I think it's because apart from Big, Gamma, and maybe Amy, the player already knows who to expect to be playable when playing Adventure 1: Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. In Chaotix, other than Knuckles the entire playable cast has never been seen before as it's their debut game.

I honestly miss when they used to make hand-drawn art-work for the games, like for SA1, SA2, Chronicles, Advance, Rush, etc. Now it’s just 3D renders of the characters, which doesn’t look bad, but doesn’t have nearly the same amount of charm.

I love the aesthetic of the Japanese covers, it really makes the perfect Japanese character art pop out. Apparently the weird quotes on the boxes are supposed to summarise Sonic's life view and philosophy.

About the EU Sonic 3 cover... I met the artist responsible for the Knuckles art and I bought a print off him at the Summer of Sonic. When I asked him to sign my copy of Sonic 3 he told me that box art is a mis match of different artist's work thrown into one, so him signing it wouldn't do much

I was obsessed with the Shadow the Hedgehog boxart as a kid. I thought the detail and quality of the render was phenomenal, especially for 2005. Shadow having fangs is so cool. It made him stand out more from Sonic and hint at his violent nature....you know, if the explosion and giant gun weren't enough to tip you off. The detail on the Sonic and the Black Knight art is also really amazing. I love the engravings for the gauntlet and sword. Heck, it's nifty they gave Sonic a gauntlet at all!

I'll quote on what it said: "Saw some folks asking for my thoughts on the Sonic Frontiers box art given my previous video about Sonic Box Art. The American and Europe one is pretty good, Sonic's pose is great and I don't think we've seen him grind before on a box which stands out, although I'd be curious in what it would look like if Sonic is looking at the camera, instead of off into nothing; Saying this, I think the Japanese box is 10x better, derivative of Breath of the Wild, but it really sells the Open Zone "Frontiers" angle more than ours."

The pop art in the classic Japanese Box art uses what’s called the “Memphis” design. Quite popular during the 80s and 90s. P.S. it has nothing to do with the city.

Additional info here: Tectoy (Brazil) used the EU box art in Sonic 1,and followed the US pattern after Sonic 2. And they actually re-released both games in the red Mega Drive/Genesis standard template! Sonic 1 had the Master System (It was different from the Game Gear box art) box art,while Sonic 2 retained the original art, just slightly crunched horizontally.

Unleashed is personally my favorite. I love how they play with perspective. Normal Sonic has his leg kicked out in a run, and the Werehog is lunging at the screen with his claws. It tells you what to expect from the gameplay.
