I saw someone on Twitter theorise that the reason why Radical Highway keeps popping up is because in SA2, Shadow was at the peak of his hatred for humans in that level and bringing the level back is Black Doom's attempt at putting Shadow back into that mindset to make him easier to manipulate, which I think is a pretty neat idea.

Shadow had a lots of smiles in the Archie Comics. The one that sticks in my mind was when Hope Kintobor hugged him in the first Sonic Universe arc. Fucking Penders forcing Hope to have an absolute tragic last appearance is one of the many things I will never forgive him for.

5:30 - 5:36 To give a bit more context in this moment: this Shadow is from main Archie Sonic-series, where during Moebius-storyline he accidentally ended up on Moebius while trying to reach Special Zone. Shenanigans happened, and Shadow ended up teleporting to Archie Sonic X's final issue by using Metal Sonic's engine that could travel between zones(yeah, that was a thing). At the end of that issue, Shadow and Metal teleported to first issue of _Sonic Universe_ and Archie Sonic X's Eggman(who tried to use Metal to fight Sonic, but Shadow happened) rushes back to his base to check if _their_ Shadow has woken from his stasis(he wasn't). To summarise: This Shadow has no idea who this crying kid is, which is why he's panicking.

Shadow smiled plenty in the Archie Comics. Archie Shadow was almost nothing like how he acted in the games until the reboot. He was a lot more emotional and even went to Sonic to beg him for help. I'd think that Gerald simply was willing to tamper with Shadow's memories because in his insanity he didn't value Shadow nearly as much has he did Maria. He made Shadow for her sake anyway.

I will answer that Shadow did genuinely smile in the Archie Comics, I feel like it happened multiple times, but one specific moment was in the Sonic Universe issues when he had interacted with Hope Kintobor

To me, Shadow is a character who doesn't need a gun but will sometimes use one. When he uses a gun, it should feel cool because it's something he doesn't normally do. He should only use them when he feels like he has to. If he has a gun, I think that should signify that he's either taking something more seriously than usual, or he's really pissed off. If they can translate that to a game mechanic, then I'd be ok with them bringing them back.

I agree with the criticism on the overuse of Radical Highway. For me, what would have been cool was for the Dr. Strange segments in levels should have been a sampler of parts of levels from Shadow the Hedgehog. Not just Westopolis, but the G.U.N base, the flying temple, etc.

Apparently the Japanese version has media that entails Gerald was made to continue working on Shadow while he was imprisoned and Shadow was contained by them, and his tampering with him is what eventually prompted his execution. As for the ARK crash, there is one assumption that, if dissuaded, explains the set-up: Gerald was not the one to program it, he just figured it out. Consider the following: Gerald's execution tape from Prison Island ends up on the ARK and is initiated when it begins to fall; someone would have to know Gerald's vendetta to bring and uploaded it, the only candidate for which is Shadow; in the background of Gerald's tape we see writings on the wall, something Amy draws attention to when Sonic is kept in the same Cell. Shadow is able to reach the ARK before anyone else thanks to Chaos Control since he steals an Emerald before Radical Highway (and this assuming he didn't keep the one Eggman used to release him). In short: Gerald Robotnik determined how to cause the Crash with his calculations on the Wall, and Shadow, while alone on the ARK pending Eggman's arrival 2 levels later, uploads Gerald's final message and primes the Colony to crash when all 7 Emeralds are brought, knowing how through either his manipulated memory or from information Gerald wrote.

I was holding off saying this in case you guys mention, but there is a reason chaos island is a level in shadow generation despite not being in frontiers. One of Gerald's dialogs mentions how Shadow doesn't remember some of the levels possible because they are locations he has yet to go to but will at some point in the future. Shadow will go to Chaos Island at some point, we just haven't seen those events yet

Apparently, the Sonic X anime confirmed Maria was twelve when she died. If you look at her character models, especially from Shadow '05, she seems to have a growing chest as if she started puberty.

This is basically the "Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story" of Sonic Gens. We get to check up on what the edgehog is doing and we see the return of an old foe from a few games prior. Not to mention the return of Mephiles trying to force himself back into the timeline, which explains Crisis City and Silver (Crisis City is Silver's first level in Sonic's campaign). So around this time, Black Doom AND Fawful are exacting their revenge in gaming history. Villains you thought were LONG GONE.

