This is slightly disappointing. I expected in keeping with the whole 'war for the planet' theme that these were additional missions that had some purpose towards the actual war effort, saving civillians, contacting military units in hiding to get them on board, destroying Eggman's supply stashes or reinforcements. These are just basically additional stages to run, devoid of context.

Not everything needs to be part of the story. Some things can exist just for fun.

@@mariobroultimate1808 It would have been no harder to give the bonus stages context, running to warn a resistance cell that they're about to be raided, carrying vital intelligence to get back to the main HQ... You get the idea. It would make them feel more organic, rather than tacked on.

@@stainlesssteelfox1 They could do that, but it's not like they need to. Again, some things can exist just for fun. Also, doing these missions extends the control of the world percentage beyond 100, and yet Eggman still has %0.01, so it was never meant to make sense anyways. Plus, it's not like Sonic hasn’t had non-context courses before. Levels in Colors can sometimes be remixed versions of levels we've been to before even though there's no reason to go back. Not everything needs context, it's just for fun.
