The fact that the game director took a look at a long Twitter thread offering constructive criticism for how to revamp the final boss so it wouldn't suck, and said "Those are some great ideas, I'm going to see what we can do about that," makes me feel so very optimistic for the DLC.

@@sheepertheclassical6597 I know Premydaremy linked it in the description of one of his videos on Kishimoto's tweets. But it wasn't too remarkable. The guy had a whole wattpad laundry list that wasn't necessarily the best direction to take the final boss, and had some opinions conflicting general reception (like saying The End's music sucked). But I don't think the devs even need to listen to feedback for stuff like that. They didn't just run out of ideas, they _had_ big plans for a cool final boss, but didn't have enough resources so they compromised

I see a lot of people coming to the conclusion that they're ABSOLUTELY going to change the final boss because of that thread and I wish they had the common sense to realize that's not how this stuff works If I see people getting mad over something they weren't actually promised when the dlc comes out I'll be upset

1:52 Frontiers was written english-first. One of the main criticisms of Japanese players is that SEGA was unable to translate Flynn's writing properly, so a bunch of stuff is changed and awkwardly spoken as if Sonic had eaten a grammar textbook for breakfast

Dude I'm gonna be quite honest. I've never heard of you, never seen any of your videos. I'm always interested in what people thought of Sonic Frontiers, so despite the 70-minute runtime, I thought I'd give it a background watch. 20 minutes in, and I checked the runtime to see how I was doing. _I had been watching for 55 minutes._ Your writing and delivery were so engaging that not only was I *actively* watching the video that whole time and not leaving it on in the background like I had intented to do, but I had entered a time vortex where my enjoyment of the video was warping the spacetime continuum itself, dialating the way minutes passed around me. I was engaged the entire time, breathed outward forcefully through my nose at multiple points, and even recommended the video to like 6 of my friends directly. If this is the kind of stuff you put out on the regular, I'm 100% on board. Please narrate my life. SUBSCRIBED

1:52 Ian Flynn didn’t rewrite for the English script, he actually did a lot more! For this game, they had Ian Flynn write the story, and then they translated it from English to other languages I believe. Ian was given the foundation of the story (like what characters are involved, the setting, etc.) by Sonic Team, and he had to write around this foundation and turn it into a fitting story.
@andreou2473
@andreou2473 Жыл бұрын
I dont belive this is correct actually. He did create the English script as the 'prime' script to be translated, and he was a story contributor. But Sonic Team's story division is largely responsable for all the narrative beats, chapters, pacing etc. He was given free reign to write and expand all aspects of story to adhere to the franchise better, and wrote all the dialogue. But he is not the credit for "Story By:"

Not quite, he was pretty limited. They didn't just tell him the characters and setting but the basic plot, what beats it needed to hit, and other stuff. That's why the entire ending reveal was really dumb though not to discredit Ian cause the dialogue is the best we've ever seen from a Sonic game and he was 100% responsible for that. (seriously Sage I don't care how many simulations you ran if you just told Sonic you trapped his friends in Cyberspace to protect them and told Sonic that the voice that has been speaking to him is an entity of mass destruction he would have listened. He from start to finish just wanted answers and was willing to co-operate)

@Alcralix Scripwriter, actually, which was the point that they were clarifying. While Flynn did the actual scripting, he was given the plot structure and characters by SEGA. It should be said that this is absolutely NOT meant to underplay his role in the writing of the game, just that it was still SEGA's plot outline, which he brought to life. Source: Flynn did a few pre-release interviews explaining the process.

What really bothered me about Corrupt Sonic is that every character who was trapped in Cyberspace was forced to reflect on their past. Everyone was in some type of nightmare and Tails even encountered another version of himself who said he was just follower. It would've been a perfect moment for Sonic to reflect on himself, just like everyone else did. From the moment he entered Cyberspace, he was able to escape with ease, but when he finally got trapped, he was freed in a matter of seconds.... atleast give us a fight against an alternate Sonic or something...

Frontiers, to me, feels like what Unleashed was when it was first released. It's a new take on Sonic gameplay, and the ambition to shake things and put so much faith into it is commendable. However, it does has a few kinks that keeps it from being truly great, at least in my eyes. For what it's worth, I'm hoping that Sega/Sonic Team will look at the pros and cons of this game, and take measures to improve and refine the formula once the next game comes out.

