What Sonic rip offs should I look at in the future? Any actual Sonic games I should look at? Let me know!

Stuff We Play there was Spinball on DOS. I found that pretty fun.

Socket/Time Dominator is an obscure one, but a blatant rip-off of Sonic according to Wez and Guru Larry from years ago. There's also Wiz n' Liz and Superfrog for computer systems. And for another clone that's actually good, I suggest Spark: The Electric Jester. That game needs more attention if it's ever to get a console release!

It's hilariously ironic how Awesome Possum excessively preaches about protecting the environment and stopping pollution, when in reality the amount of non-renewable materials and artificial energy required to conceptualize, create, promote and mass-produce the game itself solely serves to cause even more harm to nature than actually preserving it, and the game's shit-tastic "quality" is only the cherry on top of the nuclear faeces sundae that is Awesome Possum for the SEGA Genesis.

It's like, at the very least if they were going to make the game preachy, make the gameplay fun! But nope, it's one of the worst things I've ever played
@thisisasupersayin376 Жыл бұрын
It's even more hilarious when you remember Sonic already had semi-prominent anti-pollution themes

Excellent video, and it's always good to find a fan of Freedom Planet. Well, I believe there's a difference between the old and the modern Sonic clones, the producers in the old ones were meant to really compete with Sega and get customers out of it, while moderns like Freedom Planet and Spark the Eletric Jester are looking for a kind of feeling, energy, I do not know, that they had no more in the current Sonic games, before Sonic Mania there was not a good Sonic 2D game for years.
@StuffWePlay6 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree here! And Sonic clone isn't so much a bad term, as it's just a way to describe a type of momentum-based platformer. Bubsy had to make the list though for directly trying to rip off Sonic's marketing strategy in the 90s, though!

I love Freedom Planet. I hate that they are going away from the 16-bit Sonic-inspired artstyle in the second game. One game you didn't mention but is a good game in the Sonic-like genre is Spark the Electric Jester. store.steampowered.com/app/601810/Spark_the_Electric_Jester/ It's very good. You should check it out.

I also second the motion of Jazz Jackrabbit and Freedom Planet being awesome. I haven't played some of the others on the list, but in some cases, that's probably a good thing. XD Oh, also: Jazz Jackrabbit and its sequel are available on GOG, so hunting the game down isn't actually that hard anymore. They're both 25% off on there as of me writing this.

Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the GOG tip off! Debating doing a JJ retrospective, once I finally track down some physical copies :)

I learned today there was a third Jazz Jackrabbit game that was never released. Maybe this is another series worth giving a complete retrospective!
@HappyFrogGamesLLC6 жыл бұрын
As a Jazz Jackrabbit fan... hoo boy, it goes far deeper than just the unreleased third game. An Unreal Engine 3 tech demo thing designed for mobile devices that was a bit controversial for its inclusion of large amounts of gore for reasons that people *still* aren't quite sure of? That's a thing. It exists. Several other mentions and tidbits of a possible third game *after* the cancellation of Jazz Jackrabbit 3? Yup, also happened. The infamous GBA entry of the series? People wish that one *didn't* happen! There's even some notable community happenings... let's just say you should look into the fan-made level packs collectively known as DevRes, and then look into the guy who made it. You'll likely be surprised when you discover what game it is he went on to work on the level design for afterwards... The list of crazy things that could be included in such a retrospective goes on, and there may even be some things that I'm not aware of myself that'd be worth including. Tl;dr A retrospective on the series would almost *certainly* be worth making.

Why should I track down a copy of Jazz Jackrabbit, when there is a GOG version that's only a fraction of the price of the physical release nowadays, which is very rare and costs over a hundred dollars!
