I feel like there are a lot of issues besides grammar and things that I missed in the video so I thought I'd clear up a few things and questions people have: ''why doesn't hero just release the source code he had for ph2 since he's not using it anymore?" there are a few reasons for this. the biggest one is that hero wants to see his vision realized into a full game before releasing any of his previous versions since despite the differences, it is still the same game. released frameworks like bumper or infinity engine usually only get about one game using the framework to it's full potential out of countless ports of older levels. I understand the need for a framework with better physics and controls. I recommend checking this project out for that.: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGfTYa1mdt-gnM0 ''why didn't hero say anything about this beforehand?'' now this goes into something I forgot to mention. one of the reasons he didn't make a statement until after the fact on twitter is because the project at that current version was leaked by people angry at the change so he was forced to show what he had at the time. this also goes into why I talked about the backlash in the video . ill admit I didn't use the best examples of that and I apologize to anyone who felt misrepresented. ill also admit that hero made a few missteps in communication in not stating his intentions more clearly from the start. "if he always wanted an OVA style, why didn't he just do that from the start? when it comes to fangames, making a custom model takes some time. unleashed and gens models are easy to take and put into fangames which is why you usually see the same modern model in fangames. though I'm not sure about ph1, ph2 was just a showcase of the new move set, but its high quality presentation with modern assets is probably why it felt so much like a modern game. not to mention him only stating that everything could change in the description not the main video. I will also like to point out that using spyro wasn't the best example for my "sonic drought" point since sonic is more important to sega as a company than spyro is to activision. i just found it odd to claim to be in a drought with just one year without a game when games take a long time to make and tsr got criticism for feeling unfinished plus content besides games where still being pumped out. also people were claiming it doesn't matter to wait for good quality since forces had 4 years and was still bad. if you have more questions or criticisms, comment below and I will try to answer them. thank you for watching the video and have nice day.

@gold bone People are tried of the drought because the last modern game that should have had a big impact on the series’ gameplay and world was so underwhelming and did not meet our expectations from the trailers. You should always look at context, even if Spyro was as big as Sonic, they hadn’t had a bad stain on the series, whereas SEGA has something they need to fix and address so people are anxious if they will actually improve. We shouldn’t be expected to get any old game and be satisfied for a long time, it needs to be fun in the first place, so understandably people want to see the series’ new direction soon.

They don’t dislike the artstyle, they just thought the modern versions had a lot more potential to have an impact on the series.

The removal of Knuckles' punches is the biggest loss imo. There are plenty of opportunities to use that elsewhere, like punching through walls to get into a route just for him.

I’m sure hero has already thought of that. The punch feature isn’t permanently removed and he will probably do something to keep the move’s usefulness like make knuckles automatically punch a secret wall like in s3&k

I like it a lot. Personally, I've thought for a while that the only realistic way to do attacks in multi-character Sonic games is for each one to have a homing attack. I'm hoping Hero adds Knuckles' forward drill spin as a homing attack.

Hmm. I've been thinking about this, and I suppose it could be seen as organic if fast flight was active in Tails's solo gameplay but flight dash is available in gameplay where he carries at least 1 other character or a heavy object. Heck, that even gives me an idea of having Tails throw objects! That would be neat & seems fluid the way I'm imagining it playing out

I agree with all this, and i actually think you skimmed over something. I think one of the biggest reasons that people are mad with Hero's decisions is because we have a huge surplus of 3d Classic Sonic games. Games like Utopia, islands, and Robo Blast 2 are all games that have done this before. I think the reason they are "tired" of Classic Sonic is because most think that that gameplay has already reached it's full potential. That brings me to my second point. There are not enough Modern Fan games, or at least amazing Modern games. Shadow of Water, Grand Tour, and infinity engine plus all have done great jobs polishing Modern Sonic to be the most enjoyable way of playing. But then came Project Hero Ph2, The game that seemed to finally PERFECT Modern Sonic (at least the adventure style). But to see that modern perfection relegated to become another 3d Classic came, a lot fans think it is some huge missed potential. Personally, i think this is a good step forward. It feel like Hero is finally embracing its own identity, separate from the other Sonic fan games. And I can understand why you might be angry or disappointed with these changes. But we should appreciate what we receive, and not chastise the creators for what could have been. This goes to both the fan devs AND Sega. Thank you for coming to my Tedtalk.