@@kingbash6466 People were fatigued of Sonic at the time specifically after the 06, so it makes sense why Unleashed received mediocre reviews. Sonic Frontiers came after a dry spell lots of people were looking forward to what Sonic Team came up with. I still feel Frontiers falls short overall. It does have some strong elements ( writing, super sonic, music, and the titan fights) but visually, gameplay, and core mechanics need a serious re haul. Unleashed has flaws but are very minor ie sonic's handling, etc, but the game is still very solid even to this day. The good news seems to be that Sonic Team has acknowledged some of the criticism so we'll see what happens in the DLC and a possible patch for the final boss.

As everyone has said, Chaos island goes NUTS with 2D segments. It's like 50% 2D. It feels like a different game made with the same engine. And then Rhea island has lots of bits that seem like they aught to be guided or automated to match the rest of the game, but they just aren't, and I wonder if, like, the person or people working on it wasn't really sure how everyone else was handling these types of areas.

My favorite part of this game are all the little animation details in Sonic. The way he lands on his hands after jumping from a rail to a platform in Cyberspace, the glowing sparks under Sonic's feet when he grinds on the rails, the way he slides when the player quickly changed into the opposite direction when he's at top speed, the way he progressively gets more and more exhausted and tired, it's all so incredible. Finally a Sonic that feels like heat truly getting his ass kicked by the circumstances (at least till the final island). It's great. Edit: The sights and sounds update also allows you to update your speed and ring capacity all at once thank fucking GOD. Edit 2: THEY ADDED BOOST JUMPING LET'S FUCKING GOOOOO

A few more honorable mentions: If you hold down the boost button without moving, then Sonic will crouch down as if he's ready to start sprinting at a moment's notice. Also, if you make him run in tight enough circles on flat ground without pressing any buttons, then he will put a hand low to the ground as if to keep his balance. Sonic can kick flip off walls or other vertical surfaces instead of running head long into them. Unleashed had Sonic slam into walls and flatten against them like a Loony Toons character before falling backward (but only while boosting, I think). I personally like the kick flip. It looks cool, and it could hint at Sonic being more experienced at avoiding harming himself when encountering a surprise obstacle.

In a way, your line delivery reminds me of Scott the Woz, amazing punchlines. Now I JUST got frontiers for Christmas and am going to 100% it… and honestly it’s not that bad on the switch. Despite its stuttering and LAUGHABLE draw distance such as not being able to see bushes three feet just front of you and collectibles being nigh impossible to see if they’re not directly in front of you I still found myself in awe of what I was looking at, as a sonic newcomer this was honestly a great first impression on the series, and I want to catch up on lost time in the fandom because of how impressive this game’s scope was even on a barely optmimized console that’s 7 years old by now. And honestly I do agree with basically all of your critiques, and I found your lines insanely relatable as someone who came into the game spectacularly spoiler-free. Including the Squid and brandead Chaos Island’s… everything, it gave me a sense of “yep, you’re not alone in your experience” and that is comforting as hell! Big on how they mishandled Sonic’s cyberdeath. Rhea Island nearly haunted me as Sonic grew rapidly worse island after island, cutscene after cutscene. It was HEARTWRENCHING even if I didn’t know him that much, the angst potential was there! But no, prayer circle! Also, the lack of boss fight dialogue disappointed me. I idolize Unleashed even if I haven’t played it and the final boss back and forths were amazing to watch. Even more so as I was playing on normal which revealed to me The End as either being 1. Bullet Hell with an admittedly epic song and monologue 2. A glorified QTE

Honestly around 9:30 in the video is one of the most important discussions I've ever heard finally consciously brought up when discussing video games. How does the game feel and look when You're Actually The One Playing. Of course it's easy to see things and think "wow that looks kinda stupid" if you're only seeing it on KZbin or watching a friend play it but when you're the one actually holding the controller, it's an entire different thought process, you're in a different state of mind, YOU'RE the one behind the way trying to figure out what and how the game wants to show you in its world. Of course, rn I've only reach 9:30 in the video but I've seen enough game reviews over the years to the point where this is one of the few genuinely new things I've ever actually heard someone bring up so I wanted to just commend you for it real quick before I forget and then continue the video

God I love your editing style. The jokes are quick and snappy, don't drag on too long like a lot of KZbinrs, and they're few and far between so they're always funny with their timing. Excellent review too obviously and I agree with most pretty much all of it, but I just wanted to point that out.

