This is definitely what one of the lower rings of hell sounds like. It's incredible, this album has made me viscerally sick! Combine the impenetrably dark guitars, flailing bass, primal singing, and lyrics about humanity at its worst (and inhumanity) and you get an album that rips the darkness of our souls to the top of our vision. Incredible. One of the most underrated albums ever.

Ever since I heard Spiderland for the first time, I have been trying to find stuff that has a similar aesthetic to it. Everyone would always recommend Leaves Turn Inside You by Unwound, which I always thought didn't fit. Sure, October all Over sounds like Washer, but the record as a whole is too bright and "indie rock" to capture that same feeling of anxiety. I also got Soundtracks for the Blind by Swans, which is closer. But it's more of a heavy psychedelic record, it remains me of Deathconsciousness more than anything. Then, after exploring through SY discography and becoming obsessed with EVOL, I finally stumbled on this record. It blew me the fuck away, this record is entirely what I was looking for and more. It's like the anxiety of Slint turned up to 11 and thrown onto a belt sander. Best SY record by far.
@ILoveDavidLynch2 жыл бұрын
Same here, I listened to Spiderland yesterday and it left me wanting to listen to this also. I listen to a lot of Punk/Hardcore and stuff under the umbrella of that, but I'm also just trying to find stuff that shoots in a similar direction to this. There's clearly an awareness of crazy abrasive Punk and Hardcore, like early 80s DC bands but it's as if that has been channeled into a slow, dark, jarring, repetitive well of sound. It's so unique and masterful.

This album was a shock to my system the first time I heard it. It's better every time I listen to it. There will never be another band like Sonic Youth. They broke the mold completely within guitar music/rock/punk/experimentalism and evolved into a beast of a band, who constantly evolved and put out albums every 2 years for 30 years. The music got less chaotic and more refined as the years went by almost like they were a nuclear explosion in reverse, yet never lost the chaos and dissonant aspects. Even when they were doing melodic masterpieces like "I love you Golden Blue" and "Hoarfrost" they still brought the noise in their interludes and jam outs between verses and what not. Oh and the song structures? Rarely following Verse, Chorus, Verse. . Wish they hadn't broke up. Fuck Thurston for cheating on Kim.

It's funny how time changes your perception. I remember listening to this when it first came out and it sounded so chaotic and disorganized. I imagined a few people with stolen instruments just banging and flailing away with no talent, but now it's still chaotic, but intentional, orchestrated and perfect banging and flailing way. I used to blast this on my crappy car stereo to annoy my friends at full volume, crackling speakers, too much treble and all.