You basically described the feelings that I couldn't put into words. Also Sonic World, Sonic Souls are other great 3D sonic fan games that where basically completed. Eh, not personally a fan of the change in art style simply based on the fact that it's been done to death in the Sonic fangame community. Utopia, Freedom, RoboBlast 2, Islands, all of these took the OVA direction. It's nothing new. It's one of the best designs for Sonic, true, but it's just a case of oversaturation. But besides that, the project stands on its gameplay merits, and it's still the best system out there. Regardless of the art direction, this is still looking really solid.

Tbf, what we had wasn't really anything. It was just a gray test level with models for the most part ripped from the original games. While it's easy to be dissapointed because it's no longer modern sonic, I don't think it's a step down since there really was not much to step down from in terms of aesthetic. As for gameplay, I guess saying it's a step down makes sense. Though it just seems like he's removing unnecessary moves to remove bloat. So to me it's a step up imo.

I do not agree with this sentiment, messing around with so many mechanics in the prototype was really fun, but I never saw the project as being much more than that, and managing all that stuff into a cohesive experience would be a real headache. We have less mechanics sure, but now they're all focused on momentum, which means that the fun of the game will come from how we use those mechanics to approach the level design, it reminds me a lot of Super Mario 64, few mechanics but all versatile, well polished, and with purpose, PH2 was a cool prototype but PH3 looks like it's shaping up to be a good game, but we'll see.

@@deanmoriarty6015 yes but there were also moves that broke the flow and others that did the same thing as other moves but less efficiently, the current moveset is smaller but easier to understand and versatile enough to make up for the lack of previous moves, while in PH2 many moves were interchangeable and there wasn't really any reason to pick one over the other, not saying PH2 was bad, it did what a prototype had to do, give the devs room for experimentation and an idea of how they want their game to turn out, and they decided they wanted a classic Sonic structure in 3D, they could've probably left, or changed a few features to justify their presence, but if the devs felt like the many features were bogging them down, they did well by cutting them, shit gets cut out during the pipeline there isn't much you can do.

Tbh I think the problem was the sudden change. For the longest time PH was a 3D Sonic game with the “modern” design until what seemed to be a couple months ago and while I’m personally fine with the change. It would’ve been nice to get a heads up before hand instead of tweeting about it when this version is most likely half way complete. Still excited though so I can’t wait to see people play it.

Modern Sonic has a stigma on him. Whether his green eyes or him being connected to the downfall of sonic in the 3D era. The 2010 era of sonic was also kind of lacking. Sure some good ones but mostly bland or meh games. I think the reason why people get upset over classic and modern thing is because Classic sonic always gets a lot more love in the fan game community. Its rarer to see Modern Sonic love due to most preferring classic. However for those who like the modern design, its a kick in the nuts.

Thanks for putting this video out there, I didn't realize the Project Hero was still going on. The art style change is intriguing, though I think it could still use a few more tweaks - something about Sonic just looks kind of... wrong, but I can't put my finger on _what._ It might be some minor proportion or color thing. The project looks great, but I'm tired of seeing Green Hill used as the graphic for all of these fan games. Hopefully, we'll get some more enemy variety as well. Egg Pawns seem a little _too_ useful as enemies, since they're pretty much all I see in these games. 7:50 Read what they're saying: another Classic Sonic _fan_ game. So many fangames like Sonic Utopia do the "Classic Sonic but 3D" thing, and a lot of people are tired of it for the same reason they don't want Classic Sonic to be shoved into every mainline Modern Sonic game. A lot of people were excited for Modern to get a high-profile spotlight, and probably feel robbed. 8:35 These people are expecting a _mainline_ Sonic game, since those seem to come out in relatively short intervals. They probably just don't know or care about the side media. Also, Spyro fans are probably used to waiting a long time between games, much like Metroid fans; you don't see Metroid fans complaining about a drought because they're used to waiting for 3-5 years between games. I think that the people complaining about a "Sonic drought" are being kind of dumb and impatient, but that's the viewpoint they come from.

