Sonic the Hedgehog - Green Hill Zone 16 + 8 Bit Mix

This is a mashup of both the 16 Bit and 8 Bit version of the Green Hill Zone music.
The original PSG backup sound of the Mega Drive / Genesis Version was exchanged with the music of the Master System version, wich is a pure PSG soundtrack, creating a new version wich emulates the full use of all 10 sound channels found in the Mega Drive / Genesis resulting in an "advanced version" of the original 16 Bit music.

I think it's not possible to use all 4 channels of the SN76489 at once on the Mega Drive because iirc you have to decide between using the third channel for PSG or to controll the noise.

BlueMue You can't do it with the SMPS driver. It's only written to use three PSG channels at once. You can only choose between a third square wave or a noise channel.

The Genesis blends two types of sound, FM and PSG. The Master System only used PSG. The Genesis reused this and added FM on top of that. Often both are used in Genesis music, but the usage of PSG is pretty minimal. What this guy did was he used the 8-bit version of the song that used the PSG to its full potential and replaced the minimalist PSG in the Genesis version.

But not everything is present in Yuzo's PSG conversion compared to what the Mega Drive uses from the PSG channels. Yuzo's has a bit more of the music in PSG form than what's used in the Mega Drive's.

Isidro Diaz Cotto You don't sum bits, you can have 8 bit and 16 bit at the same time but that doesn't mean they're added together. Because put it this way: 16 is the most the Genesis can handle. That means it can already handle 8. This is basically 16 using 16 and 8. But that's just an easy way of expressing it.

This is what I imagine an arcade version of the game would sound like. It would probably have 2 PSG chips, and 2 YM2612 chips. That leaves plenty of room for the sounds, and music to play all at once with this higher quality OST playing.