Upgrading Speed actually does a lot more than just upgrade your wall climbing speed. In fact, the only things it DOESN'T upgrade is your normal running speed, air movement speed, slide speed, and Power Boost speed. It DOES upgrade: -Wall Climb Speed -Regular Boost Speed (at Lv. 99, it will give you permanent Power Boost - Lv. 98 makes the normal boost almost as fast as Power Boost) -Air Boost Speed -The initial burst of speed from a Drop Dash, and it will also soften the resistance from an upward slope -Attack Speed Personally, I actually think the Drop Dash and Air Boost in particular feel great at a higher speed level, enough to make me wish there was a New Game+ mode with beefed up enemies since the movement is INSANELY fun at Lv. 99.

I have a theory about 1-2 and why it has a more challenging s rank. When you beat the game it opens the challenge mode. So you can go back and reply all the cyber space levels (even the ones you didn't play) and one thing I noticed was that the s ranks are more challenging like 1-1 went from needing to get under a minute to under something like 45 seconds. So they probably accidentally gave 1-2 its challenge time in the regular game.

Fun Facts that I discovered in Frontiers: you can skip over the skill refresh in cyberspace, and in the rest of the game I suppose, by bouncing (holding the Stomp button), meaning that, when you go back into the air, you can do as many air boost as you are able to, and cover much more ground. I call this technique, the "Bounce-Refresh" (if you come up with a better name for it, let me know). An interesting combat trick that I figured out was to cancel other moves with a quick dodge roll, allowing you to chain other combos. This is specially fun to me during my second playthrough, where I didn't level up Sonic's stats at all, which I do recommend to do after beating the game.

The End boss probably could have worked as a bullet hell if it used the presentation of Sin & Punishment rather than Ikaruga, staying third person and having the controls of Super Sonic would have gone a long way for keeping it in line with the rest of the game. I actually like the battle mechanically but it really feels like a sidequest they moved to the climax because they didn't have the time to make a proper final phase, then locked it behind Hard Mode so casual players wouldn't have to deal with it.

In regards to Giganto's lasers turning on halfway through the battle: It's supposed to make him more difficult to Cyloop. You CAN Cyloop the bosses, after all, and it's actually one of the most effective ways to deal damage. Puts them in a long stun so you can wail on them.

To me, Frontiers is yet another display of the Blue Blur's extrarodinary power: there have been frequent times where he's fallen upon taking incorrect steps, and takes a thrashing in popularity because of said wrong step. But then, out of the immense darkness, he comes back, showing us time and time again he's capable of surviving destruction. I don't hate Forces, but I love Frontiers. Ian writing the story was an awesome choice. Feels like an actually correct decision, opposed to say, scrapping ideas, changing team members frequently, rushing games to market, the Shadow game, Free Riders...! Getting sidetracked... The music once again rocks the eardrum to eternal pleasure. The action setpieces are awesome and the game's lore is well-needed. And it's agreed that Super Sonic is the most badass element of the game. Now, is Frontiers perfect? Obviously not. No video game is ever that. Gameplay's klunky. Optimization's an issue. The story falls flat at the end. Cyberspace uses old stages...AGAIN. But the fact that Frontiers is getting unironically positive press, with no overwhelming hate, ire and scorn...is awesome enough to me. It's just...a breath of fresh air, in many ways. So yeah, let's not hate the effort, instead think of improvements in the future. Create more fresh locations to run around in. Give the extra cast more to do. Fully optimize the next title. Continue the action setpieces. And keep Ian on board to write the next game.

55:17 I'm sure this has probably been brought up a bunch of times by now, but I might as well chime in: your speed level isn't just climbing speed. It also increases your base (i.e. non-Power) grounded Boost speed, Air Boost distance (regardless of ring count) and Drop Dash charge rate. What it doesn't affect is your Power Boost speed since that automatically gives you level 99 speed, but even in that state it *does* still make the Air Boost go further and still lets the Drop Dash charge faster.

On Rings in Sonic hack and slash: Bring back the Unleashed Ring Energy meter. It shows your Speed, amount of rings, and it could turn the boost bar into a health bar or something along those lines. This'd fit the spedometer, ring count, top speed and health into the bottom left corner (or top right or whatever) freeing up more of the screen and making more sense. Or maybe rings would convert into health when an enemy is alerted, more visibly showing you when an enemy sees you, and also could change the way damage is dealt for battles. So you still have the ring crutch for boosting around, but when fighting you just have a classic health bar MGR style. Or just make MGR 2 with Sonic as the protagonist. Because that would be awesome.

Considering how much playtesting they did, I have to wonder if the parry originally did need timing until they saw playtesters either constantly failing with it or not using it. And having cringed while watching some streamers fight Giganto and not parry, I can understand that. The devs probably kept those parry challenges around just to remind players that they have a parry.