But anyways, clearly fans are putting out game demos that people find more fun and fluid than Sega's own Modern Sonic games published recently. So while Sega has been in decline in terms of Modern Sonic standards, fan projects have increasingly realized that formula, and the attention and appreciation that PH2 got is a testament to that. Plus, as you've pointed out, Sega's own home staff fail to make Classic Sonic gameplay as good as, (and have been stood up by) Sonic Mania and those brought in or involved with that game's development. So to paint this picture of these fans is not only ignorant, but moreso inconsiderate. Obviously this is not to justify anything or to say that it's a healthy behavior for fans to carry out, it's just to correct/answer to the fallacies in these comments here in particular (I have to say this, because people in this part of the Sonic community who are actively involved in this stuff apparently don't understand otherwise). Also yes, there are fans that want another Sonic game period regardless, but this portrayal of the fans by you guys as impatient is quite a disingenuous & tarnishing one. I think that the negative hate toward Hero for the decisions he made for his own game is ridiculous. However I just get this feeling of "ah well" from the change in design. I personally thought that in ph2 he was attempting to unify the "adventure era" gameplay with the "modern era" artstyle, which Sega tried to achieve when they debuted sonic into 3D in the first place. Again I'm not saying that the change was bad, I love sonic OVA after all and I will probably love playing it. But when I do try the demo, in the back of my head I'll still be thinking "man we were this close to getting a true adventure successor". Obviously Hero isn't the perfect developer so Sega shouldn't "hire this man", but I will say Project Hero demo 2 was one of the fan games that I feel was closest to "official quality". Constant praise isn't the best thing to give to a developer but I don't think I could have given him anything else.

7:46 i don't believe these people are 'angry'. if you read these messages, they're all simply saying 'i don't like this art style, but good luck to the developer'. while your concerns are founded, please do recognise that most of these people seem to be very respectful about this, and there is nothing wrong with voicing an opinion while upholding decorum. people just prefer the modern sonic design - not for any intricate, or underlying reason - but merely because they just like it better. hero should be allowed to pursue the route that he wants, but in turn, people voicing distaste is just a natural course of consumerism

now I will admit that one of my biggest regrets with my video was that it was rushed. I wanted to get the vid out as fast as possible so I ended up taking a lot of responses that weren't actually hateful and instead people who were just a little upset. it's just that the whole reason we even see as much as we do with the new version of the project is because people leaked it due to being angry with the change. hero was forced to reveal the new version and when he did, people where saying it's "just a utopia clone now" and saying "this used to be good and now it's just another 3D classic sonic game". some where saying hero tricked them even though hero didn't know it was a big deal. . it all kinda ticked me off because it was such a trivial reason to undermine hero's hard work and it made me want to address it while making the video, but my need to get the vid out so quickly made me call out the wrong people. that section wasn't directed to those just saying they didn't prefer the look but to people who were insulting him for it

