_ predicament he finds himself in is to punch the daylights out of everything. Presumably murdering them in the process like with the train, truck or even this office building (29:05).
