Lemme guess: all the Sonic clones are born by absorbing a very small amount of energy of the original. Too many of them exhaust the original and if he dies all the clones fall as well. To avoid this (as hinted twice) the original must touch every clone to get the energy back. Tails should totally build some kind of tracking device

Theory: It takes a bit of your life force to summon a clone every single time... by the end of the video, the original sonic is almost about to die or is in a lobotimized state because of him almost having no life force left. In order for sonic to fully recover, he MUST reabsorb the clones by coming into contact with them.

I'm fascinated with the story here. Like what I'm seeing with the comments about the ring/band duping sonic, and want to give my thought. I would say it's using sonics speed to create something close to a time double. I say this with the first sonic clone was shown to trail behind the original after the ring activated, being later than the original with becoming real after sonic slowed down at his house. Another point is how the copy only had a brief memory of recent events, while the original sonic still had the memory about picnicking with Amy.