I think this is a big step up. According to gameplay, every change except for Tail's air attack looks better. Though at the same time the removed moves kind of gave the characters more personality with Tails using a mechanical bomb and knuckles punching. Though gameplay I think the Spin dash is more than enough with speed and combat ability for a movement-focused game.. The style is what I'm split on. There are impressive Modern projects but this game might have previously had the most potential but as a fan game it still looks like one of the best. But at the same time, I think it does stand out from 3d classic sonic fan games and makes it look unique from other projects. I'm fine with it as it is. You got close with the problems people have with this and while I am still looking forward to the project over-all, this new direction has soured my taste. But allow me to explain why as I feel this will be pretty relatable for many. For years all Sonic fan games were, was 2D games that took major inspiration from the classics and nothing else. There’s a huge stigma against “modern Sonic” and has been for years now. I was born in ‘97 and my first Sonic game was Sonic Adventure. All throughout my childhood we got at least one game a year and even if they weren’t always knocking it out of the park, it was still something. Then in 2010, Sega decided to go Meta and learned all the wrong lessons from the failure of ‘06. Especially those of us that grew up with “modern Sonic” have felt incredibly shafted by the franchise as a whole and Sega/Sonic Team as a company. No more stories and characters that actually have heart, gravitas, and are worth a damn, no more original ideas cause god forbid we should take any more risks, constant nostalgia pandering with “not having to play as Sonics friends” still being a selling point since 2007. It was new with Secret Rings. Now it’s just old-hat. My personal favorite Sonic fan game (and tbh pretty much favorite Sonic game in general given the current state of the franchise) is called Sonic World. This is a game where the characters have their modern designs (though you can also choose classic characters) and essentially all play like Sonic with some extra bells and whistles. Getting rid of something like knuckles punching or tails bombs because “you could just as easily roll” to me is really bad reasoning. Sure I could just as easily roll but by that logic what’s the point in putting multiple combos in fighting games if just one will get the job done? Small as they may be, these are details that differentiate the characters from Sonic while still keeping the core gameplay. And it shows a little about their character through attacks and animations like that as well. Knuckles punches because his name’s knuckles and it’s what he does. Similar to tails and his tail attack. Sonic kicks because he uses his feet to fight mainly which makes sense (Sonic smack down does this really well). Shadow uses chaos abilities like chaos spear because he’s the ultimate life form and he can. Amy has a hammer, etc. Removing these things (small as they may seem) actually have a big impact on the over-all game. The reality is people are upset because this isn’t the same game as project Hero anymore. Project Hero was the best elements of Modern Sonic, tails, and knuckles (with classic elements like shields as well) perfected. Sure, keep the boost out cause the more open level layout is a lot more fun anyway. But Project Hero went from being something many fans have been wanting for a long time (basically it played like how I’d think SA3 should minus the x-treme gear being used at free will) and turned it into yet another classic fan project. I don’t know if betrayed is the right word. But I’ll put it this way. If people backed this with money on Patreon or something, they’d have every right to get their money back. Personally, I don’t hate the new direction and essentially see it as classic properly done in 3D. But you’re only fooling yourself to call it anything else. I like the OVA design and the cell-shading looks great. But for me, Sonic World still has this beat as the best Sonic fan game in my opinion with Sonic GT being a close second. But hey, it’s Hero’s project so he can do what he likes. Just don’t be surprised when people respond negatively to such dramatic changes.

Tbh your logic for the extra abilities isn’t that good either. Fighting games have multiple attacks so you can string them together and use them for different situations. I get the bomb thing because it is a projectile and that could be useful in a few circumstances, but in a momentum based game where things like time affect your score, having the bomb in particular would probably slow you down rather than keep you moving.

Knuckles on the other hand only has punches, and really what’s the point of being able to combo through enemies who only needs touch from a roll? The only thing useful about those was the uppercut, and you can now do that from an underground launch from an underground launch instead, so there genuinely isn’t anything worthwhile than the fact that it’s unique to knuckles, and honestly we don’t really need that. The game has idle animations, run animations, and knuckles can already climb and glide. Knuckles is already a uniquely styled character. Same for Tails with the ability to fly. I also want you to know that I actually prefer modern sonic more than the classic iteration, but from a gameplay perspective, this just makes more sense. Last thing I wanna say is that, you’re Patreon point: What’s up with that. Like seriously, what’s your point there, he literally is not allowed to put the game on Patreon. There’s a reason it’s a fan game. Also it’s a demo, it’s not even a scam, as it’s not the full version. What was your point making that sentence. I genuinely want more context so I can understand where you were/are coming from.

The one thing I'll say is, Hero doesn't necessarily deserve the backlash he got, but you don't implement modern Sonic controls, attract attention from fans who appreciate this development, then proceed to simply scrap it all because you feel it's too useless a gameplay concept (without anticipating backlash). I will admit Hero definitely made a few missteps in communication. he gave a heads up about the change on his discord but not on his Twitter nor with a community post on youtube. then he gave an explanation on his Twitter, but no vid update on his youtube I guess Hero underestimated how much people cared about the original aesthetic. he got a lot of criticism about how the moves would work from a gameplay standpoint so I assumed he would end up simplifying them. I'll admit the simplifying *does* look like a step down at the first view. in his eyes he was just trying a bunch of random stuff to get a feel for what would work but he blew up into fame before he could finish that process. fan devs usually use modern sonic before they have a clear vision because they are easy to rip from games but not everyone is gonna know that.

