Bob Zmuda Growing up reading the NME in the late 90s all I read on Sonic Youth were sneering comments about them being unlistenable, pretentious and, yes, overrated. Then a friend lent me Daydream Nation. It remains the most ferocious, intense exhilarating album I've ever heard.
@superyid20109 жыл бұрын
The Sprawl I never could understand NME's blatant disregard for SY.They call them pretentious but you can't get much more pretentious than NME itself. Your right this album is a masterpiece and if your looking for something equally ferocious,although you've probably heard it,try Pixies Surfer Rosa.

@@mtr801 Since you're stalking me on my other comments, you should know by now it has nothing to do with opinion. It's pattern recognition. By listening to all SY albums anyone with a brain should come to the conclusion that DDN is the least typical of all. By not being able to avoid music mainstream BS, anyone should be able to hear that DDN is closest to it of all SY albums. If you're unable to discern similar from dissimilar, you have bigger problems than bad taste in music.

I actively avoided Sonic Youth until seven minutes ago, and am now SHOCKED at how much I love "Teen Age Riot"; for the moment, it may well qualify as one of my top 10 favorite rock songs of all time.

Patrick Hawley why did you actively avoid sonic youth btw?
@patrickbryanthawley8 жыл бұрын
I prefer my dissonance a little less determinedly rhythmic than what I had heard. Just a personal preference. And because I had avoided them, I was unaware of the melody they seem able to drag out of the wall of sound they create.

Their sixth album, released in 1988, Daydream Nation was my first Sonic Youth album, and still my favorite today. When this album came out it changed my life. I have seen them live seven times beginning 8/21/1990 (with an unknown at the time, Nirvana opening up). I recorded a high quality bootleg of their live Berkeley, CA performance of Daydream Nation beginning to end, on 7/19/2007.

"Providence" consists of a piano solo by Moore recorded at his mother's house using a Walkman, the sound of a Peavey Roadmaster amp overheating and a pair of telephone messages left by Mike Watt, calling for Moore from a Providence, Rhode Island payphone, dubbed over one another.