Funny thing is, the Shadow getting hugged by Chris is not Sonic X's Shadow. It's the mainline Archie Shadow. So he has absolutely no context for who this kid is. When Archie wrapped up the Sonic X comic and replaced it with Sonic Universe, they had one transition directly into the other by way of a dimension-hopping Shadow and Metal Sonic. Shadow was trying to Chaos Control into the Special Zone to get hold of a Chaos Emerald for GUN, but getting into the Special Zone isn't exactly easy and he bounced off and landed on Anti-Mobius/Moebius, in the middle of a brawl between Sonic, Amy, Silver, Scourge, Metal Sonic, Rob, and Rosy/Anti-Amy (I forget the exact order that everyone turned up but Issue 195 was basically an excuse to have as many hedgehog characters as possible in one fight). When Sonic convinced everyone to take Scourge out first (which was fairly easy, since, y'know, he's Scourge, everyone with a brain hates his guts), Scourge turned the tables by going into his Super form. This resulted in Metal deciding that the alliance was no longer strategically sound and turning on Sonic, so Shadow grabbed him and used that Metal's experimental warp drive to teleport them both out of Moebius entirely. They then landed in the Sonic X comic's final issue, and there's some confusion over whether he's their Shadow or not (since the X comics were all set on Earth and didn't include the Season 2 finale arc of returning everyone to not-Mobius, so Shadow's return in the show was never covered), before Shadow again teleported himself out of the Sonic X universe and into the Sol Dimension, beginning with Sonic Universe #1. Which is where the legendarily memetic panel of Shadow looking monumentally pissed off at Marine comes from. So good string of comics for absolutely hilarious Shadow panels.

So I wanted to point out some interesting things regarding iteration on ideas. Shadow’s gameplay borrows from multiple sources, including the Boost Formula, a bit of Shadow the Hedgehog where the Hero Gauge will stop time temporarily during boss fights, but just as a regular mechanic, and 06 with Chaos Spear, mechanically they do what they did in 06 but they can be used on the ground and in the air. And they work better overall. In many ways Shadow Generations takes stuff from previous games that could work well and incorporates them in a more fleshed out and well realized way.

I had a thought/theory, I wonder if the reason why there’s no Shadow 05 level is because we don’t truly have a canon path and Sega/Sonic Team (for whatever reason) didn’t wanna confirm which paths or stages are canon, by picking a specific stage, that basically says its canon and now the canon has to shape around that fact. Even including Westopolis would basically be saying the Neutral Route for that level would be canon. Also, I didn’t know how much I needed a Finale Version of Radical Highways theme with ambient choir until this game, its so good.

If we get more Frontiers style combat, which we 100% should and I hope they keep expanding & refining on that combat for Sonic, I want Shadow to get his Guns back and for him to take a lot of cues from Dante's Gunslinger style & maybe even a few moves from Lady when she was playable in DMC4. Shadow with guns works, its cool, its fun. The series isn't ashamed of itself anymore and we're allowed to go back to and expand on ideas like the Black Arms again, Shadow is even allowed to have his motorcycle & use, albeit a laser/plasma, gun in the 3rd movie. If Sonic goes all in on his melee combat/Dragon Ball ki attacks, let Shadow's combat be defined by Chaos Powers & Guns.

Regardless of the “Edge”, Doom Wing feels like a Super form that’s better than Super Sonic; Invincibility, requires 50 rings to transform, rechargeable boost on the ground (basically an endless boost), and able to glide in the air (at the cost of boost, not rings). I bring this up because the recent version of Sonic Generations didn’t update Super Sonic! No increased speed, no increased jump height, no Super Sonic theme, just left with the same 2-ring-per-second draining “power-up”, with Modern’s 8-ring-per-second boost! How is a non-super form better than the actual super form?!