Honestly I don't see why people are giving hate on hero's project, I understand that people like sonic's modern design and that an artstyle for a game is what sets the feel and for some people the appeal of the game and it's okay to be disappointed that the design you want isn't being used but there's a difference between Criticism and just flat out hate and complaining, some people saying that the game is now gonna he bad or that the game was ruined or that it's a downgrade is both unfair and dumb, I get that it isn't exactly original but it is his vision and what he wants to do with the fan game he's making. People hating on his project just because of an artstyle change are a bit petty and instead of commending him for his hard work and moving on since the artstyle is a big enough issue to make you not play it, you comment hateful comments because he didn't make what you expected or wanted. It's one of the reasons why some modern sonic games fall flat or don't get love put into them, fans constantly complaining and demanding something and sega trying to answer all those complaints leads to sega focusing less on realising a vision that they're passionate about and more about trying to impress everyone by using nostalgia or trying to impress fans of each era at the same time, hero has a vision, wanting to create a fun experience with his favorite artstyle for sonic, he was never aiming to create the best modern sonic experience, just the best sonic experience he could make and it seems like he's doing just that, he's passionate about the project he's creating and I don't think it's fair that he gets hated or irrelevant criticism for that especially since this isn't even an official game, it's a fan game that you don't even have to pay for, if the artstyle is that big if a deal that the game isn't worth playing despite the quality then move one since there are other options like Sonic gt as an example.

It's so impressive the amount of work gone into this, but I personally am sick of the classic sonic references. If hero doesn't like PH2 and wants to go with this direction maybe give someone else PH2 and have them use the engine to make a full fangame. Either way, Hero has really made something incredible.

(If you’re reading this Hero) I actually like it, but coming from a modern fan, this really changes the identity from PH2. That’s like making Sonic Unleashed 2, but with Classic Sonic and changing the realistic looking style to a more wacky cartoon style. And I have no issue with a cartoony style Sonic game. You could just make PH3 into something separate so people wouldn’t associate the two, but then again you would get hate for abandoning PH2 for a new project. At the end of the day it’s your project and nobody has any say in your decisions! It’s what makes you happy!

You noticed that ova knuckles have different color boots? i mean instead of being red with yellow "lines" and green sock there are yellow with red "lines" and green socks. And if you ask me i think that the persons that put the technic color to the "cartoon" got confused and put the colors of the boots in the wrong wah but i glad that they put the boots color wrong because now we can draw ova knuckles withouth the hat and the people can know that is ova knuckles because the shoes!

Love what I'm seeing here, but frankly, as someone who first heard about this change on twitter without this much background, it's pretty easy to assume the worst. Generations was the beginning of the nostalgia trip SEGA got high off of, not mania, and that was in 2011. Which then carried over to Lost World and onward. Someone in your position doesn't have a good idea of what that time was like for someone who isn't in your position. I'm happy with this direction for the game, but to say that the concerns were unwarranted is pretty damn ignorant. Also, we have spellcheck now, you should use it.

I won't be afraid to say that i completely disagree with this choice. I miss what we had, the whole Modern setting and the movesets. This is a huge degradation of it all. I get he can do what he wants with it because it's his game (i expect to be attacked by 4971248712 people after posting this because the day he announced these changes in the discord servers NO ONE could complain or else they would be crucified.) but i seriously wish he kept things like they were. Why? Why so suddenly? I don't know if i'm interested in the project anymore. It was something so unique and this is just disappointing. I wish he just made them separate and kept going with the Modern one at least, or made it an option. Yeah it was a similar thing with me when I found out he changed the art style, the game in ph 2 looked amazing with high quality models and fluent movement (well except for the spin kick and the hover boards which would definitely not fit in the long run). But when I found out he changed the style to something else, it did kinda upset me. But even with this change I didn’t send any hate comments or anything like that at all, because I thought and still think to this day the changes he made were a good thing. the game somehow feels more fluent, the characters models look cool especially with the shaders, and the characters fit the environment better. Just like with hero I have had some problems to finding the identity of my game, the style didn’t seem right to me and the backgrounds looked descent. But what hero has done with his game is a step in the right direction in my opinion.

