An extended remix of the Good Future theme of Stardust Speedway using just Sonic samples from the classic Genesis games. I also kept the HUE samples intact and a disc scratch sample from Sonic CD. Lets hope a good future without idiotic governments and coronaviruses!

I heard that Sonic 2 originally was gonna introduce the time trace feature from Sonic CD. So now I have this feeling that maybe Stardust Speedway was also originally gonna be in Sonic 2.

I think it might’ve been inspired by scrapped stage, mostly because it’s the most different zone in CD design-wise (no distinct shape, even though PP had triangles, CC had squiggly lines, TT had circles, etc)

It’s more complicated than that. Stardust Speedway was never going to be in Sonic 2 since they were developed by completely different teams in different parts of the world. Early on Sonic 2’s levels were going to be framed within a time travel context, but it wasn’t planned as an actual mechanic like it is in CD; you simply would play through the game linearly and certain levels would be previous levels in different eras. Remnants of this are still in the game, like Hill Top Zone, which is a prehistoric past version of Emerald Hill (hence why they share some art assets). When the team realized they weren’t going to be able to include all originally planned zones within the deadline Sega imposed on them, they excised this narrative framing. So no, Stardust Speedway was never going to be a Sonic 2 level. Like many other levels in CD, it’s actually meant to be a psychedelic reimagining of a Sonic 1 level - in this case, Starlight Zone
