Out of the whole S3&K soundtrack, Flying Battery is my favourite. The other tracks are great but they are ambience, the character of the zone - which is fine, but Flying Battery is the only track which is commenting on your actions as Sonic. You can hear the Doppler-drone on the bass line around 0:11 - it reminds me of an alarm or siren wailing and spinning, the Battery is on red alert. You're not just progressing through a zone and having random encounters on the way you feel on a mission, as though you're proactively taking the fight to Robotnik and leading an attack on one of his castles.

Somewhat unrelated, but I highly recommend you check out the Dreams Come True discography. Masato Nakamura never lost it. Every album since Sonic 1 & 2 has had bits that would make for great Sonic tracks. Dude should've been Sonic's Koji Kondo.

From what I’ve heard he got fired after making the soundtrack for sonic 3 and knuckles for wanting a raise and keeping the royalties for the songs, which is another factor as to why sega was risky when it came to rereleasing the games

He’s the reason why there are so many issues with copyrights when it comes to getting games re-released. Example: Green Hill and Chemical Plant was not included in the official Mania Soundtrack release for this reason. To another user talking about S3&K, For Sonic 3 tho, that issue is due to the Michael Jackson controversy and Sega wanting to remove any hint he made the tracks. Sega has issues basically. Makes you wonder if these contributed to the downfall of their console business (not entirely, but helped it along).

@@deserted4ever Nakamura actually didn’t do a single thing for sonic 3 or s & k, so that has nothing to do with sonic 3s rerelease issues. It’s true he wanted to charge too much for royalties and stuff, but that was immediately following sonic 2.

It's using "lock-on technology". This shit blew my mind as a kid. Then I realized they didn't have enough time and space to squish it all into one cartridge, so they used it as the next big thing, even though it was a knock-off, making parents buy two separate games just to enjoy the full experience.