The punch could have a use. If Knuckles punches an enemy then knuckles will halt his momentum. If he’s in a situation where he has to kill lots of enemies in a room then instead of rolling and shooting off, he can punch an enemy, stop, and then charge the next one. Also another mechanic exclusive to knuckles with the punch could be that if he punches something at high speeds, then instead off going through it, his momentum could be transferred into the enemy, giving him the ability to launch enemies into the distance. Imagine all the levels with knuckles where he might have to build up speed and shove a boulder, bust open a door or do mini games.

Idk, knuckles will likely already have some form of a homing attack that can halt his momentum like sonic and I don’t see being able to launch enimies to a distance being of any use besides looking cool. As for the bursting through secret areas with his strength, you bring up a good point, but I feel like hero will just do what he did with the removed wall jump move in where he incorporates its usefulness into an already existing or new move. Hero knows and cares about useful moves which is why he took out boost and the other features. He has found ways to keep the usefulness of every single one and is probably already considering the usefulness and potential of the punch move, it just depends on how they handle it. @@psionx1 while it is true that boss fights usually take more than rolling to beat, the punch move in a boss fight would probably be be as useless as the roll move especially considering it only worked in ph2 as a less effective way to defeat enemies. while having different characters use their unique abilities to beat bosses in different ways would be good, there are already plenty of different moves that the characters can use to spice up boss fights in their own way. also, idk about the idea that knuckles must have treasure hunting stages. the reason treasure hunting stages were fun was because you could use your unique skillset to explore areas to find hidden goodies, but I think multiple characters are best when they are unique takes on base moves like how they are in PH right now. what I'm trying to say is, I don't see why hero should put in all the work to design a whole stage around knuckles when they can just design the levels to work for both knuckles and the other characters. s3&k and mania were good examples of this. knuckles could access secret pathways that lead to areas designed for him and sometimes he would start in a part of a level designed for him like in ghz in mania. as I said before, hero will probably give knuckles the ability to do this in some way, or he will bring the move back who knows? we just have to wait.

The previous design even had the feel of an actual sonic game. Looking this new design looks another generic sonic fan game. I’m personally not against a classic sonic styled 3D sonic game but the models aren’t there compared to the previous modern designs. I was also a sucker for that sonic 3&k spin dash that modern sonic had. The movement for the previous was really good aswell, I feel their could have had some work to be done to them but throwing them away wasn’t the right call in my opinion. I think it’s an improvement. It seems that Hero is going for a type of gameplay that when you gain your speed, you have to maintain that speed and he changed the mechanics a bit to better suit that vision. I really like it and honestly the classic sonic complaints are just nit picks and not really critiques. Just because it’s not a Sonic design you like, doesn’t mean it “got worse”. I used to think that this fan base was just toxic babies but it’s just split. Honestly the thing that made me love Project Hero from the start is the momentum-based speed physics, no matter WHAT the game looks like, as long as that isn't removed I have a feeling I'll enjoy the finished product whatever it turns out to be :) even if it's Classic Sonic it's going to feel great to play and that's what really matters, at least, to me anyway. About the removed moves? having played the demo I agree they didn't have a use, removing things that don't have a reason to be there probably makes it easier on Hero as a developer.

I don't think this is a bad step forward per se, but I feel as if the removal of some of the movesets that made the hero project so unique is what bothers me. Knuckles losing his punches tails losing the speed boost, and sonic losing the light dash and spin kick is a huge bummer. Of course, you said that these moves could come back but to me, it gave these characters a bit more flair to their characters. As with the character designs, I like that he wants to do the OVA sonic look, but they still look more like the classic style that we are all accustomed too. He needs to make them more stylish and unique looking. Maybe he could take some ascepts of the modern look and apply it to the models now. Make them more lanky and have a more rich color on their pallets, really try to make the style shine. I say this because the OVA basically feelings like an amalgamation between modern and classic looks in a way to me, but that's just how I see it. Overall, I hope the look changes a bit more because I don't want it to be jumbled in with all the other classic games. This engine has amazing potential and I want it to be as good as it can be, and so far it hasn't disappointed me. So please Hero if you see this take this small critique into thought, you don't have to follow what I say of course but I really have high hopes, this doesn't come from hate, this comes from pure excitement and high hopes for your fan-game.