Following on from Johnny's speculation that Gerald may contact his family concerning Shadow following the events of this game, the journal seems to imply that Gerald has effectively been shunned by his family after he took Maria aboard the ARK. Maria's parents were against the idea if you recall. I also feel compelled to mention that this is the only Sonic game I know of that contains the words "cum" and "pervert". Just throwing that out there.

i can definitely see a shadow the hedgehog remake working, like, just make encore mode the default and all the branching paths become side stories you can do whenever you feel like that, either as a separate mode, or something you can do while playing through the main campaign and doing specific objectives. as for gameplay, i really don't care much for the guns, what i personally want is for shadow to basically become vergil, chaos spears instead of mirage blades/mirage edge, chaos control instead of darkslayer and quicksilver, chaos blast punches and air-shoe kicks instead of beowulf, chaos form instead of devil trigger, the works, like, give me that, and i don't care if he has guns. alternatively, they can tie the guns to the story, in the beginning of the game you don't have a lot of chaos powers, but the more emeralds you collect, the more black doom reveals shadow's past to him, these flashbacks would mainly show shadow's days on the ark demonstrating his chaos powers to the scientists and staff, and by the end of the game, you have all the powers you need, including chaos spears and what not.

I do think Radical Highway should be in the game, it'd be insane to leave it out frankly considering it's Shadow's 1st ever level and tied so much to him. But I don't think Westopolis should have been the Final Level that you face Black Doom in either. It should have been the level that Doom takes you to in the Doom's Eyes sections, but the Black Comet should have been the Final Zone. I'd say keep Radical Highway as a regular Zone you go to, maybe even replace Chaos Island with it though I do presume that Chaos Island is going to be narratively important to Shadow in a future title considering we seem to have a lot of stuff being set up alongside getting closure on a few things.

All the claims of Radical Highway being the "new Green Hill" fall completely flat when you think about it. I remember seeing someone claim Westopolis already was because you had to play it 326 times, but I reminded him of three things-3. Westopolis is only played a max of 10 times, far more reasonable, though still rather tedious, to get every ending and unlock the Last Story, and the other 316 playthroughs wpud only ne if you were obsessed with getting every single title for every cutscene in the Library, and 2. Westopolis was only ever used in Shadow the Hedgehog and has not been seen since, not even in Shadow Generations despite some hoping for it, and 3. The Green Hill complaints came from the zone being reused as Sonic's starting zone nearly every time a new game came out post-Generations, with people just wanting a new opening zone at that point. Calling Radical Highway the new Green Hill doesn't work when it's not only not an opening zone (though it is Shadow's first playable stage in the franchise), but the last time it was even used was in the original Sonic Generations before Shadow's new campaign, and the Doom Zones don't count since they're just segments that appear in stages rather than actual fully fleshed levels.

I know everyone laments the absense of a proper Shadow level but consider Most of those levels are ass and Westopolis has been done to death in its home game, so I'm fine with no actual Shadow level. Besides San Francisco is cool.

Not gonna lie, after playing Shadow Generations and experiencing Doom Wing Super in standard levels is so freaking boring now. Seriously, outside of invincibility the only changes are that your faster and have infinite boost. You're practically playing exactly the same as you were before transforming. And the one time they actually did something unique with it ended up making it more of a detriment. Doom Wing, on the other hand, allows you to just zip over so many things. It makes the clock challenges in White Space so much easier since you can just fly over so much stuff. And unlike Modern Super Sonic in Generations, there is no major drawback that makes it nigh unusable.

Things Ryan Did Wrong # Radical Highway...No, seriously, what was that run on Radical Highway? I'll be the first to admit that S-Ranking Radical Highway is incredibly difficult even with the Doom Wing, but I got A and B Ranks on my first run of these infernal levels. Ryan, while we love you for your sharp wit and ANARCHY ways, you really needed to do a few practice runs before this commentary. I apologize if I've been needlessly harsh on you with these throwbacks to your Running Gag from the SGB run of Super Mario 64, but I only post these because we all expect better Sonic gameplay from you.

The only stage I had to redo for a better rank was Radical Highway Act 2 (I got a B), but I otherwise consistently got S Ranks and A Ranks. Also, how are we idiots for pointing out Ryan's lack of Chaos Control throughout the playthrough?

Blind runs do typically excuse poor gameplay...but when it's fundamentally the same gameplay as the other half of this commentary. Ryan wasn't exactly doing too hot in base Generations either. A lot of his deaths in the playthrough were extremely avoidable, especially when he's just repeatedly falling into the same pit.

Look, I didn't have a problem with Chris Thorndyke back in the day when I watched Sonic X. What I didn't like was the amount of hate he received. Did these people have nothing better to do but hate on a fictional character. It's ok to either like or dislike a character, but this was just going too far.