This game looks incredible. I agree with every change made too (I'm indifferent about the art style; Classic and Modern Sonic are both just Sonic to me). The game has a clear sense of direction, and it looks very fluid and brisk. I especially love the idea to quickly roll back down a half pipe by holding down roll while wall running. Most of the fan games I've seen send Sonic moon jumping high up into the air when he spin dashes up a half pipe (which is great for exploring), but they didn't have any options for getting back down quickly if you want to keep charging forward. In this game you can do both. So yeah, it looks amazing, and I can't wait to see it when it's finished.

I thought this will be great engine for modern sonic fangames, so I'm sure a little disappointed. Yeah, there wasn't much of Classic Sonic in SEGA games as you said, but most of fangames are in the classic style, 3D or not. I really love Sonic Grand Tour fangame, so I had some hopes for Sonic Project Hero to be the second best modern Sonic fangame, but it now can be the best classic Sonic fangame instead and I can still love playing it. I love the new style that it's mostly from the OVA and other classic games. along with classic, modern, and new moves. From how it looks and plays it looks satisfying to do all these moves. But Out of all of this. I still prefer the Project Hero (2020) Modern it had a lot of opportunity to at least keep both versions and keep them as their own game. ill say when this new demo comes out, I'm sure gonna have a smile on my face when I play this. but also a bit sad that Modern Version is gonna be gone.

In the Project Hero (Ph2) demo, Knuckles was able to spin dash while on a wall. That's the one thing I hope that's in the ph3 iteration for Knuckles as I find that to be very helpful in scaling a wall much faster

I just noticed the lack of cartooney flair, please let it there be more squash and stretch animations, the tails's flying smear animations it's just perfect, but sonic and knuckles could use a bit of those. Bad grammer aside, this is a really good video! I especially like the way you explained the hate that Hero got with his classic overhaul. That it wasn't really Hero's fault, but rather everyone's general tiredness of the classic aesthetic, and the fact that after Sonic Mania and Sonic Utopia, classic fans got these two incredible looking games both in 3D and 2D, while Modern Sonic's aesthetic and games are seen less favorably as time goes by because of general disappointment and lackluster games. This is without mentioning how many pressure was put on Project Hero to be the next best thing, countless youtubers kept calling it the next stage in Sonic's gameplay evolution, and saying that the way PH was doing things is how Sega should do the next Sonic game. With that much pressure and high hopes, it's only logical that people would be disappointed when PH took that drastic turn and was made with a more classic look in mind. It's not about gameplay, because it'll surely be on the same level as before. It's really just about how Modern fans needed something for themselves that looks and feels amazing, but now what they had is no longer there. Therefore, I completely understand people's anger, although hating on Hero isn't cool by any means. There's also how because of this shift towards Classic Sonic and nostalgia pandering within the entire Sonic "sphere", people who aren't that far in the Sonic "fandom" keep talking about how Classic Sonic was Sonic's greatest time, and more and more people are talking about Sonic's "Dark Ages". Plus there are more long, well-made and popular nostalgic videos about the classic games, and as a modern fan, it feels like the games of "my" era aren't being talked about as much as they should, because right now it isn't popular or "cool" to be a Sonic fan from the mid-2000's. It's as if after Sonic Adventure 2, the only games that exist and are worth talking about are 06, Unleashed and Forces. It feels like it's wrong to like a particular part of the franchise because it currently isn't "in" with the popular opinion, at least without constantly reminding everyone that the games in this era are also "bad" in some way. Like you have to state what's wrong with something before you say why you like it. It's feels as if you can't be overly positive about something you love, because some things are wrong with it and you "have" to mention them. Anyway, rant aside, modern fans haven't gotten enough love lately, and it's something that they desperately need, especially these days. Personally, I think PH's current iteration looks amazing, and I am completely okay with Hero shifting towards that aesthetic. But it still feels like some part of its identity was lost with that shift. Because now it uses popular Classic Sonic stylings, like OVA Sonic who's getting talked about more these days, and Utopia-esque cel shading. When its previous iteration felt like it had more of an identity as a refined, minimalistic modern aesthetic. Honestly I just want to play it already.

Actually, that's a good point. I never understood that culture of having to point out the bad where it makes no sense to. It's almost like these people who make YT videos about Sonic games want brownie points or something. Right up there with the JonTrons and Egoraptors and IGN(orant ignants) of the world. I don’t think it’s just because people are tired of classic sonic that they’re disappointed. It’s also the fact that we haven’t gotten a good modern game with multiple playable characters in so long, and that was a big reason people were looking forward to the fan game, including me. It had so much potential for putting in a complex story with the modern iterations of the characters, along with some amazing gameplay with inspired move sets for all the characters without so much automation. It would also kind of feel like a wake up call to SEGA showing this is what’s possible and it’s what the fans want. Now it’s just another classic fan game (still great) with the 3 classic characters and just it doesn’t have the same impact for some. I think you took a very simplistic view of of people’s objections to the change in this video.

I like this style. If you read these comments, I think it'd be cool to see the use of 'smear' effects like Arc System Works does with the Guilty Gear series. I have no idea where these would be implemented, I'm not a game animator, but I remember seeing them used in a Rachet and Clank game for the PS4, and think that seeing them used in a Cell Shaded Sonic game would look cool as hell.

The end of this video, the part addressing the "fan criticism" is completely unnecessary. Hero and his team are their own developers and artists. They can make whatever kind of Sonic game they want. While, I too prefer the "phase 2" iteration from an artistic/aesthetic standpoint, if they want to harken back to the direction the OVA took for inspiration that's fine. I'm still interested because this man and his team have created the best and, IMO close to perfect, iteration of 3D Sonic gameplay I've played (momentum based, highspeed and all). I'm also confused at this notion that the inclusion of "Green Hill" is classic Sonic pandering. Thats the character's unique aesthetic roots. Every time Mario includes blocks, blue skies and castles I hear NO ONE saying that Mario is "nostalgia pandering" and hell, those are in every one of his games. My point is, at this time SEGA is (finally) capitalizing and building on their brand using its SIGNATURE THEMES and that's a good thing! It's part of the consistency I as a Sonic fan (and I'm sure many of you) have longed for. Sure, be daring and artistically free but, never lose those signature things that make Sonic special and Sonic Sonic. There is a big difference between elements of a stage and stages. Mario doesn't use the first stage of the first mario game on every single mario game. Sonic uses green hill zone on everything after generations besides boom and lost world. (And even then windy hill is literally green hill but tubes) its tiring. Happily green hill isnt an actual stage of the game.

I say this a great change! Yes, I loved the way PH2 handled the gameplay, but this current iteration feels unique to me. And using the OVA style for character designs is a really interesting and very nice touch to a game that can most definitely make this game feel like its something right out of that universe. The Cel-shading is a nice touch as well. Personally, I hope this really goes well for Hero. Yeah, the vocal minority can hate on me all they want, but I say let's see where this project goes.

Ok but having the game be stylized like the OVA with expressive movement and wacky visuals sounds amazing. I personally love the change and look forward to what Hero has going forward!!

The game still looks great, but damn, do I not like this being yet ANOTHER fan game with a Classic aesthetic (there's too many classic fangames and not enough modern ones IMO, plus Sega and Sonics' games have oversaturated recently with the Classic Era). This still looks fun to play, but the change is gonna bother me lol

@@Ketchup1810 Yes they are the same character, but they look, act, and play differently so for some people it's hard NOT to differentiate the 2... I personally don't have a preference for a specific Sonic, but I would have liked it to be Modern Sonic in this instance given how many Classic Fan games there are If you think there should only be one sonic that's fine, but don't force it onto other people...

Not gonna lie, seeing blue shoes Tails and yellow shoes Knux makes me really happy. Edit: On another note, I'm honestly glad to see the direction Project Hero is heading. So many Adventure-styled fan games just look and play so similar to eachother to the point to where they get kinda samey, and in my opinion, Project Hero kinda fell into that same category for me. With the way it's looking now, it just seems so much more fresh and distinct, and actually makes me interested in giving it a go, rather than just going, "Oh that's neat," and moving on.
